What the United Kingdom Is Revealing About Political Islam—and Why the Church Must Awaken Without Turning Muslims Into the Enemy

There is a conversation the Western Church must learn to have—one that speaks the truth without surrendering to hatred, fear, or political hysteria. We must be able to examine the rise of political Islam without treating every Muslim as an enemy. We must distinguish between people who deserve our love and an ideology that must be examined in the light of truth.

Muslims are not beyond the reach of the Cross. They are men, women, and families for whom Jesus Christ gave His life. Many desire nothing more than to live peacefully, provide for their children, and worship according to their conscience. Any Christian response that dehumanizes them, mistreats them, or encourages hostility against them contradicts the character of the One we claim to represent.

Yet loving people does not require us to remain silent about ideology.

The concern addressed in my book, A Holy Remnant: Heaven’s Answer to Jihad, is not the ethnicity of Muslims, their presence in our communities, or their right to be treated with dignity. The warning concerns what happens when Islam moves beyond personal religious conviction and emerges as a political and governmental system that demands submission from the surrounding culture.

What Is Happening in the United Kingdom?

The changing religious landscape of the United Kingdom is undeniable. According to the 2021 census, the percentage of people in England and Wales identifying as Christian fell from 59.3 percent in 2011 to 46.2 percent in 2021. During that same period, the Muslim population increased from approximately 2.7 million to 3.9 million.

Those numbers alone do not prove the existence of an Islamic takeover. Population growth is not extremism, and peaceful Muslim neighbors should never be treated as though they are responsible for the actions of radicals. The more serious warning is found in the growing pressure being applied against freedom of speech, religious expression, open debate, and those accused of offending Islamic beliefs.

In 2024, the United Kingdom’s Commission for Countering Extremism reported that anti-blasphemy activism was becoming increasingly organized and radicalized. The report warned that some of those targeted had become fearful for their lives, that activists were seeking to make blasphemy a central political concern among British Muslims, and that foreign anti-blasphemy movements appeared to be developing a presence within the United Kingdom.

This should concern every person who values freedom of conscience—not only Christians.

Britain abolished its traditional blasphemy laws, yet a form of unofficial blasphemy enforcement can still arise when threats, intimidation, public pressure, or fear make people afraid to question or criticize religious claims. A law does not have to be written into a nation’s legal code if intimidation can achieve the same result in practice.

The British government also continues to identify Islamist terrorism as the country’s primary terrorist threat, even while acknowledging other dangers, including extreme-right violence and individuals fascinated with mass-casualty attacks. This is not an accusation against Britain’s entire Muslim population. It is an official recognition that Islamist ideology remains capable of radicalizing individuals toward violence.

The Distinction We Must Not Lose

There is a vital difference between a Muslim and an Islamist.

A Muslim is a person. An Islamist is someone committed to advancing an understanding of Islam as a governing political order. Jihadism is its violent revolutionary expression, using terror and bloodshed to impose that order or punish those considered its enemies.

Failing to make these distinctions produces two dangerous errors. One side denies the ideological threat because it fears being called intolerant. The other treats every Muslim as though he or she were a terrorist. Neither response is truthful, biblical, or helpful.

The Christian must occupy different ground. We love the Muslim while refusing to bow to political Islam. We proclaim Christ without hatred, defend freedom without fear, and expose destructive ideology without dehumanizing the people influenced by it.

“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world” (Ephesians 6:12).

Our warfare is not against Muslim flesh and blood. We are confronting spiritual deception, systems of domination, and ideologies that oppose the freedom and lordship found in Jesus Christ.

When Religion Demands Submission

Political Islam does not seek merely to participate in a pluralistic society. In its more developed forms, it seeks to reorder society around Islamic authority. Where such ideology gains governmental power, disagreement can cease to be treated as a protected freedom and instead become rebellion, apostasy, or blasphemy.

History has repeatedly demonstrated what can happen when this governing vision reaches its full expression. Religious minorities may be pushed to the margins. Converts can face severe consequences. Women may lose fundamental liberties. Critics can be silenced, and governments may punish those who refuse to submit to the dominant religious order.

This does not describe every Muslim, every mosque, or every interpretation of Islam. It describes the consequences of an ideology that joins religious authority with coercive governmental power and denies equal freedom to those who will not bow before it.

The United Kingdom has not become an Islamic state. It remains a constitutional democracy with strong institutions and millions of citizens—Muslim and non-Muslim—who value freedom. However, the pressures now appearing there should serve as a warning. A free nation begins surrendering its foundations whenever fear determines which religious beliefs may be questioned and which truths may be publicly spoken.

The Vacuum Created by a Retreating Church

The most uncomfortable truth may not concern the advance of Islam, but the retreat of Christianity.

Islam did not create the spiritual emptiness of the West. For decades, churches compromised the authority of Scripture, exchanged discipleship for entertainment, and gradually withdrew from the public square. The foundations were weakened long before another worldview began occupying the abandoned territory.

The Church cannot blame outsiders for entering a vacuum that we helped create.

This is why Heaven’s answer is not Christian nationalism, ethnic hostility, or a political crusade against Muslim communities. Heaven’s answer is a holy remnant—a people who cannot be bought, intimidated, manipulated, or silenced. It is a Church that has returned to the authority of Scripture, the lordship of Jesus Christ, the power of the Holy Spirit, and the proclamation of the Gospel.

The answer to a counterfeit kingdom is the visible demonstration of the true Kingdom.

“For the kingdom of God is not in word, but in power” (1 Corinthians 4:20).

Neither Hatred nor Silence

We must reject the false choice being placed before the Church. We do not have to choose between hatred and silence.

We can oppose anti-Muslim hostility while confronting Islamist extremism. We can defend the right of Muslims to worship peacefully while also defending the right of Christians, former Muslims, journalists, teachers, and ordinary citizens to question Islamic doctrines without being threatened. We can welcome Muslim neighbors into our communities while refusing every attempt to replace equal justice with religious intimidation.

Most importantly, we can preach Jesus without apology.

The Gospel does not spread through coercion. Jesus did not command His disciples to force the nations into submission through the sword. He commissioned us to make disciples, proclaim truth, love our enemies, heal the broken, and bear witness to His resurrection.

Political Islam seeks submission to a system. Jesus Christ calls people freely into reconciliation with the Father.

One is advanced through control. The other is revealed through sacrificial love, truth, and the transforming power of the Holy Spirit.

The Hour of the Holy Remnant

A Holy Remnant: Heaven’s Answer to Jihad was not written to manufacture fear or turn Christians against Muslims. It was written to awaken the Church to a spiritual and ideological battle that cannot be defeated through hatred, political slogans, or cultural panic.

The nations do not merely need stronger arguments. They need a living witness to the supremacy of Jesus Christ.

The coming battle will require believers who can discern without becoming suspicious of everyone, speak truth without becoming cruel, and love people without compromising the Gospel. We must be courageous enough to confront what is false and compassionate enough to reach those held within it.

The Muslim is not our enemy. The Muslim is part of our mission field. But the Church must never confuse love for people with surrender to an ideology.

This is the hour for a holy remnant to arise—unafraid, uncompromised, filled with the Holy Spirit, and carrying the Gospel into every place where fear, domination, and spiritual darkness have attempted to claim the throne.

Jesus Christ is still Lord, and the light still shines in the darkness.
