(I recently had the opportunity to not only listen to a man with such authority, but had the time to set down and talk with him. I came to see in Dan Mohler, such a person who is not merely speaking about the radical power of the Kingdom of God, but one who lives in it and releases it on a day to day basis).

There is a season of God coming upon the earth in which many will come into the glorious reality of a relationship with God that will allow a release of the miracle working power (dunamis) of God into the world on an unprecedented scale.

Never before has the world seen the awesome release of the mature sons of God walking in His supernatural power on such a large scale. Works of God that exceed the works of Jesus and the disciples in the first century will come forth on the earth as the conditions are met by the sons of God to receive the authority to flow the power of God. God greatly desires to release His power from heaven on earth through many sons. (Rom 8:19) (Heb 2:10)

God’s purpose for releasing His power in mankind is the redemption of the world. The salvation of man for heaven after death is a part of that redemption, but God’s purpose is larger and more comprehensive. God’s purpose in releasing power from heaven is to bring forth the kingdom of heaven on earth as it is in heaven.

The unlimited power of God is potentially available to change the world with and through mankind. The entire planet can be changed from the ways of men and the devil to the holy ways of God. The sin of man can be wiped from the face of the earth and the glory of God established in every area of life on the planet. The power of the Creator is available to work with and through man- kind to create the kingdom of heaven on earth. What will it take for this power to be flowing in your life?

Man must have specific authority from God to use the force or power of God in the world. Great power must always be accompanied by great authority. To be safe and effective, power must be restrained and focused. Power must be released in the right place at the right time at the correct rate. It must be directed toward the target and restrained from other non target areas.

Another Greek word sometimes translated “power” in the New
Testament is “exousia” and means primarily “authority”. It is defined as follows: G1849. exousia, ex-oo-see’-ah; from G1832 (in the sense of ability); privilege, i.e. (subj.) force, capacity, competency, freedom, or (obj.) mastery (concr. magistrate, superhuman, potentate, token of control), delegated influence:–authority, jurisdiction, lib- erty, power, right, strength.

Man must receive the authority (exousia) from God to use the miraculous power (dunamis) from God. There are conditions that must be met in the heart and life before these power gifts from God can be received by man. Many Christians seem to think that just because they are of the Christian faith they have power and authority over the devils and things of the world. Yet many continue to be plagued with demonic oppression and disorders in their lives and are unable to be a substantial factor in overcoming evil in the world. Many who seek to minister continue to find their efforts produce little or no real fruit and long for the power to make real change in peoples lives and subsequently the world.
All power and authority is given unto Jesus. (Mat 28:18) Only Jesus can give the miracle working power and authority of God to man.

Luke 9:1 Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases.

Later Jesus sent out seventy others and gave them power and authority over evil spirits and disease. Jesus often demonstrated power and authority over all the works of the enemy and over all nature. But only on a few occasions did He share that power with a few selected people. (Luke 10:1)

Before Jesus’ crucifixion He promised that many would be given the power and authority to do the works that He did and even greater works.

John 14:12: “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father.

At Jesus’ resurrection and ascension the miracle working power of God, which was on the earth in Jesus, left the earth with Him. It was necessary for the disciples to wait in Jerusalem for the return of the power (dunamis) of God in Jesus by the Holy Spirit to in-dwell believers. At Pentecost the awesome power of God re- turned to earth and in-dwelled those believers who were chosen to be filled with miracle working power and given authority to change the world by overcoming the works of the enemy and establishing the ways and works of God.

These began immediately to speak by the Spirit with authority and began to manifest astonishing demonstrations of the Spirit

. Their teaching and preaching became like Jesus with authority and demonstration of miracle working power. The people had been astonished when the power of God was evident in Jesus as he spoke with authority and power and cast out unclean spirits. Now they were seeing that same authority and power in these disciples.

Luke 4:31-36: Then He went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and was teaching them on the Sabbaths. And they were astonished at His teaching, for His word was with authority.

Now in the synagogue there was a man who had a spirit of an unclean demon. And he cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Let us alone! What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? Did You come to destroy us? I know who You are; the Holy One of God!”

But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be quiet, and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him in their midst, it came out of him and did not hurt him.

Then they were all amazed and spoke among themselves, saying, “What a word this is! For with authority and power He commands the unclean spirits, and they come out.”

Why did Jesus choose to give this power and authority to only a select few during His life on earth and why did He through the Holy Spirit come first only to those waiting in the upper room?

Why is it today that some are seeing these great miracles in their life and ministry and some are not? In these days of revival, more people are being chosen to receive authority to demonstrate the miracle working power of God. Yet there are others who call themselves believers who are not receiving it? What makes the difference in one who only wishes for the miracle working power of God to flow in and through their lives and those who actually see the miracle working power of God working through their lives?

Perhaps, the real question for you and me is: How can I obtain the authority (exousia) to have the power (dunamis) of God flow through me?

We don’t need more theological discussions or religious formulas about this. We must have what the twelve and the seventy received from Jesus. We must have what people like that of Dan Mohler and many others have in their lives today. What makes them different? How are they different from many others who wish they had the power of God and who seek it and may even try to act as though they have it, but do not have the reality of the power of God flowing through their lives?

How and why did these receive the impartation of the power of God? How can we receive the impartation of the power of God?

There may not be a simple one, two, three answer to these all important questions, but perhaps we can get some help from a brief look at some characteristics of those walking in (dunamis) power.

One thing that sticks out is that the twelve and the seventy had all been with Jesus. They had sold out and given up other things in life to just be with Jesus — to walk with Him and be a part of what He was doing. Jesus is the anointed one and the anointing of power flows through Him. He is the one in authority and is the one who can impart that authority. The word in the Bible translated anointing means to be rubbed on with oil. Those who were close to Jesus were the ones who received. Those who were not close and were busy about other things in life did not receive the transference of authority and power.

The men and women of today who are demonstrating the power of God on a consistent basis and have authority to carry and impart the power of God all have sold out other things in life to focus on the one thing of being with Jesus. Often they have spent time with other men and women in whom the authority and power of God are present. The gifts and anointing are often transferred by the laying of hands by those who are anointed with Christ and filled with His power.

Only those who have been given the authority from Christ to receive the gifts and power will receive from the laying on of hands — those with whom He has been intimate — who have proven them- selves trustworthy and have a pure heart and no other gods in their lives. God will not allow the authority to remain for an extended time on those whom He does not know and trust.

A touch from God is not the same as impartation. A touch can prepare one to give their life to God. But an impartation is for those who have figuratively sold all and can now be trusted with the awesome power of God. They will use what they are given only according to the desire of God. There are no other needs or priorities that drive them. Obedience to the Spirit of God is essential to walking in power. God will not release true spiritual authority to those who are not walking in obedience.

No amount of money or sacrifice can purchase the power of God for a believer with impurities yet existing in the heart. The wounded and yet unhealed heart containing any amount of resentment or bitterness in any form cannot obtain the authority of Christ to flow the power of God.

Acts 8:18-23: And when Simon saw that through the laying on of the apostles’ hands the Holy Spirit was given, he offered them money, saying, “Give me this power also, that anyone on whom I lay hands may receive the Holy Spirit.”

But Peter said to him, “Your money perish with you, because you thought that the gift of God could be purchased with money! “You have neither part nor portion in this matter, for your heart is not right in the sight of God.

“Repent therefore of this your wickedness, and pray God if perhaps the thought of your heart may be forgiven you. “For I see that you are poisoned by bitterness and bound by iniquity.”

The authority and power of God is only in God. God desires to in-dwell believers and to demonstrate His power and authority through us. Yet, He is a holy God and cannot dwell with iniquity. True inner holiness in our hearts is the only place for God to dwell and to rest His authority and power. Sometimes the road of purification to holiness can take one through much repentance and brokenness. Only our love for God and our sincere desire for Him can bring us through deep purification. Seeking Him with our whole heart will bring us into a relationship with Him that allows His life and power to flow through us.

We must make a radical decision to surrender all at the alter of the Lord, allowing Holy Ghost to come into our lives and perform a radical transformation. We must be radical in our decision to let go of the things of this world, all that ties us to it, all that has become an idol set up between us and our Holy God.

For indeed true disciples of Christ, the matured sons and daughters are they who have made the radical decision to follow none but God, to lay their lives down, and in a lowly position pick up their cross and follow Christ.

For our God is a radically Awesome God!!!!

And an highway shall be there, and a way, and it shall be called The way of holiness; the unclean shall not pass over it; but it shall be for those: the wayfaring men, though fools, shall not err therein.
Isaiah 35:8

When I first read this scripture, my mind immediately drew a parallel between the highway of holiness and driving down America’s highways. Here we go:

1. To get on the highway of holiness, you must first make the right turn. That is, whatever road you’re going down now, you must catch the on-ramp. The only way onto this highway is through the Blood of Jesus Christ. The destination is heaven, and Jesus said, “I am the Way.”

2. To make progress on this highway, you must keep your foot on the accelerator. That is, you must continually move forward. There is no turning back. You will encounter numerous distracting billboards and demonic off-ramps. My friend, stay on the main highway.

3. To ensure your continual progress, you must stay between the lines. This has to do with holiness, and the Bible clearly marks the proper direction.

4. Be sure, on the highway of holiness, to keep your vehicle (soul) tuned up. Make sure you check the oil. The Master Mechanic (Holy Spirit) will keep your engine running smooth if you’ll submit to His vehicle inspection.

5. You must stay on this highway until you reach your destination. Don’t settle for Satan’s substitutes. The devil’s rest stops can turn into death stops. Take heed to these simple rules, and you’ll be well on your way.

We are as explorers moving day by day further into a new land , a land we have never before seen, filled with things we have not yet known. Almost every day of our journey reveals awesome sights about which we may have heard but were unable to understand or even imagine until our eyes feast upon it, and all of our senses are quickened as we examine it with great excitement. Suddenly, what we have only read about and could not fully understand now makes perfect sense as we partake of and experience the reality of that which has previously been only a promise.

The future has come to us now. The glorious reality of God and His kingdom reality is presenting itself more as we reach each new horizon and partake of the previously unseen spiritual reality of God. Truly our eyes are lifted up unto the hills of God far above the darkness of the fallen world unto the heavenly order descending from above. Truly what God has prepared for those that love Him had never entered our natural minds until this blessed day in which the Holy Spirit is revealing it to a new generation of maturing sons of God.

We are more than being revived. We are being made alive in areas where we have never lived before. Our spiritual senses and spiritual lives have been so dulled by centuries of natural living and natural reasoning and understanding that, though we were alive, we were as dead being blind and deaf to supernatural spiritual reality.

The supernatural works of God were foreign and appeared impossible to us. We relegated all current supernatural to only demonic sorcery. The supernatural gifts of the Spirit that should have been part of our daily lives were not functioning. Our natural animal instinctive living led us to look unto our own ways devised by our prideful natural minds to provide for our natural appetites, while the world died spiritually and drifted into a realm of deep darkness far from the light and life of spiritual living in God.

We made church into a human endeavor of natural functions and developed religion in an attempt to reach God with our natural efforts. We took a devious shortcut to life and developed religious forms and ways to eliminate the costly real way of the cross of self denial and acceptance of spiritual reality. In bypassing our personal cross experience, we missed the resurrection life of Jesus that came to move us out of our natural ways and into the supernatural spiritual ways of resurrection life in God.

Praise God we have come to a new horizon, and the brightness of the light of God has appeared. Forerunner scouts have returned to the camp of explorers with glorious reports of real spiritual life of God just ahead, and we are moving out at first daylight to experience the real assembling of God with His people in spiritual gatherings with God.

The Ekklesia church is not a natural thing it is a spiritual reality. The Ekklesia is made up of spiritual beings called out of the natural world and into spiritual reality gathered unto God in the Spirit – a spiritual gathering of living stones an assembly of Spirit God, Jesus, many angels, and spirits of just men made mature in Jesus. All of our questions about headship, structure, and organization of church are dissolved as the Ekklesia comes together in the Spirit in the heavenly New Jerusalem on earth as it is in heaven.

Heb 12:22-24: But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, to an innumerable company of angels, to the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are registered in heaven, to God the Judge of all, to the spirits of just men made perfect, to Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaks better things than that of Abel.

For many centuries the church has been, for the most part, a gathering of natural beings with only occasional visitations of the Spirit touching the spirit within mankind. For the most part, natural effort went into performing religious rituals and praying mostly faithless prayers to a perceived distant God. It became a lukewarm church primarily concerned with social order and well-being. Skilled orators preached from a level of a higher caste than the ordinary laity who sat quietly at weekly meetings. Some received a sense of guilt and need for repentance of their sins, while others day-dreamed or fought to stay awake.

Probably no one even thought or dreamed of a gathering of spiritual beings on earth together with an innumerable company of angels, God the judge of all, Jesus the firstborn, and spirits of just men made perfect. We are so accustomed to living in the natural earthly side of our natural/spiritual being that the concept of the spiritual heavenly Jerusalem gathering on earth is hard for us to even think.

I believe God is speaking to His people today to step out of our natural side into our spiritual being side and look over the next horizon into the gathering of spiritual beings with Christ Jesus, Father God, holy angels, and spirits of others redeemed by the blood and living in the better things of the spiritual realm. The Holy Spirit brings all this to pass. Our spirits come together with the Holy Spirit and the entire God family and multitudes of angels.

Can we see it? Can we allow the reality of the spiritual Ekklesia to enter into our minds? Can we prepare now to come together in our next gathering as spiritual beings and not as natural people? No longer filled with conversation and considerations of natural things but filled with spiritual things waiting upon the Spirit, instead of natural planning. This is moving into the next horizon of the reality of walking in the Spirit, abiding in Him and He in us. This is God dwelling with His people. The light of His glory will fill the room, and our hearts will knit together with God and one another.

2 Cor 6:16: .. For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said: “I will dwell in them And walk among them. I will be their God, And they shall be My people.”

Rev 21:3: And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God.

Rev 21:23: The city had no need of the sun or of the moon to shine in it, for the glory of God illuminated it. The Lamb is its light.

Supernatural will become natural in spiritual gatherings. There will be no need for pumping and hype, no need for natural human intervention and control. The Spirit of God will rule as the headship of Christ Jesus becomes fully evident. It is the family of God from heaven and earth coming together, worshiping the One who sits upon the throne in perfect harmony multitudes of angels blending their voices with the spirits of justified men in heavenly melody rising to high crescendos and flowing as a mountain stream lightly through the valley and suddenly flowing with great strength and joy into a glorious waterfall to again come into deep pools of fresh sweet clear life in perfect peace – heaven and earth in perfect harmony praising God upon the throne.

Mat 18:20: “For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.”

John 4:23-24: “But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”

Keep on pursuing love.
It never fails.

There is a rising tide of interest in the phenomena of “signs and wonders” in the church today. With the resurgence of the occult and its powers in our society, there is indeed a crying need for the exhibition of the power of God through His people.

We must, however, be careful to discern the Biblical context for signs and wonders, and to see that these supernatural demonstrations of the power of God are only released when certain conditions are fulfilled.. They are not at our command. They are the sovereign prerogative of the Holy Spirit. Nor are they to be sought in and for themselves. Indeed, there is mortal danger in pursuing these things apart from the other and more important things of which signs and wonders are the marks of Divine confirmation. The danger is that in seeking signs and wonders in isolation, we may expose ourselves to the deception of the enemy. “The coming of the lawless one by the activity of Satan will be with all power and with pretended signs and wonders and with all wicked deception.” ( 2 Thess.2:9-10.) ” False Christs and false prophets will arise and show great signs and wonders so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect.” (Matthew 24:24.) See also Revelation 13:13-14.

We are also in peril of deceiving ourselves if we imagine that signs and wonders will, of themselves, always result in people being convicted and converted. The miracles of Jesus did not convince the Jewish leaders of the truth of His claims. Indeed so hardened were their hearts, that when they were witnesses of the healing of the man with the withered hand, they immediately held consultations about destroying Jesus. ( Mark 3: 1-6.)

The testimony of Jesus Himself confirms that He was not placing confidence in His miracles as such to convince men. In John 2: 23-24 it tells of many who, “believed in His name when they saw His signs which He did.” But, here is something of great significance, “Jesus did not trust Himself to them, because He knew all men and needed no one to bear witness of man, for He Himself knew what was in Man.”

In the story of Dives and Lazarus, the rich man in torment pleads with Abraham to send someone from the dead to his five brothers and says, “No, father Abraham; but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.”The reply is, “If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be convinced if some one should rise from the dead.” (Luke 16:30-31)

Again in John 6:26 we find Jesus remonstrating with the people who had followed Him after the feeding of the five thousand, “Truly, truly I say to you, you seek me not because you saw the signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves.” In other words, they had not perceived the true spiritual significance of the signs, but were only concerned with the physical satisfaction they had obtained through them.

There are many today who seek the same soulish excitement from signs and wonders, and who will rush from one place to another, and from one advertised miracle worker to another in order to satisfy wholly carnal desires.

By the end of John 6. those same seekers-after-miracles have drifted away, and Jesus, turning to His own chosen men asks them if they too will go away.

Peter’s answer is supremely illuminating. “Lord to whom shall we go ? You have the words of eternal life, and we have believed and have come to know that You are the Holy one of God.” It was not, you see, the signs and wonders which held these men, but rather the words of eternal life. Nor must we forget the reply of Jesus to some of the Scribes and Pharisees who said to Him, “Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you.” Jesus replied, “An evil and adulterous generation seek a sign.”

With these cautions in mind we can go on to the positive aspects of the subject and declare with the utmost conviction that signs and wonders are an integral part of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The whole of Jesus’ ministry recorded in the Gospels, the account of the early church in Acts, and the subsequent history of the church bear eloquent testimony that the Gospel is to be made known both in word and deed, and that those who hear the Gospel should also see marvelous things. The Gospel was never, never meant to be

“In word only, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit.” (1 Thess. 1:5.) We could multiply Scriptures which fully confirm this, but our purpose here is more to examine the conditions for the release of true Divine signs and wonders.

From the New Testament it is abundantly plain that signs and wonders which are from God are the accompaniments of the preaching of the word of God. The word is the prior thing. The signs and wonders follow.

The preaching of the word is attested, confirmed, endorsed and underwritten by the ministry of the Holy Spirit in the miraculous. So, the priority must be given to the declaration of the word, the truth of God. We must seriously question the kind of publicity which advertises “Healing and Miracles” and draws attention to the names of men. There is no evidence that the Apostles followed such a policy, nor that they gave the kind of need-centred messages so popular today. Their number-one-objective was to declare the good news of Jesus, to preach the word of God, and they knew that, as they were faithful in this, God, in His sovereignty, would act by the Holy Spirit to attest His truth.

They expected and looked for that, believed it would happen, and it did!

Look at some Scriptures: Mark 16:20. “They went forth and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the message by the signs that attended it.”

First, the word proclaimed; then the signs granted by the Lord. They preached and the Lord worked.

Acts 4;29-30. “And now Lord look upon their threats and grant Thy servants to speak Thy word with all boldness, while THOU stretchest forth THY hand to heal and signs and wonders are performed through the name of Thy Holy Servant Jesus.” Note again the human responsibility to declare the word with boldness and the Divine affirmation which they sought. Mark also that the signs and wonders are seen, not as coming from man, but the Lord.

Acts 14:3. “They remained for a long time speaking boldly for the Lord, who bore witness to the word of His grace, granting signs and wonders to be done by their hands.” Here again is the same sequence. First the word, then the power of the Lord granted in His sovereign good pleasure to confirm it. There was none of our modern drawing attention to men as miracle workers. Rather attention was directed only to the Lord, and the glory was His alone.

Hebrews 2:3-4 “How shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard Him, while God also bore witness by signs and wonders and various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit, distributed according to His own will.” Once more we see that the miraculous is the sole prerogative of God. It is His to give or to withhold as He wills, and the signs and wonders are released upon and through those declaring the message of salvation.

Acts 5:30-32. “The God of our fathers raised Jesus, whom you killed by hanging him on a tree. God exalted Him at His right hand as Leader and Saviour to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins. And we are witnesses to these things and so is the Holy Spirit who God has given to those who obey Him.” These verses, while not speaking directly of signs and wonders do disclose some of the key things in the declaration of the word to which the Holy Spirit bears witness. The other passages we have looked at reveal that one aspect of this witness of the Holy Spirit is the release of the miraculous.

To What Will the Holy Spirit Bear Witness ?
What are the things proclaimed to which the Holy Spirit will bear witness?

a) The death of Jesus on the Cross. “Jesus Christ and Him crucified” was the central theme of Paul’s preaching in Corinth, and it was such a message that was accompanied by the “demonstration of the Spirit and power.” (see 1 Corinthians 2:1-5.)

b) The resurrection of Jesus. “The God of our fathers raised Jesus.” This too was right at the heart of apostolic preaching. The power at work in those who believe was recognized as the same power which raised Jesus from the dead.

c) The exaltation of the Lord Jesus to the right hand of the Father. The early Christians were totally assured of this because they had received “the promise of the Father”, the outpoured Holy Spirit. To them this was the incontrovertible evidence that Jesus had indeed been exalted to the Throne in
heaven.

All of these were God’s acts. The Father sent the Son to give His life a ransom for many. God gave Him up for us all.(Romans 8:32.) God raised Jesus from the dead. Again and again that note sounds throughout the New Testament. It was God also who highly exalted Him. This was the word of God which the apostles preached. It concerned first and foremost what God had done in Christ. It was centered in what God had done and not primarily on the need of man. From these acts of God there flowed glorious consequences for those who believed the witness concerning them. They were granted repentance and the forgiveness of sins, thus dealing with the root causes of a man’s subsidiary needs.

It is to the preaching and exposition of these things that the Holy Spirit will continue to bear witness: The Cross of Jesus in all its New Testament dimensions and significance as a substitutionary death, a sacrifice once and for all, acceptable to God, a bearing of the wrath of God against sin, a vindication of the righteousness of God, and a death blow to both the power and guilt of sin.

The resurrection of the Lord Jesus from the dead, His physical rising from the grave in a glorious transformed body, Jesus Himself, this same Jesus who had been crucified; all the spiritual significance of resurrection life imparted to believers.

The exaltation of Jesus and all that means in relation to victory over all the powers of darkness; Jesus exalted to the supreme place of power an authority, with all things under His feet. Jesus is Lord!

Repentance and the forgiveness of sins as the gifts of God’s grace. The Holy Spirit will assuredly testify to the declaration of this full-orbed New Testament Gospel, and where signs and wonders occur in such a context, we need not fear that they are the deceptive counterfeits of a very cunning and powerful enemy, but we will know God is confirming His word. But where the order is reversed, and the emphasis is on the signs more than the word, let the Christian beware, and where the focus is on man rather than on the Lord, let him be doubly careful.

Through Whom Will God Work ?

We have looked briefly and concentratedly at the kind of proclamation to which we may expect the Holy Spirit to bear witness with signs and wonders.

What of the caliber of the men through whom He will work? We cannot ignore that signs and wonders were wrought “through the apostles.” (Acts 2:43.), that they were done “among the people by the hands of the apostles.”

(Acts 5:12.) Stephen, we read, “Full of grace and power did great wonders and signs among the people.” (Acts 6:8.) The people in Samaria heard Philip “and saw the signs which he did.” (Acts 8:6.) “God did extraordinary miracles by the hands of Paul.” (Acts 9:11.) It must be worth noting the qualities of these men, for the release of signs and wonders through them had some relationship to the kind of men they were.

Here are some of the qualities that fitted them to be entrusted as the vehicles of such power ministry:

1) They were Spirit filled men. Without exception they were men who had known the overwhelming experience of being baptised in the Holy Spirit, and they were living in His fullness.

2) They were humble men, wholly intent on the glory of God. They were not seeking a name or glory for themselves. “Why do you stare at us, as though by our power or piety we had made him walk?” So said Peter after the amazing healing of the lame man. Their heart intention was that the name of
Jesus be glorified. They did not seek publicity. They did not advertise their healing ministry. Philip did not hesitate, when the Lord commanded him, to lay down a powerful ministry of evangelism and signs and wonders in Samaria to go to the desert road to share the word of the Gospel with one seeker. Paul’s very first preaching concerned Jesus, “That He is the Son of God.”(Acts 9:20)
He was ever more eager to proclaim that than to exercise a ministry of signs and wonders. These signs were there, but never as the primary focus of his work.

3) They were men of utter submission to the Lordship of Jesus Christ.

Their message was, “Jesus is Lord.” And they were living testimony to the message. They were His willing bond slaves.

It was through such wholly obedient men that God was pleased to grant that signs and wonders be done in the name of His Holy Servant Jesus.

4) They were men bound together by the Spirit in one Church, the living body of Christ. None worked in lonely isolation, but always in relationship. The picture of the early church community is one of vibrant togetherness. Peter and John were together when the lame man at the beautiful gate of the temple was healed. Paul always worked in team with others.

The signs and wonders flowed from men living in true and loving relationships in the undivided Church.

5) They were men of holy character. Their lives were exemplary. Paul could say to the believers in Thessalonica, “You are witnesses and God also how holy, righteous and blameless was our behavior to you believers.” (1 Thess. 2:10.) Peter could make an urgent plea for holiness because he himself walked in holiness. (See 1 Peter 1:15-16.) Stephen was “full of grace and power”, and he had the glory and beauty of the Lord even on his face. (Acts 6:8.) Holiness is in fact the sum of all the other qualities we have noted and their holiness sprang from their intense love relationship with their Lord.

We are now in a position to draw together what we have been saying and to highlight some of the critical issues for the church today in relation to signs and wonders.

The New Testament knows nothing of a Gospel devoid of the
confirmatory evidence of signs and wonders. The miraculous is
everywhere in the scriptural accounts of the ministry of Jesus, of the apostles and of the early church. It is equally clear, however, that the signs and wonders were not the focus of the life of the early believers. They did not measure success in terms of the frequency or magnitude of the signs following the word, but rather in the victories of the good news in bringing repentance and faith to those who had previously been in darkness. Lives changed into the likeness of Christ was the supreme aim of their mission. “My little children, with whom I am again in travail until Christ be formed in you.”

(Galatians 4:19.) Such was the burning desire in the heart of Paul. The apostles “devoted themselves to prayer and the ministry of the word.”, while the people “devoted themselves to the apostles teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.” They discovered that, as they walked in these ways, God sovereignly stood with them and of His grace and by His power He granted signs and wonders to affirm His own witness to the truth.

The Dangers of Seeking Signs and Wonders

There is a danger today that we may pursue signs and wonders apart from their New Testament context. In modern parlance we may be tempted to a signs and wonders “trip”, giving these phenomena a priority and attention which the Scripture does not accord them. Such a course is fraught with the hazards of deception and confusion. There is reason to fear that some are already ensnared in this trap. We see men glorified as healers and miracle workers and publicly advertised as such. This inevitably puts tremendous pressure on these men to perform each time they appear.

Seekers after phenomena eagerly rush to wherever such are reported to be occurring, and some seem to revel in repeated highly charged emotional experiences which produce little of long-term observable changes in character. Such scenarios provide fruitful ground both for self-deception and Satanic deception, and are far removed from the New Testament pattern of the priority of the word, and the gracious release of signs and wonders by the sovereign will of God.

Why The Lack of True Signs and Wonders ?

If we lament the lack of genuine signs and wonders among us today, the first place to look is at the word being preached. Is it the New Testament Gospel in its fullness? Is it the Gospel expounded in Paul’s letter to the Romans or the Galatians, or is it a watered-down and sugar-coated man-centred substitute eliminating the terrible facts of man’s sin and lostness, the need for radical repentance, the power of the atoning blood of Christ, and the absolute necessity of a Holy Spirit birth from above ?

The second place to look is at the quality of our lives. Are we the kind of people to whom the Lord will entrust the working of signs and wonders? How do our lives compare with those of Peter, Stephen, Philip, Paul? Do we know the fullness of the Spirit? Are we truly humbled under the mighty hand of God, neither seeking or receiving glory for ourselves? Are we sold out to Jesus Christ as Lord? Are we united in bonds of love and loyalty with brothers and sisters in the Body of Christ? Are we, like Paul, holy in all our conduct?

Thirdly, we need to look at the level of our faith and expectancy. Does it match that of those who prayed in that urgent time of calling on the Lord in Acts ch. 4:24-30? Are we looking and believing for the Lord to stretch out His hand and heal?

Fourthly, we need to see the crippling effects of division within the Church. The New Testament signs and wonders took place in an undivided Church, which knew nothing of institutionalism or denominationalism.

Perhaps this is the greatest barrier to the true power of God being released in
our day.

In the New Testament church they had no need for teaching seminars on signs and wonders. There were no techniques to be learnt. Rather, a sincere and pure devotion to the Lord Jesus Christ, the unity of the Spirit and a fearless commitment to declare the whole counsel of God provided the environment in which God was pleased to add His witness by granting the release of these miracles. As it was then, so it may be today.

The Preterist Spirit of Deception
William B. Chalfant

Introduction

Some months ago I wrote a refutation of the teaching of a prominent “partial” preterist, who has been very active in spreading this doctrine throughout the ranks of apostolic pentecostals. I wrote at that time that I did not think that the teaching of prophecy should be a “point of fellowship”. I have been forced to modify that stand when I begin to thoroughly understand the intentions and the purpose of preterism. This is an extremely dangerous teaching, which, when taken to its ultimate conclusions, is contrary to true revival and the preaching of the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Those who reject a future millennium, and effectively teach and preach against the future catching up of the Bride (whether before, during, or after the tribulation) and the imminent coming of the Lord Jesus Christ, at least in a basic premillennial sense, ought to realize that they are being very detrimental to the body of Christ. Their teaching is quite patently false, and untenable in the Scripture. Partial preterism is an untenable compromise between the more consistent “full preterism” and the apostolic teaching which is basic premillennialism.

A “partial preterist” stand invariably seems to settle upon the heresy of amillennialism, which is contrary to apostolic teaching in the Scriptures. It is a variation of the doctrine of Hymenaeus, whom Paul delivered to Satan because of his blasphemous teaching that the resurrection was past (1 Timothy 1.20, 2 Timothy 2.17,18). This type of teaching eats like a cancer on the body of Christ.

I do not wish to have a bad spirit, and I do not wish to cease to be a gentleman, but I cannot help but condemn this false notion that the majority of New Testament prophecy has already been fulfilled in the first century, when common historical knowledge and Scripture shows that it has not. This is ignorance compounded with deception. Moreover, the witness of the Holy Ghost shows us that this is simply deception.

The Rosetta Stone Prophecy Of The Sixth Seal

The Bible is one third prophecy. Prophecies concerning the second coming of the Lord, the future of the New Testament church, and the endtimes (the tribulation, the millennium, the last judgment, etc.), are all interconnected. There are common threads which run throughout these prophecies.

The “sixth seal” of Revelation 6 is a “key” to coordinating and assimilating certain endtime prophecies (in both testaments) associated with one particular event in prophecy. It is like a “rosetta stone”. In other words, the identification of the common elements of the “sixth seal” brings certain prophecies into harmony with one another.

The Heavenly Signs In The Sun, The Moon, And The Stars

For example, the common “key elements” associated with the sixth seal of Revelation 6 are the heavenly signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars, as well as the sign of the “heavens departing as a scroll”. The sixth seal also has a “relationship” with the period which some identify as the “Great Tribulation” in that, when the Great Tribulation of three and one-half years shown to be concluded, then the sixth seal is opened (Rev. 6.12, Matt. 24.29). The sixth seal announces the beginning of the “wrath of God”. Surely, no one thinks the wrath of God upon the entire world has already taken place.

One of the serious errors of interpretation of the preterist view is to reduce the wrath of God upon the nations to simply the wrath of God upon the city of Jerusalem and the Jews. We take the literal view unless the literal view is shown to be an utter impossibility. That is the method of the apostles. God says what He means and means what He says. The preterist, on the other hand, is fixated upon Jerusalem and 70 AD. He must perforce compress and twist (especially Old Testament) prophecies pertaining to the entire world, and compress them to fit his scheme of first century Jerusalem being the object of almost all endtime prophecies. He does by playing upon words such as “earth”, “world”, and attempting to “provincialize” prophecies that concern the world to isolated areas in the Middle East. This is not the case as we shall attempt to show.

History Does Not Record The Fulfillment Of Endtime Prophecies That Are Worldwide In Scope

The reason why the preterist must reduce prophecies in scope, and, in many cases, attempt to show that they have already come to pass centuries ago, is because he cannot maintain his preterist scheme without doing this. He must destroy the future endtime scope of many prophecies in order to maintain his preterist argument. Of course, there are a number of prophecies pertaining to the first coming of the Lord that have been fulfilled, and there are some other prophecies that have been fulfilled, obviously. But the great class of endtime prophecies pertaining to the cataclysmic events preceding the second coming of the Lord have not yet been fulfilled (although we see the dawning and the working of their fulfillment in a number of events today). They are associated with the coming judgment of this world, and with the Blessed Hope of the Christian for the return of Jesus Christ. Herein is where the preterist and the amillennialist do great damage.

The singular heavenly events associated with the opening of the sixth seal, and with certain other prophecies pertaining to the last days, have never yet been reported in history, and may be assumed not to have happened yet, as, for example, in Revelation 6 we read of a future “great earthquake”, “the sun (turning dark), the moon becoming “as blood”, and the stars “(falling) from heaven” (vss. 12,13). Moreover, the “heaven (will depart) as a scroll when it is rolled together”, and “every mountain and island (will be) moved out of their places” (vs.14,15). This is such an astounding worldwide event, we are told, that:

…the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men,and every bondman, and every free man, (will hide) themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains. -Revelation 6.15,16 KJV

And yet preterists want to tell us that this prophecy (written in c.96 AD no less) merely refers to the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem in 70 AD! In order to handle such prophecies as this, the preterist must resort to the method of extreme allegorism, interpreting events in an exaggerated way, and actually twisting the plain statements of Scripture in order to facilitate his theories. One of his great allies, preserved by the Catholic church, was the Jewish traitor Josephus, who was a Roman sycophant.

Even the questionable reporting of the first century Jewish historian Josephus does not present a view

of such a worldwide, unusual astronomical event as is described in Revelation 6, which was written well after the destruction of the Temple in 70 AD ( 96 AD, according to many ancient and modern historians). And even if we were to determine that the book of Revelation was written before 70 AD (which is very doubtful), the worldwide catastrophic events of Revelation 6 cannot be shown to have already occurred in history. This is why the preterist must tenaciously cling to his allegorical “biblical imagery” method of prophetic interpretation. Without the extreme allegorism of his method of interpretation, his scheme will not stand at all.

The Old Testament Prophets Were Concerned With More Than Just The City Of Jerusalem

Preterists, by and large, seem to think that most of the Old Testament prophecy concerns only Old Testament events or the 70 AD destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem. They seem to reject the idea that Old Testament prophecy concerns future cataclysmic endtime events on a worldwide scale.

Isaiah 13 also prophesies of events involved with the opening of the sixth seal seen in Revelation 6, clearly indicating that this prophecy pertains to more than the destruction of a mere city in Israel:

Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, cruel both with wrath and fierce anger, to lay the land desolate: and he shall destroy the sinners thereof out of it. For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light: the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine. And I will punish the world for their evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; and I will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease, and will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible.I will make a man more precious than fine gold; even a man than the golden wedge of Ophir. Therefore I will shake the heavens, and the earth shall remove out of her place, in the wrath of the LORD of hosts, and in the day of his fierce anger. -Isaiah 13.9-13 KJV

Obviously, this is not just a localized vengeance against the lone city of Jerusalem ,but it involves the entire world with great events occurring, which even obscure the atmosphere, and involve a “shaking of the heavens”, and with the planet being knocked off of her axis, or out of her orbit (“the earth shall remove out of her place”). Is this just “Old Testament biblical imagery”, as preterists conveniently claim, or is this a prophecy of the endtimes concerning the entire planet? The interpretation of the preterist would have us believe that God is only speaking about a city and the surrounding provincial area in the first century. I believe this preterist method of interpretation comes originally from the German school of higher criticism, which sought a way to do away with the miraculous and the extraordinary.

Joel Foresaw Worldwide, Cataclysmic Events

Joel also prophesies of events surrounding the sixth seal:

And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pout out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those day will I pour out my spirit. And I will show wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke. The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the LORD come. -Joel 2.28-31 KJV

This time period cannot be restricted to the first century (although the first part of the prophecy begins to be fulfilled on the day of Pentecost, not too long after the “last days” had begun). Joel is also obviously referring to the last day sixth seal in verse 31. The common elements of the sixth seal are the heavenly signs pertaining to the sun, the moon, and the stars. These heavenly signs immediately precede the wrath of God and the “day of the Lord”.

The First Century Shows No Evidence Of The Sixth Seal Worldwide, Cataclysmic Events Seen In Joel, Revelation 6, And In Isaiah 13

We saw in Revelation 6 and in Isaiah 13 that these “sixth seal” heavenly signs were of a worldwide nature. There is no evidence of any such worldwide, catastophic signs such as these in the first century that is credible. Where, for example, in the first century during the siege of Jerusalem does one see “kings of the earth”, “great men, rich men, chief captains, might men, and every bondman and every free man” hiding themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains, crying out, “hide us…from the wrath of the Lamb” (Rev. 6.16)? The wrath of the Roman army is not the wrath of the Lamb, nor was it seen on a scale outlined in the endtime prophecies. The “day of the Lord” is ushered in with worldwide catastrophic signs and wonders. This did not happen in the first century. The New Testament church was launched with the beginning of the outpouring of the Spirit in “the last days” (plural), but the conclusion of the “last days” prophecy in Joel is yet to be fulfilled. This lets us know that the “last days” (plural) did not conclude in the first century, but have not yet ended (the apostle Peter and David have caused us to realize that a day in God’s eyes could be as long as a “thousand years”, 2 Peter 3.8, Psalms 90.4). The term “day” is used in several different ways in the Bible.

The Daniel 2 Prophecy Informs Us That The “Latter Days” Extend Into The Modern “Nation-State” Era Of History

A careful reading of Daniel 2 will demonstrate that the period of time referred to in prophecy as “the last days”, “the latter times”, “latter days” etc., extends into the modern times of the “nation states”, which arose following the demise of the Roman empire (“the legs of iron”). We are now living in the period of the “feet part of iron and part of clay” (Daniel 2.33).

But there is a God in heaven that revealeth secrets, and maketh known to the king Nebuchadnezzar what shall be in the latter days. Thy dream, and the vision of thy head upon thy bed, are these. -Daniel 2.28 KJV

It is clear from Daniel 2 that the term “latter days” refers not only to the “legs of iron” (the Roman empire, which extends chronologically approximately from 168 BC to 476 AD, in the case of the “western leg”, and to 1453 AD, in the case of the “eastern leg”), but must also refer to the succeeding “feet part of iron and part of clay”, which, of course, extends into our modern times, the times of the modern nation-states. The return of the Lord Jesus Christ (“the Stone made without hands”) is prophesied to occur during the period of “the feet (made) part of iron and part of clay”. Thus, the return of the Lord Jesus Christ could not have occurred during the period of “the legs of iron” (the Roman empire), but must occur during the succeeding period of the “feet” (or modern times). The “Stone” smashes the “feet” and not “the legs”. Moreover, the Stone smashes the Gentile system and not Jerusalem in the endtimes.

Joel Actually Prophesies Of The Deliverance Of Jerusalem Rather Than Its First Century Judgment

In fact, Joel, rather than prophesying the destruction of Jerusalem, actually prophesies of its deliverance:

For, behold, in those days, and in that time, when I shall bring again the captivity of Judah and Jerusalem. I will gather all nations, and will bring them down into the valley of Jehoshaphat, and will plead with them there for people and for my heritage Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations, and parted my land. -Joel 3.1,2 KJV

Joel wrote these prophecies during 835-796 BC. They were not fulfilled during the Babylonian invasion of 586 BC. when the Temple and the city were basically destroyed. They were not fulfilled during the 66-70 AD assault of the Romans on Jerusalem, when only the Temple was destroyed by fire. They will be fulfilled during the endtimes. If Joel 2.28,29 was fulfilled in approximately 33 AD at Pentecost, we ought to expect that Joel 3.1,2 will similarly be precisely fulfilled. This did not happen in 70 AD. There is coming a day in the which all nations will be gathered against Jerusalem, and God will rise up against the nations of the world to deliver Jerusalem. It has to happen because the word of God is true.

Dispersion Never Refers To The Apostolic Church But Rather To The Jews

Notice that God, in that day, will “plead with them (all nations) there for my people, for my heritage Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations”. It is not the apostolic church that was “scattered among the nations”, but rather the nation of Israel (the Jews) (see Luke 21.24). Moreover, God is not going to “plead with them” (the nations) for His people the Jews in 70 AD. That would be impossible since history shows He did not. Any “pleading” with the Jews (not the nations) in 70 AD would have come before the worldwide dispersion by the Romans. Moreover, this word “plead” is the Hebrew word shaphat, which means “to judge” or “to contend (with)”. It is some future date that God will “plead”with the nations for His people (a future date that is associated with the sixth seal in Revelation 6). How, therefore, can Revelation 6, and these prophecies centering around the sixth seal, simply refer to 70 AD in the first century? When Titus came with his Roman armies, we certainly do not see the Lord Jesus Christ “pleading” with all nations on the behalf of His people the Jews. Rather we see “the days of vengeance” on Jerusalem and the Jews that Jesus spoke about in Luke 21. Why, then, would anyone want to maintain that the prophecy of Joel was completely fulfilled in the first century?

Some Preterists Maintain Endtime Prophecies Are Simply “Old Testament Imagery”

Since it is impossible to make the worldwide, catastrophic events prophesied in the Old and New Testaments fit the provincial Jewish rebellion of 66-70 AD, preterists resort to a biblical interpretative method that brought the world the trinity doctrine: allegorism, or, in its new preterist dress, “biblical imagery”. Using this fanciful method of interpretation, prophecy can mean almost anything anyone wants it to mean. Any careful student of the Bible will realize that this type of interpretative method is the exception rather than the rule in biblical prophecy.

Types And Shadows Do Not Permit Fanciful Flights Into Imaginative Allegory

Of course, types and shadows are used, even in a literal interpretative method. Men are often referred to as “sheep”, “tares”, and “goats”. Israel becomes a “fig tree”, and men are even called “foxes” and “serpents”, while demons are “birds”. But “types” and “shadows” never do away with the reality of described events.

When the Bible says that Jesus ascended up to heaven, and “a cloud received him out of their sight” (Acts 1.9), we are expected to understand that this is a physical description of His ascension When prophecy states that He will come in the clouds of heaven, and the angels said that He would return to earth “in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven” (Acts 1.11), then we are expected to understand that, in this scenario, “clouds” refer to atmospheric clouds that we see almost every day. In other words, clouds must be clouds, unless the context dictates that they cannot possibly be physical clouds.

When Hebrews 12.1 refers to a “cloud of witnesses”, we know that this is not referring to atmospheric clouds in the sky. No one has ever seen human beings form an atmospheric “cloud”! But the return of Jesus Christ back to earth is reported to be visible to every eye on a worldwide (and even in an “otherworldly”) scale. There are a number of ways in which this could be even physically accomplished. Moreover, we are taught that not only all of the “kindreds of the earth”, but those who are physically deceased, will see His visible return (Revelation 1.7, Daniel 7.13, Zechariah 12.10, Matthew 24.30, Matthew 26.64). Zechariah 14 describes this second coming in some detail. The Lord’s feet shall actually stand “in that day” upon the mount of Olives (Zechariah 14.4), following His return to earth at Armageddon. This could not possibly have happened in the first century.

I would invite any student of the word of God to investigate the details of the prophesied battle of Armageddon throughout the word of God. Don’t just take one or two passages and then allegorize them. Joel says that “all nations” will be gathered against Jerusalem one day (not just the Roman armies of Titus). Zechariah says the same. At Armageddon, Zechariah says that the Lord Himself will personally go forth to “fight against those nations” gathered against Jerusalem (Zechariah 14.3). This is not Titus against the Jews in 66-70 AD! The spirits of devils go forth to draw the kings or rulers of the earth to “gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty” (Revelation 16.14). The location is given as “Armageddon” (Joel’s “valley of Jehoshaphat”, or “the judgment of Jehovah”, or, as some have said, the plain of Esdraelon, the valley of Jezreel). At any rate, this great battlefield will have the fate of the city of Jerusalem, and indeed the fate of the world, as its focus, when the nations of the world will be gathered there (Revelation 19.19). The armies of the beast will be defeated by the personal return of the Lord Jesus Christ and not by the armies of Titus, whom, some preterists would have us believe, was serving the beast (as some of them say Nero was the beast!). Thus preterism confuses and obscures the truth of endtime prophecies.

We have seen in the prophecy of Joel how that the “last days” cannot possibly be restricted to the first century only, since the “last days” also envision worldwide, catastrophic events and the deliverance of the city of Jerusalem (as opposed to the preterist interpretation of the destruction of the Temple only in 70 AD). Moreover, the prophecy of Joel does not foretell the use of the Roman armies to destroy the city of Jerusalem, but rather foretells a time when the Lord Himself will plead with “all nations” who have come against the city of Jerusalem, which is the exact opposite of the preterist scenario.

Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision: for the day of the LORD is near in the valley of decision. The sun and the moon shall be darkened, and the stars shall withdraw their shining. The LORD also shall roar out of Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the heavens and the earth shall shake: but the LORD will be the hope of his people, and the strength of the children of Israel. -Joel 3.14-16 KJV

There is the classic key element of the sixth seal (“the sun and the moon shall be darkened, and the stars shall withdraw their shining”). This prophecy is directed to the nations of the world (during the time of the “feet of clay mixed with iron in Daniel 2) and not to the Romans of the first century. It speaks of the future day of the Lord. Moreover, it speaks of the Lord coming to the rescue of Jerusalem (“The LORD also shall roar out of Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem…”), which is hardly the case in 70 AD. Certainly the Lord did not come to the rescue of the Jews in 70 AD. They were being judged for their rejection of the Messiah. A worldwide dispersion of the Jews resulted. Moreover, this prophecy also speaks of the Lord actually sitting in the valley of Jehoshaphat (Megiddo) to judge the nations. Again, hardly 70 AD and the destruction of Jerusalem at that time. Therefore, how can preterists say that Joel was fulfilled in the first century?

There can be little doubt that these endtime prophecies refer to more than just the first century destruction of the city of Jerusalem. And yet Peter said that these events were “in the last days” ( “in the last days saith God”, Acts 2.17). It is evident that, at least in the apostle Peter’s mind, the “last days” encompassed not only the events of the outpouring of the Holy Ghost in Jerusalem, but included the final battle of Armageddon and the actual return of the Lord to Jerusalem, which still have not occurred some 2000 years later. Therefore, to maintain that the “last days” only pertained to the first century is entirely inadequate. In the mind of the preterist, the “last days” apparently only refer to the “last days” of the Mosaic covenant period. But the Mosaic covenant ended on that day that the veil of the Temple was rent from top to bottom as the Savior died on Calvary. It did not end later in 70 AD.

The prophecy in Isaiah 34, which is also connected with the sixth seal, further points out that these events cannot be restricted to just the first century and the destruction of Jerusalem as preterists maintain:

Come near, ye nations, to hear; and hearken, ye people: let the earth hear, and all that is herein; the world, and all things that come forth of it. For the indignation of the LORD is upon all nations, and his fury upon all their armies: he hath utterly destroyed them, he hath delivered them to the slaughter. Their slain also shall be cast out, and their stink shall come up out of their carcasses, and the mountains shall be melted with their blood. And all the host of heaven shall be dissolved, and the heavens shall be rolled together as a scroll: and all their host shall fall down, as the leaf falleth off from the vine, and as a falling fig from the fig tree. -Isaiah 34.1-4 KJV

It is easy to see from this passage that the prophet is not just speaking of first century Jerusalem. Yet this passage is a companion passage to Joel 2 and 3, to Isaiah 13, and to Revelation 6 and Matthew 24. It contains elements that are closely associated with the sixth seal, and the day of the LORD. It cannot be restricted to the first century and the 70 AD destruction of the Temple. The “indignation (wrath) of the LORD” is upon “all nations” (not just Jerusalem). The “host of heaven” is to be “dissolved”, and the “heavens…rolled together as a scroll” (reference Revelation 6.14). If this is a companion passage to the aforementioned prophecies, which describe the same events, then one would be foolish to say that Revelation 6 was fulfilled in the first century and pertained to the destruction of Jerusalem.

Jesus Himself also makes a reference to the events of the sixth seal prophecy in Matthew 24, when He says:

Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. -Matthew 24.29,30 KJV

Again, there are a number of things which should be pointed out in the above passage:

(1) Jesus connects this prophecy with the other sixth seal prophecies, which we have already seen in Revelation, Isaiah, Joel, and Zechariah. Right after the tribulation and just before His coming we see the worldwide, catastrophic signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars. There is the shaking of the powers of heaven.

(2) The worldwide catastrophic signs are connected with the wrath of God upon the nations, the day of the Lord, and the return of the Lord to earth at Armageddon. They have nothing to do with some sort of an “invisible coming in judgment” at Jerusalem in 70 AD as preterism attempts to manufacture.

Important Differences In the Luke 21 Prophecy of The Destruction of Jerusalem

While this particular passage is placed among other passages referring to the endtime Great Tribulation period, and other events associated with the return of the Lord, there are some important differences in this passage that should be pointed out:

The brief Luke 21 passage (Luke 21.20-24), pertaining to the destruction of Jerusalem, is different from the prophecies in Mark 13 and in Matthew 24, even though it is inserted in the midst of other endtime prophecies. Let me explain.

In Luke 21.20-24, Jesus is speaking obviously of the 66-70 AD assault upon Jerusalem by the Roman armies in the first century, whereas, in Matthew 24 and in Mark 13, He is speaking of a future tribulation which will come upon the Jews (and which some believe will come upon the church). Note some very vital differences in Luke 21.20-24:

Jesus does not call the “great tribulation” thlipsis, as He does in the Matthew 24 and Mark 13 descriptions, but rather He calls it “distress” (anangke), an entirely different word (vs. 23). In verse 22 of Luke 21 He says of this period of time, “these be the days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled”. Not all things which were ever prophesied concerning the entire endtimes, but rather “all things which were written” concerning these particular days.

Luke 21 Describes The First Century Worldwide Dispersion Of The Jews And Prophesies Of The Times Of The Gentiles Whereas Matthew 24 And Mark 13 Does Not

Moreover, only in Luke 21 does Jesus inform us that this must be a first century event (which has already been recorded in history). He says that the Jews will “be led away captive into all nations” (vs. 24). This is the worldwide dispersion promoted under the Romans, and is historically verified. It has lasted nearly 1900 plus years. In this Luke 21 prophecy, Jesus also tells us that the city of Jerusalem “shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled” (Luke 21.24). This is not speaking of the “fullness of the Gentiles”, as in Roman 11, which describes the future time when the full number of Gentiles will be placed in the body of Christ, the New Testament church. This is rather speaking of the “reign” of the Gentile system of empires over the nation of Israel. Jesus places this domination of the Gentiles in opposition to the downfall of Jerusalem.

We know the “times of the Gentiles” could not possibly have been “fulfilled” in the first century, since Daniel 2 is quite clear that the Gentile times of rule will extend beyond the Roman empire (the two legs of iron of Nebuchadnezzar’s Image, which lasted until at least 1453 AD when the Turks conquered Constantinople or Byzantium) into the successive modern day “feet of iron mixed with clay” (see Daniel 2 for a description of the Gentile empire system, which will be smashed by the return of Jesus Christ, the Sone made without hands). The “times of the Gentiles” may have recently began to come to an end when a Jewish General conquered the entire city of Jerusalem in 1967, although the status of the Palestinian areas is not clear. Moreover, the worldwide dispersion of the Jews certainly did not end in the first century!

No Reference To The Abomination Of Desolation In Luke 21

In the Luke 21 passage, there is significantly no reference to “the abomination of desolation”. There is a specific warning about the placement of the Abomination of Desolation seen in Matthew 24 and Mark 13 for the inhabitants of Jerusalem and Judea to flee, but in the Luke 21 passage, the warning is not because of the “abomination of desolation”, but it is rather because the city will be surrounded by armies. Jesus, in Mark 13 and Matthew 24, says that the Abomination of Desolation has to be the same one that Daniel warned about. In Daniel 11, the ruler who places the “Abomination of Desolation” in the holy place is a “vile person”, he “will do according to his will”, “he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god”, he “shall speak marvelous things against the God of gods”, and he “shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished”. He will not “regard the God of his fathers, nor the desire of women”, nor “regard any god; for he shall magnify himself above all” (see Daniel 11). Paul says that he is a “man of sin”, who “opposes and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshiped”, and he “as God sitteth in the temple of god, showing himself that he is God” (2 Thessalonians 2.4). Nero, who was a cowardly suicide for example, fails to “qualify” as the one who placed the Abomination of Desolation in the holy place, thus setting off “the great tribulation”. Titus certainly could not “qualify”, since Josephus and the preterists have made him practically an “agent of God”. There is just no individual in the first century who could qualify as the “man of sin”, who did the things that Gabriel, Jesus, and Paul warned us about. Preterists are forced to dredge up lesser men, procurators and Jewish rebel leaders, for example, to force them into the scriptural mold of the Anti-christ

In the Luke 21 passage, the coming of the Roman armies are a signal to flee, but in the Matthew 24 and Mark 13 passages, the signal to flee is “when you see the abomination of desolation…stand in the holy place” (Matthew 24.15 and Mark 13.14). Matthew 24 and Mark 13 are connected with the prophecies in Daniel, but Luke 21 is not. Matthew 24 and Mark 13 describe an endtime event (the great tribulation) which immediately precedes the coming of the Lord, while the passage in Luke 21.20-24 describes the 66-70 AD assault upon Jerusalem.

Certainly there is a break in Luke 21.25 with the passage of Luke 21.20-24. Luke 21.25 speaks of the coming of the Lord, but it is not in context with Luke 21.20-24. Luke 21.25 is rather in context with Matthew 24.29,30 and Mark 13.24-27. That there is a “break” between Luke 21.24 and Luke 21.25 anyone can easily see by comparing the events described in Matthew and Mark with the events described in Luke 21. This is evident to anyone who carefully compares these three passages. A cursory reading will deceive someone into missing the differences. Luke did not describe the details of the “great tribulation” period of three and one-half years, and he did not mention the the placement of the Abomination of Desolation which initiates the “great tribulation” period. Luke, unlike Matthew and Mark, did not mention the reference of Jesus to Daniel the prophet because Luke was not describing the “great tribulation” period. Jesus prophesied of the endtimes and Jesus prophesied of the 70 AD destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem.

In the Matthew 24 prophecy, Matthew 24.2 is the only mention of the 70 AD destruction of the Temple (the first century punishment of the Jews). Nothing is said of the Roman armies, the worldwide dispersion, or the “times of the Gentiles”. The succeeding prophecy covers the church age, the endtimes, the great tribulation period, and the coming of the Lord. Mark 13 has the same pattern (many scholars think that Matthew derived much of his gospel from Mark as a resource). Mark 13.2 is the only reference to the destruction of the Temple in 70 AD. The rest of the Mark 13 prophecy pertains to the church age, the great tribulation period, and the coming of the Lord.

The conclusion is, therefore, that Luke 21.20-24 refers to the 66-70 AD assault upon Jerusalem (the Jewish rebellion), while Matthew 24 and Mark 13 make only a slight reference to the destruction of the Temple (one verse), and the rest of their prophecy refers to the church age, the great tribulation as described also in Daniel, beginning with the Abomination of Desolation, and concluding with the glorious coming of the Lord. Luke 21.25-28 breaks with Luke 21.20-24 and describes the second coming of the Lord from the sixth seal to His triumphant return at Armageddon.

Daniel says concerning this “great tribulation” period

And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book. And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. -Daniel 12.1,2 KJV

The prophecy of Daniel connects a general resurrection following in the immediate general time frame of the “great tribulation” period. Jesus also connects His triumphant return from on high immediately following the end of the “great tribulation” period (Matthew 24.29,30). For these reasons we cannot establish that Luke 21 is connected with the “great tribulation” period at all. For in Luke 21, the Jews are scattered worldwide and dispersed. This worldwide dispersion of the Jews is limited in that it will only last “until the times of the Gentiles” be fulfilled.

Preterists have erred in that they have been unwilling to note the differences between Matt. 24 and Luke

21 concerning these prophecies, but lumped them all together because it helps them in their scheme to link the coming of the Lord (in judgment) to 70 AD. It is important to rightly divide the word of truth. One (Luke 21.20-24) is a prophecy which introduced the dispersion of the Jews among the Gentiles in 70 AD, while the other (Matthew 24) is a prophecy which introduces the coming of the Lord in power and glory at the end of the church age (an event which has not yet occurred).

THE GREAT TRIBULATION CANNOT FIT THE FIRST CENTURY

A study of the Great Tribulation (“the Time of Jacob’s Trouble” according to Jeremiah 30.7) shows that this period did not occur in the first century. There are a number of reasons why the Great Tribulation, as it is described to us in the scriptures, could not have taken place in the first century, and did not take place, given the historical record that we have. It is wrong to try to “force” this prophesied event into the first century if it did not indeed actually happen during the first century.

Some Reasons Why The Great Tribulation (The Time of Jacob’s Trouble) Cannot Fit The First Century:

(1) There was no “beast” in the first century, who caused all of the inhabitants of the earth to receive a mark in their forehead or in their right hand so that they could buy or sell (Revelation 13.15-18). Such a commandment to the Jews would have caused a widescale riot because of the Scriptural prohibition against receiving marks in the flesh (Leviticus 19.28). The technological capacity did not exist.

(2) There are no historical reports of the ministry of the Two Witnesses, with the astounding Old Testament miraculous signs done by them, fire being called down from heaven, water into blood, plagues upon the masses of humanity, etc. (Revelation 11.3-7).

(3) There are no historical reports of the public murder of these Two Witnesses in the city of Jerusalem in the first century, which was witnessed and rejoiced over worldwide by the nations (Revelation 11.8-11). The communications and technological ability did not then exist as it does today.

(4) There are no historical reports of the public resurrection of these Two Witnesses (Revelation 11.11,12).

(5) There are no historical reports of a great earthquake in Jerusalem immediately following the public resurrection and ascension of these Two Witnesses, which is a public event.

There are many other notable events prophesied to occur during the time of the “great tribulation” period. If this already happened in the first century, we should expect some historical evidence pertaining to this, other than the corrupted report of the Roman sycophant Josephus, which does not (even with its Catholic interpretations) satisfy any of these prophecies.

WHAT ABOUT THE FEW CONFUSING PASSAGES CONCERNING HIS COMING?

Should we jump to false conclusions because there are a few passages of doubtful interpretation concerning the time period of the coming of the Lord? Folks who want to attack a doctrinal system always find a few mice to throw into the elephant pen. I don’t think so. First of all, the scripture is quite clear that no man knows the day nor the hour of His return (Matthew 25.13). Then why would we want to add a 70 AD “return” to prove that we did know when (even though we might unscripturally qualify this coming by calling it “a coming in judgment)”? Thus we would unfortunately join the “date setters”. Only we would set our dates behind rather than in front! I do not believe in date setting.

One Day Is As A Thousand Years But He Could Come At Any Moment
But Actually He Has Already Supposedly “Come In Judgment” Invisibly?

Peter, as noted, following the psalmist David, used the idea that “one day is as a thousand years” (2 Peter 3.8, Psalms 90.4) in his interpretation of prophecy. Therefore, the “last days” could indeed encompass several thousand years. But the preterists, in effect, hold that this teaching of Peter’s is no longer valid. The “last days” is restricted to the same generation in which the man Jesus lived. Jesus, they say, had to come in the time of His own generation or else the Bible is in error and misinterpreted. Since the preterists know that Jesus really did not come a second time in the first century, they have invented a substitute type of “coming (in judgment)”. This was an “invisible” coming, just like the supposed 1914 coming and the 1842 coming of the Russellites and the Seventh Day Adventists.

Jesus made it quite clear that no man knew the day or hour of His coming, and that He could come at any moment. Our responsibility was to preach His return and to be ready at any time for His return, even though He went into “a far country” and tarried “a long time”. This “at-any-moment” coming some of the preterists by their teaching have effectively destroyed, and have damaged the readiness and the expectancy of the saints for the return of their Lord. They claim that they still preach the coming of the Lord, but I am very doubtful that this is true, since there is little or no evidence of it.

What About Matthew 10.23?

This scripture has more than one interpretation. While it is true to say that it has only one correct interpretation, it is dogmatic and incorrect to say that it has only one interpretation. Moreover, it must be interpreted in its context. Matthew 10.23 was a saying of Jesus which was written down many years after His resurrection. This was one of those statements where even the “inflection” of the Lord’s voice might have conveyed a special meaning. But we cannot go on “inflections”. The book of Matthew was written, according to some sources, 58-68 AD. That would certainly put the writing of the book before the destruction of the Temple in 70 AD. And the context of Matthew 10.22 must also be considered for Matthew 10.23 to be understood:

And ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved. But when they persecute you in this city, flee ye into another: for verily I say unto you, Ye shall not have gone over the cities of Israel, till the Son of man be come. -Matthew 10.22,23

Jesus has put this passage in the context of “enduring to the end”. Therefore, verse 23 also has to be in the context of the “end” of things.

Also, the context involves “persecution”. Moreover, the phrase “the cities of Israel” has to be in contrast with the phrase “all men”. Jesus was warning His disciples that the task was formidable, and that they would be “hated of all men” for His name’s sake. It was a daunting task that involved persecution and opposition, but enduring to the end and never giving up was the only way to survive. In fact, the disciples would not even have gone over all the cities of Israel with the gospel before His return, because there was only a 37 year period before the uprising in Jerusalem was crushed by the Romans. It is doubtful today that the apostles (and disciples of today) have even yet gone over all the cities of Israel. Many of the disciples left Jerusalem many years before the 66-70 AD Jewish Rebellion. In other words, we don’t have to presuppose a 70 AD invisible “coming” of the Lord to understand the difficulties in going over the cities of Israel with the gospel before He returns in glory!

It is presumptuous to put a time element on this type of a passage. There are two many variables. What does “enduring to the end” mean time-wise? Are we not still required even today at this late date to “endure to the end”? How can His disciples be “hated of all men” if their activities are so short-lived as to be restricted to a small number of years in one little country in the first century?

What relationship does the phrase “hated of all men” have to do with the length of the time involved before He returns? By 70 AD, the gospel had not yet been preached in the New World to the Indians unless we want to believe the book of Mormon. The gospel had not yet been preached to the Eskimoes, or to the Australians or the New Zealanders. Yes, it had been preached to the known ancient world (the relative boundaries of the ancient Roman empire), but not to “every nation” as Jesus required in Matthew 24.14.

The apostle Paul’s remarks in Romans and in Colossians must be taken in their context. For example, in Romans 10 the apostle Paul is referring to Psalms 19.1-4 and the declaration of creation concerning the glory of God. He is not speaking about the Acts 2.38 message of the gospel of the kingdom. Paul’s question, “Have they not heard?” (Romans 10.18) is referring to Psalms 19 and the witness of creation to savage mankind (not the gospel of Acts 2.38). In Colossians 1.6 Paul uses the phrase to the effect that the gospel has come into “all the world”, but we must consider that he means “all the known ancient world”. Certainly, the apostles of the first century reached all of their known (ancient) world (Mark 16.20 says they “went forth, and preached every where”), but the commandment is to “(preach) the gospel of the kingdom in all the world for a witness unto all nations” (Matthew 24.14). That is the unfinished task of the New Testament church. The “full number” of the Gentiles is apparently not yet come in, and the task of the New Testament church remains. Were it finished, then there should be no need for the witness to remain on earth, because He says, “and then shall the end come” (vs. 14).

That is why there is another interpretation to the effect that the disciples would not even have gone over every community in their own little country before the return of the Lord. It takes men years sometimes to reach a city. They pour out their labor and some even spend their lives there. To blithely think that in just a short number of years the disciples could have reached the entire country of Israel with the gospel is a bit ambitious. This is especially true when we realize that the Jews very shortly after Pentecost basically rejected the gospel and the disciples had to turn to the Gentiles. Surely, one is not prepared to maintain that the disciples had thoroughly gone over every city in Israel before the Jews turned away from the gospel?

It is not correct to assert that there is one, and only one, interpretation of Matthew 10.23. Moreover, Matthew 10.23, if it be interpreted to mean that Jesus had in mind a “coming judgment of Israel and Jerusalem” when He spoke of His return, simply does not mesh with the rest of the scriptures pertaining to His return. In other words, if we apply the understanding of “a coming in judgment of Israel” across the board to the scriptures pertaining to the coming of the Lord, we cause confusion. If one can prove that all of the cities of Israel have been “gone over” since 70 AD then that might help place the fulfillment of this prophecy in the 70 AD attack upon Jerusalem, but if all of the cities of Israel have not been “gone over”, then the fulfillment of this prophecy remains open.

What About Matthew 16.28?

Matthew 16.28 cannot be taken out of context. It must be understood in relation to Matthew 16.27:

For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works. Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom. -Matthew 16.27,28 KJV

Whatever we do with Matthew 16.28, we cannot use it to represent some kind of an invisible “coming in judgment” in 70 AD. If the coming were “invisible”, then who would “see it”?

The reason is that when Matthew 16.28 is taken in context with Matthew 16.27 it becomes obvious that Jesus is not speaking about a 70 AD “coming in judgment”. Jesus is speaking about His triumphant personal return to earth at the end of the (new covenant) age. He is referring to His return from on high at Armageddon. And no one surely holds that Armageddon has already occurred. Surely not!

Jesus is coming “in the glory of his Father with his angels”. This glorious coming did not happen in the first century and there is no scriptural or other confirmation that it did. This is the return from on high, when, as John wrote, “every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him” (Revelation 1.7). Moreover, the church would have been already “caught up” to meet the Lord in the air (that is, if you hold a pre-trib position, both pre-trib and post-trib would hold that seeing the Lord come would be synonymous with being caught up to meet Him when He comes). The church age would have ended and there would be a ruling and reigning church with Christ here personally on the earth in the Millennium. The milennial reign presupposes more than just a spiritual, invisible coming. Revelation 5.10 says that we shall reign on earth with Him. Paul says that we do not yet have our crowns but will one day receive them (2 Tim. 4.8). How could we be already reigning in the millennium without having received our crowns in heaven, and having come back to earth with Him to reign? At what point did this happen?

Moreover, at the coming of the Lord mentioned in Matthew 16.27 the rewards are given to “every man according to his works”. Have the rewards already been passed out?

If Matthew 16.28 relates to the “coming in judgment” in 70 AD, then where is Matthew 16.27 (the verse above) in 70 AD?

Were crowns already given in the first century? Were the rewards already passed out at His coming which some were supposed to be alive and seeing in that century? And where does that leave the rest of the New Testament church in the centuries following the first century? Will the rewards be passed out twice? Once for the invisible coming, and then later when the rest of the church is caught up at His genuine second coming.

Almost the exact description of this coming is given in Matthew 25.31,32, “When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory: And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats”.

This is not a 70 AD “coming in judgment”. In 70 AD, the Lord did not return with His holy angels, according to any evidence that we have. The Lord did not sit down to judge the nations in 70 AD. So we can establish that this coming “in the glory of his Father with his angels” did not happen in 70 AD. Some of the epistles were written after 70 AD (see 1,2,3 John). Why didn’t they mention all of this? Why didn’t some of the apostolic men, who knew the apostles personally, mention this? Why wasn’t the disappearance of the great apostle John noted if he remained alive until the invisible coming and then disappeared? We have some of the men’s writings who knew these apostles.

We Still Must Explain Matthew 16.28

That still leaves us with the problem of explaining Matthew 16.28 concerning those who were standing there listening to Jesus, who would not taste of death “till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom”. We do note that the word “see” is significant. It is possible to see something that you will never live to personally experience. Moses was allowed to “see” the Promised Land of Canaan, but he never personally lived to experience it.

Jesus did not say that there were those standing there with Him who would not taste of death until the Son of man came. Rather Jesus said that they would not taste of death until they saw the coming of the Son of man in his kingdom. They would live to see His coming. We know, for example, that the apostle John saw his visions of the coming of the Lord before he (John) died. (1) since we know that Jesus has not yet returned in the glory of His Father with His holy angels, and (2) since we know that all of the men with Him that day died, it is the best answer available. To say that Jesus had to return before the end of the first century because of this one scripture is like trying to make the word of God fit our preconceived notions. But Matthew 16.28 cannot be interpreted without Matthew 16.27. Matthew 16.27 will simply not fit a date of 70 AD. There is no evidence that the Lord came back in 70 AD in the “glory of His Father, with the holy angels” and judged the nations. Therefore, Matthew 16.28 does not pertain to a 70 AD coming. Moreover, we have written evidence that John did see the coming of the Lord (96 AD) before John died.

What About John 21.18-24?

Verily, verily, I say unto thee, When thou wast young, thou girdedst thyself, and walkest whither thou wouldest: but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and carry thee whither thou wouldest not. But this speak he, signifying by what death he should glorify God. And when he had spoken this, he saith unto him, Follow me. Then Peter, turning about seeth the disciple whom Jesus loved following: which also leaned on his breast at supper, and said, Lord, which is he that betrayeth thee? Peter seeing him saith to Jesus, Lord, and what shall this man do? Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me. Then went this saying abroad among the brethren, that that disciple should not die: yet Jesus said not unto him, He shall not die; but, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? -John 21.18-24 KJV

Preterists believe that Jesus indicated by this that He would “come in judgment” in 70 AD. They base this upon the fact that John was certainly still alive in 70 AD and so the 70 AD must represent the “coming of the Lord”. But this is not the explanation that John gave nor is it the only explanation.

The disciples, according to John’s explanation, misunderstood Jesus to be saying that John would not die. From the sources that I have, the Gospel of John could have been written as late as 90 AD (which is 20 years after the destruction of Jerusalem). Others believe it was written earlier. If the Gospel was written 20 years after the destruction of Jerusalem, then it would hardly make sense for John to continue speaking of the story that he would remain until the coming of the Lord (in judgment of Jerusalem) if that had already occurred. This passage in John 21 has nothing to do with any “coming of the Lord in judgment in 70 AD”. John lived to such a ripe old age, according to historical reports, that many may have believed that he would indeed remain until the Lord returned. Certainly, the teaching of the imminent return of the Lord was taught in the first century. John wa still living and they were still looking.

Is It Right To Dismiss Many Old Testament Prophecies As Not Being Literal?

There is a dangerous tendency, in my opinion, among preterists to “spiritualize away” those prophecies that are inconvenient to them. They use (as noted) such phrases as “biblical imagery” to do away with the precise reality of prophetic passages. The apostles never resorted to the explanation of “biblical imagery” in their interpretation of prophecies. Matthew, for example, is very literal and generally precise in his interpretation of prophecies (e.g., the virgin birth means the virgin birth, Egypt means Egypt, a donkey means a donkey, and, even as we noted, if types and shadows are used, the context is a real event etc.). We don’t see such refuges as “biblical imagery” (generally speaking) in the biblical interpretation of prophecy in the apostles.

Is It Possible That The Euphrates River Could By Dried Up?

The “drying up of the Euphrates river” in Revelation 16.12, according to some preterists, does not mean that a river will actually be dried up, but it is “simply…biblical imagery”. No matter that civil engineers in this day and age have actually damned up rivers (and literally dried them up). No matter that this is actually happening today in biblical places like Iraq and Turkey, it is still just “biblical imagery”. The Bible does not mean what it says-when it is not convenient to someone’s doctrine. To my way of thinking, this is exactly what the amillennialists, such as the Campellites, have resorted to in order to refute the clear meaning of prophecies. Apostolics heretofore have never held this. One wonders, what else will preterists next decide to “spiritualize” away. Baptism? Speaking in tongues? Once the door to allegorization is open, there is no limit. I really believe this is what helped to ancient Catholic church to deny the baptism of the Holy Ghost.

They allegorized it to the point that when the priest laid his hand upon the supplicant, confirmation came and they were said to have received the Holy Ghost through the laying on of hands. Baptism in the Protestant church world simply became a “symbol” of what God had done inwardly. If you apply the liberal use of “allegory” to prophecy, then the next step is to apply it to salvation and living for God.

Nahum 1.4 states God “drieth up all the rivers”, but Larry Smith, in his Coming Of The Lord states, “Nahum wasn’t suggesting a physical fulfillment; he-just like Revelation-was simply using biblical imagery”. But anyone who has ever seen an extended drouth in the dry middle east could tell you very well that the rivers can indeed “dry up”. But, that aside, there is an important difference between Nahum 1.4 and Revelation 16.12. Revelation 16.12 mentions a specific river by name, which is much more than mere “biblical imagery”. Moreover, the geographical location of the Euphrates is significant, since it is on the advancing route of the armies of the “kings of the east”. An invading land army from the east would almost surely have to cross the Euphrates river on their way to Israel. Take a look at a map.

According to Larry Smith, the prophecies in Joel 2, Matthew 24, and Revelation 6 are all “biblical imagery” (p.10). How can one arrive at a clear understanding of biblical prophecy if much of it is just “biblical imagery”.

The apostle Peter does not hold this view that prophecy is only “biblical imagery” in his interpretation of Joel 2.

For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day. But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy: And I will show wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke: The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come. -Acts 2.15-20 KJV

Certainly, Peter is not affirming that the prophecies in Joel merely are “biblical imagery”, but are to be taken literally. Do you see my point when I say that eventually, as they apply allegorism to prophecy, they will then apply to salvational experience? The activity of the Holy Ghost is described in real, literal terms (prophesying, seeing visions, dreaming dreams). In fact, the audience was actually seeing and hearing the specific literal activity that Peter was describing from Joel’s prophecy. It is interesting at the beginning of the church age, Peter is describing a prophecy that is being partly fulfilled in front of their very eyes, and he adds the part concerning the sixth seal of Revelation 6, which has yet to be fulfilled. If the first part is literally fulfilled, then one would expect the second part to also be literally fulfilled. It has not yet been fulfilled. You will have to search assiduously through the New Testament to find an example of apostles using the “biblical imagery” approach. It is a dangerous approach to prophetic interpretation.

Paul’s Lone Use of Allegory

I note one example by Paul in Galatians 4. This is called allegory and is seen very rarely in the New Testament. It is the exception rather than the rule. This is the only example I can find. It is not sufficient to hang a whole system of prophetic interpretation on it, as Larry Smith and others have done. Paul is speaking of the mother of the church (“Jerusalem which is above”). The city of Jerusalem he sadly relates is (currently at that time) “in bondage with her children” (Gal. 4.25). But someday, according to prophecy, the city of Jerusalem will no longer be “in bondage with her children”.

Why, then, should we think that the rest of the prophecy is simply “biblical imagery” without any literal reality in Joel and in Acts 2? “Wonders in heaven above” are references to real astronomical phenomena (e.g., the sun turned into darkness-a good description of an eclipse; the moon turned into “blood”). These activities are represented by the sixth seal in Revelation 6, which announces the coming wrath of God. At the end of the entire church age (represented by the outpouring of the Holy Spirit at the beginning, which is the hallmark of this age), the endtime troubles begin in earnest.

Are we to understand that Peter announces the opening of the great church age, but then lets us know that it will be followed just 30 some years later by the “coming of the Lord in judgment” (70 AD), and that all of these “biblical imageries” in Isaiah, Joel, and Zechariah, etc., pertain to something that will happen only 30 some years later? The Lord is coming 30 years later? History tells us that the great apostle John lived some 31 years (died 101 AD) after the 70 AD destruction of the Temple-why did John write of such a momentous event as the coming of the Lord (in judgment), since this supposedly fulfilled the prophecies of Revelation? Irenaeus, who reportedly sat under a disciple of John’s reported that John wrote his prophecy in c.96 AD. Why are there no writings of apostolic authority explaining that the preterist interpretation of the book of Revelation was the correct interpretaton? There were apostles, as I noted, and their close companions, living after the momentous events of 70 AD.

Joel Used The Phrase “Nigh At Hand” For An Event Some 800 Years Later

Joel states, “the day of the Lord cometh, for it is nigh at hand” (Joel 2.1). This is even more troubling since the preterist accepts such a late fulfillment of this prophecy (800 years later after Joel wrote it, and not in Joel’s generation) while rejecting any later fulfillment of other similar prophecies, such as those in Matthew and Revelation.

How is it that the prophet Joel could use a phrase like “nigh at hand” to prophesy of something that some preterists believe did not actually take place until about 800 years later? How is it that “futurists” are incorrect in using such phrases as “the time is at hand”, “I come quickly”, “nigh at hand”, but it is okay for preterists to use such phrases for an event that won’t occur for some 800 years? You can’t say “nigh at hand” means one thing for Old Testament prophecies and another thing for New Testament prophecies like Revelation 1.3.

What is the difference between 800 years and 2000 years in God’s sight? I will tell you the truth: not much. One day with the Lord is as a thousand years. If it is permissible for Joel to use the phrase “nigh at hand” for an event that is hundreds of years in the future then it is likewise permissible for the apostle John to use the phrase “the time is at hand” (Revelation 1.3) for events that are still unfilfilled hundreds of years later.

The prophet Zephaniah (who prophesied 640-608 BC) also used the phrase “near” in his prophecy. He wrote, “The great day of the LORD is near, it is near, and hasteth greatly, even the voice of the day of the LORD: the mighty man shall cry there bitterly” (Zephaniah 1.14). How could both Joel and Zephaniah say the day of the Lord was “nigh” or “near” centuries ago, and it not come to pass in their generation? Do you suppose that the phrases “at hand”, “nigh”, “shortly come to pass”, might have a larger meaning in prophetic language? Perhaps preterists ought to take another look at these phrases, especially Revelation 1.3. Much of their argument for prophecy being fulfilled in the first century hinges upon their incorrect interpretation of such phrases as “at hand” and “this generation”, which they have re-interpreted to fit their scheme. Preterism Attempts To Relegate Endtime Prophecy To Old Testament Events

Using the prophecy in Isaiah 34, which is identified with Revelation 6 and Matthew 24, by similar use of key words, Brother Smith, in his Coming Of The Lord, etc. attempts to relegate this prophecy to “Isaiah’s prophecies about the defeat of two Old Testament cities, Idumea and Bozrah”. Idumea was not even a city, and is actually ancient Jordan, and Bozrah was a former capital city. That is how far-fetched such interpretations are (in the vein of the German higher criticism).

Isaiah 34.4, however, uses key terminology, and lets us know that this is an endtime prophecy, linked to Revelation 6 and Matthew 24 (the sixth seal).

We know from Isaiah 34.2 that these prophecies refer to more than just modern-day Jordan since Isaiah says, “For the indignation of the LORD is upon all nations, and his fury upon all armies…”. Moreover, we know that this is not some provincial prophecy to come to pass in Old Testament days, since Isaiah 34.8 says, “For it is the day of the Lord’s vengeance, and the year of recompences for the controversy of Zion”. This is not speaking of the Lord’s vengeance upon the Jews, but rather upon the heathen nations. That is a much larger judgment.

Not only does this prophecy involve “all nations, and his (the Lord’s) fury upon all armies”, but it clearly is related to other endtime prophecies pertaining to the end of the age. This is why Jesus in the synagogue at Nazareth did not quote all of Isaiah 61.2 in Luke 4.19, purposely leaving off “and the day of the vengeance of our God”. Jesus, at His first coming, only fulfilled part of Isaiah 61.2.

The period of the church age would intervene before the rest of the endtime events continued. That is why Jesus stopped at that point.

Revelation 6.12-14 gives a similar description:

And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood; And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind. And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places. -Revelation 6.12-14 KJV

The exact terminology is used in Isaiah 34.4 that is used in Revelation 6.13,14. Both of these passages point to the wrath of the Lord upon all nations in the end of the world. We also know from Jesus that the worldwide “wrath of the Lord” did not follow the 70 AD destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem (Luke 21.20-24), but that rather the dispersion of the Jews worldwide and the occupation of the city by the Gentiles came about in 70 AD rather followed the destruction of the Temple.

This prophecy above is much more widespread in its application than just Idumea and Bozrah. Idumea and Bozrah share in the judgments incorporated in this endtime event, but the event is much more widespread than just modern-day Jordan. It is an incorrect interpretation to attempt to dismiss these prophecies as merely Old Testament prophecies concerning Old Testament countries during that period of time. These are endtime prophecies associated with the sixth seal and key worldwide endtime elements.

Is The Book of Revelation “Nothing More Than Biblical Imagery That Describes God’s Destruction of Jerusalem”?

As anyone knows, who has studied the book of Revelation, it is far more than just “biblical imagery” which describes “the destruction of Jerusalem” in 70 AD (actually, the Temple was destroyed by fire, but the city iteself was not destroyed until 135 AD). A vast amount of endtime events, which could not possibly apply only to the destruction of Jerusalem, are described in detail in the book of Revelation. Any careful study of the great prophetic book will confirm this. We have mentioned some in this article.

Some Comments About The Importance of The Date of Revelation

The importance of the date of the book of Revelation is especially crucial to the theory of the preterists. Because if it cannot be shown that the book of Revelation was written before 70 AD, then the whole scheme of preterism, as many are putting it forth, falls to the ground and is shown to be utterly false.

Some preterists maintain that the book of Revelation actually refers to Nero as the then current “king” (or emperor) of Rome (Revelation 17.10). This is a tenuous identification, at best. There are a lot of variations in calculating the list of Roman kings (or emperors). For example, if Caesar himself is included as the first “king” (and certainly he held this stature, even though he technically was not crowned), then Nero would not be the fifth “king”, but would be the “sixth king” (Caesar, Augustus, Tiberius, Gaius (Caligula), Claudius, Nero). Then “five would be fallen” and Nero might be the one “who is”. But is he?

One of the problems with asserting that Nero is the king mentioned in Revelation 17.10 (“one is”) is the next verse. Moreover, there were three “rivals” following the suicide of Nero (Galba, Otho, Vitellius, 68,69 AD). Vespasian then ruled 69-79 AD, Titus 79-81 AD, and Domitian 81-96 AD.

The year 69 AD is sometimes called “the year of the three emperors”, because Galba, Otho, and Vitellius, all ruled for short periods during this year (Tacitus, in his Annals, covers this period fairly well). Galba, who was proclaimed emperor in June 68 upon the death of Nero, later quarreled with his ally, Otho. And Otho, with the help of the Praetorian guard, took the throne from Galba in January 69 AD. Otho was defeated by Vitellius in 69 AD, who reigned until he himself was defeated by General Vespasian, who took the throne December 22, 69 AD.

Thus, if we count Nero as the 6th emperor (“five are fallen, and one is”, Rev. 17.10), and of the “7 kings” mentioned by John, then Galba would be the seventh king, who must “continue a short space”. But the “eighth king”, then, following this pattern, would be “the beast that was, and is not”. This beast, if we follow this pattern so that we might identify Nero as “the sixth king” (“one is”), and thus establish the “early date” for the book of Revelation, would have to be “Otho”. Was Otho the beast? Not likely.

Marcus Salvius Otho (32-69 AD) had been a favorite of Nero, and he was the husband of Poppaea Sabina (d.65 AD). Poppaea became the mistress of Nero in 58 AD, after he sent Otho out of the country to govern Lusitania (Portugal), so as to make a “cuckold” out of him. Otho, in support of Galba, returned to Rome upon the death of Nero in June 68 AD, and followed Galba as emperor himself in January 69 AD, with the help of the Praetorian guard.

Are we to understand that this man Otho was the “beast” since he was indeed the “eighth king” (if you count Nero as the sixth)? If Otho was the beast, does he possess all of the qualities of the beast? Where are the historical evidences pertaining to this? If Galba did not succeed Nero, to be followed by Otho and Vitellius, then someone please show why this is historically incorrect?

If we were to somehow (deviously, I would think) discount Galba, Otho, and Vitellius (due to their short reigns), then the “seventh king” would be Vespasian (assuming we were still counting Julius Caesar as the first king). Some accept Galba as the “seventh king” (explaining that he had a short reign), they discount Otho and Vitellius, and make Vespasian the eighth king. It soon becomes evident that all attempts to use the Roman emperor’s list to satisfy Revelation 17.10,11, in order to make Nero the “king” reigning when John wrote Revelation, are doomed to confusion and failure. Nero’s persecution was basically confined to Rome and he certainly doesn’t “measure up” to the beast of Revelation or Daniel either. He was a “momma’s boy” and largely manipulated by others, including women. Granted he was evil and a psychopath. Many men have filled that bill.

Moreover, if Nero is said to be the “sixth king” (“five are fallen, and one is”, Rev. 17.10), then the “eighth king” must be the “beast”, and must be of “the seven”. He (“the eighth king”) is the same beast of Revelation 13 with the a deadly head wound. Of course, none of these things match any history that we have concerning these Roman emperors. We can see how arbitrary this all is. Is this better than the dispensationalist “date setters” and the “red heifer” crowd? I don’t think so. I reject the date setters and the “red heifer” sensationalism, but I cannot swallow this historical “doublespeak”, attempting to rewrite history to destroy prophecy or make it conform erroneously to history. It is confusion.

The conclusion must therefore be that the “seven kings” that John speaks about in Revelation 17 do not appear to have anything to do with the ancient Roman emperors (although Revelation 17.10,11 seems to speak of one “king” who “is” either reigning or living when John’s vision came to him, who, is, in some way, associated with the “eighth king”, who is “of the seven”). But we do not really know who these “seven kings” are. We do know that the “eighth king”, who is the “beast” stems from them. But like as in Daniel, the Little Horn stems from among a series of kings, but seems to arrive on the scene centuries later.

John also speaks of another “ten kings”, who will “receive power as kings one hour with the beast” (Rev. 17.12), and they “will make war with the Lamb” (Rev. 17.14). These ten kings seem to be identified in Scripture with the “ten toes” (iron mixed with clay) of Daniel 2, and we know that this would refer to a period of time subsequent to 1453 AD (that is, in modern times). This hardly harmonizes with the events of the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem in 70 AD. The Roman emperor (supposedly the instrument of judgment against the Jews) makes war “with the Lamb” with the help of ten other kings? Since we know from Daniel 2 that the 10 kings are most likely associated with the feet of clay mixed with iron (the last day Gentile empire which is smashed with the Stone “cut out without hands”, or Christ, in the very endtimes), we ought to consider that these seven kings could be interpreted as the empires of the Gentiles, and the “one” who “is” would merely represent the empire of Rome, which was the Gentile empire in existence at that time. But we do not know that for sure.

At least that is an alternative explanation that has more credibility than using the seven Roman emperors, and trying to identify one of them as the “beast” so as to put forward a first century endtime scheme.

Brother Smith (p.38) lists several theories concerning these kings. He says, “The fall of Jerusalem occurred, just as the Bible said it would, in the days of the ten kings of the Roman empire” (ibid). We will show, however, that the “ten kings” are associated with the future “the little horn” (the anti-christ) and they are associated with an empire subsequent to the first century Roman empire.

How do these interpreters arrive at the fall of Jerusalem occurring in the days of the ten kings? “The main school of thought”, says Brother Smith, “taught by most is that Nero Caesar was the sixth king, and Vespasian the 10th king, who was in power at the time of the destruction of Jerusalem” (ibid). It is obvious to the insightful reader, who has been following our discussion of the Roman emperors, that this is contrived by these interpreters.

There are a number of things to consider. For Nero to be considered “the sixth king”, then Julius Caesar has to be considered a king and he was never crowned (he refused the crown three times, it is reported). Instead he was assassinated before he could ascend a throne.

Many lists show the following: Augustus, Tiberius, Caligula, Claudius, Nero. Nero is listed as the “fifth king”. Galba, Otho, and Vitellius, would then be the sixth, seventh, and eighth, respectively, and Vespasian would be the ninth king. Besides all of this, the seven kings listed by Revelation 17 are in addition to the ten kings!

And so the statement by Brother Smith has no relevance at all. Moreover, Revelation 17 calls the “eighth king”, which arises out of “the seven kings”, the “beast”. While many of the Roman emperors (who all refused the title of “king”, by the way) were “beastly” in their behavior, which one of them could ever hope to qualify for the characteristics and the powers of the “beast” identified by Daniel and John? Explain to us how Vespasian, for example, can be identified as the “beast”? Did Vespasian have a “false prophet”, who could call fire down from heaven (Rev.13.14)? Not hardly. Vespasian’s reported character no where near matches the prophesied “character” or description of the beast.

Then Brother Smith goes on to say, “The other school of thought is that Nero was the seventh king and Pompey the first, which would make Vespasian the little horn of Daniel 7.8 who came up among the ten, before whom three were plucked up by the roots (Pulpit Commentary, vol. 13, p.225)” (p.38). These three kings, who were plucked up by the roots, Smith wants to make them to be: Galba, Otho, Vitellius (see our description of these men). But remember, the “ten kings” are separate from the eight kings of Revelation 17! Revelation 17.12 states, “And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings, which have received no kingdom as yet; but receive power as kings one hour with the beast”. This is how far-fetched such theories get.

The ten kings are not even part and parcel of the seven kings! They do not even have their power “as yet” when the angel spoke to John. Furthermore, these ten kings, when they get their power, will give their power to the eighth king (the beast). So think about this: they supposedly (following Brother Smith’s scheme) will give all their power in “one hour” to the eighth king (the beast), but we are to believe that they actually are part and parcel of the seven kings (Caesar, Augustus, Tiberius, Caligula, Claudius, Nero, and Galba). But three of the ten were supposedly already plucked up by the eighth (Vespasian), that being Galba, Otho, and Vitellius.

Anyone can see that these schemes are self-serving and they have no connection with reality. The truth of the matter is that there are seven kings, and the eighth king is the beast. There are also another ten kings (and it is three of these ten who are plucked up by the little horn, sometimes called “the beast” also). The “ten kings” will cooperate with the eighth king (the beast) and give their power to him in “one hour” when they attempt to make war against the Lamb (Christ). It has nothing to do with the first century, but occurs in a time subsequent to the Roman empire (during the time of the feet and the 10 toes of the image seen

in Daniel 2). The ten kings are only associated with the eighth king, which comes of the seven kings. The seven kings are not part of the 10 kings and this is where the preterist confusion here comes in.

After I sent my critique to Larry Smith, and he has seen that the Roman emperors will not fit, and so he has substituted the Roman procurators, who governed Judea and Jerusalem, “after the death of Herod Agrippa I”. Gessius Florus, Smith claims, had a short governorship during 65 AD, and, because of unrest and trouble there, Nero himself took direct control of Judea. Smith says, “This made Nero the eighth king” (p.67, The Coming Of The Lord). Nero reportedly then gave power to officials over ten districts within Palestine, and this would be the “ten kings” of Revelation 10!

Smith does not apparently even read Revelation 17. Revelation 17 clearly shows that these ten kings give “their power and strength unto the beast” (17.13). Are these petty officials in these ten districts of Palestine to give “their power and their authority” to Nero (if he is selected still to be the beast, since it seems that Smith has identified Nero as the “eighth king” (Revelation 17.11). Are these ten petty officials in Palestine to “make war with the Lamb” (Revelation 17.14)?

Moreover, these ten kings “hate the whore…and burn her with fire” (Revelation 17.16). Revelation 17.18 identify this woman as “that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth”. Are we to believe this woman is Jerusalem? Surely, no one is ready to maintain that the occupied city of Jerusalem, in the poor province of Judea, was at that time reigning over the kings of the earth? Moreover, it was not the ten petty officials of Palestine who assaulted and burned the Temple in 70 AD, but it was the army of the Roman general Titus. The cowardly Nero committed suicide in June of 68 AD, and so he missed being cast alive into the Lake of Fire according to Revelation 19.20.

Did The Son of Man Came In The Clouds of Glory In The Days of Vespasian?

Brother Smith concludes from this discussion that since the destruction of Jerusalem took place during the reign of Vespasian, that “This resulted in the Son of Man coming with the clouds to the Ancient of Days as is found in Daniel 7.13,14, and being given a kingdom and dominion that would not pass away or be destroyed” (p.38). See below as we give an explanation of the passage in Daniel 7. It could not possibly match anything like that happening in the first century. First of all, Jerusalem would have to have been the headquarters of Jesus Christ on earth since 70 AD, and the millennium would have been instituted.

That did not happen. All the nations of the world would be under the rule of Christ, His apostles, and the church. That did not happen. I realize that partial preterists use the argument that they still believe in a future second coming of Jesus at a later date, and that they see the 70 AD “coming” as an invisible coming of the Lord in “judgment”. But they use this manufactured “invisible coming of the Lord in judgment” as a lynchpin to commandeer many of the endtime prophetic events, which they connect with this so-called “invisible coming”. If they indeed believe in a future second coming, then they should admit that Matthew 24.29-31 ties this coming of the Lord in with the conclusion of the Great Tribulation period. The Bible says that “immediately after the tribulation” that the sign of the Son of man (will appear) in heaven (vs. 30). And so it is incorrect to substitute a made-up “invisible coming in judgment” at this point in Matthew 24. The coming that is immediately after the tribulation is the second coming that partial preterists admit is still future. This connection makes it impossible for the tribulation to have occurred in 66-70 AD.

The Date of The Apocalypse: External And Internal Evidence

There are, of course, arguments for and against the “early date” (66-68 AD) and the “late date” (96 AD) for the apocalyptic vision of John on the isle of Patmos.

The greatest external evidence is the early witness of the prominent Catholic bishop Irenaeus (130-202 AD) of Lyons, France. Irenaeus, in his Against Heresies (V.30.3) clearly states that the apostle John saw his vision on the isle of Patmos in c.96 AD during the reign of the emperor Domitian.

Irenaeus, in speaking of the difficulty in naming the Antichrist wrote:

We will not, however, incur the risk of pronouncing positively as to the name of Antichrist; for if it were necessary that his name should be distinctly revealed in this present time, it would have been announced by him who beheld the apocalyptic vision. For that was seen no very long time since, but almost in our day, towards the end of Domitian’s reign”. -Against Heresies (V.30.3)

There seems to be no confusion on the part of Irenaeus. He expresses no doubt at all as to the time of the “apocalyptic vision” nor as to the emperor’s name. Irenaeus claims to have come from Smyrna and to have sat under the ministry of Polycarp, who, in turn, had sat under the teaching of the apostle John. There should be no doubt as to the veracity of this statement, especially when we realize that no Catholic church father in ancient times questioned it for hundreds of years. Why should we think that this ancient bishop would like about a specific fact that others during his day could easily have refuted?

Brother Smith’s criticism of Irenaeus is not really valid when we realize that John 8.57 accurately relates an incorrect testimony from the Jews that Jesus was not yet “fifty years old”.

We know better, but we can forgive Irenaeus for this error, and that does not necessarily imply that Irenaeus was incorrect in what he said about the date of the apocalyptic vision of John. Irenaeus is a valuable witness since he reportedly sat under the bishop Polycarp, who himself had sat under the apostle John. It is very likely that much of John’s ministry and life was made known to Irenaeus through Polycarp. We understand that Irenaeus was wrong in his theology, but

we doubt that he would have made a mistake about something that was common knowledge among the ancients.

Robert Grant, and other scholars, believe that Irenaeus also had available to him, the five books of Papias (60-130 AD), called The Lord’s Gospel, or The Sayings of The Lord. Papias was a man who personally knew the apostle John and other disciples who had seen the Lord. In other words, Irenaeus knew what he was talking about. The event he was speaking about had occurred only some 80 years earlier. Eighty years ago, in our time, would be the year 1921. A comparative view of this would be something that the Pentecostal Pioneer Andrew Urshan had told Brother Nathaniel Urshan, who, in turn, told us. Would we give more stock to that than something said hundreds of years later by someone like Epiphanius of Salamis?

A number of ancient Catholic writers also confirmed the later date (96 AD) for the book of Revelation. Not all of them seemed to have just quoted from Irenaeus, since there were obviously other ancient sources (I just mentioned one probable source, Papias). There was Hippolytus of Rome (170-235 AD), Jerome (340-420 AD), his friend Orosius, and Eusebius (260-340 AD), who had numerous histories and sources at his disposal ,including the writings of the ancient apostolic church historian Hegesippus (120-185 AD), Victorinus (d. 303 AD), and Sulpicius Severus, to mention a few.

These all attested to the later date. We have no reason to believe that these ancient writers would purposely give an incorrect date.

Internal Evidence For The Later Date (96 AD)

There are a number of points of internal evidence in the book of Revelation that scholars have pointed out:

The term “the Lord’s day” (Rev. 1.10) was not seen in the earlier decades (e.g., 60’s), but rather another expression such as the “first day of the week” was used. However, it is admitted that the expression “the day of the Lord” also has a solid backgrround of use by the Old Testament prophets, where it refers to the coming millennium and the events precipitating that.

Gnosticism was still in its infancy during the 60’s. Paul only alluded to it (1 Timothy 6.20), but the book of Revelation shows already developed gnostic sects -groups such as the Nicolaitans and the Balaamities. This indicates a later date of writing. By the end of the first century Gnostics were actually “mutilating” the scriptures, and thus we see the warning in Rev. 22.18,19.

This was not the case in the 60’s when the apostle Paul barely mentioned “gnosis” in 1 Timothy. Paul does mention an epistle that was not from his own writing and warned them about that. Problems in the seven churches of Asia minor were too developed for the earlier date: Ephesus had lost its first love, there was a synagogue of Satan in Smyrna, in Pergamos the Nicolaitans and the Balaamites were prevalent, Thyratira had a Jezebel, Sardis had only a few names left which not defiled their “garments”, and Laodicea had become so lukewarm and offensive that Christ threatened to spew it out of His mouth.

These things had not had time in the day of Paul’s epistles to develop in Ephesus and in Laodicea. It is very doubtful that they would have developed this far in the first generation churches as soon as the 60’s. Thus a later date (96 AD) makes much more sense. Paul makes no such reference to any of these problems in his epistles written earlier. Phillip Schaff believed that the apostle John was not even resident in Ephesus until near the close of the Nero’s life. The churches in Asia minor had been largely planted by the apostle Paul. It was probably not until after the death of the apostle

Paul in Rome in about 67 AD that John took the guidance of the Asia minor churches. Paul makes no mention of John (except for the reference to John being at a Jerusalem conference in circa 55,56 AD or before, in the epistle to the Galatians).

There is an ancient story about John in Clement of Alexandra which relates that John was a very old man when he returned from the island of Patmos, but was still able to ride a horse to the lair of a robber who was a Christian backslider so that he might reclaim the young man to Christ. If John were a teenager when Jesus called him c.30 AD, then he was as old as 81 when he returned from Patmos, but he would have only been about 50 in 65 AD-hardly an “old man”. Nero’s “modus operandi” was to put to death Christians (e.g., Peter and Paul at Rome), while Domitian used the punishment of exile. Thus it is more likely that John’s exile indicates that it was in the time of Domitian (96 AD).

In view of these things, and in view of the fact that preterists cannot show that John wrote Revelation as mainly a prophecy of the destruction of Jerusalem, we ought to reject the preterist viewpoint concerning the book of Revelation. Moreover, the composition of the Gospel of John cannot be shown to have been written earlier than 80 AD-90 AD, according to learned scholars, such as Rudolf Bultmann, in his commentary on The Gospel of John. Preterists will ask that if John wrote his Gospel in 80 AD, for example, how is it that he said nothing about the destruction of the Temple in 70 AD? Could it be that there were other reasons for not making reference to the destruction of the Temple? It is not conclusive to state simply that the absence of any references to the destruction of the Temple in the New Testament canon proves that these works were written prior to 70 AD. That is an argument from silence. Both Scripture and history prove preterism to be false. It is a very serious deception.

KINGDOM LIBERATION 1 (#048)

The price of freedom is often war. If an alien force occupies a land and will not relinquish control to the true government of the land, the people of the land will not be set free until the enemy forces are defeated and forced to release the land and its captives.

As a young boy I can clearly remember seeing newsreel films of the liberation of prisoners of war from concentration camps during World War II. I remember the pitiful, starved, skin-and-bone bodies of the men who had survived the ordeal and managed to stay alive long enough to be set free. Those who had any strength left had large smiles upon their bony faces as they embraced their liberators with great joy. Others were too far gone, too near death to get up and could barely manage a smile of gratitude. Many others were already dead from starvation and disease. The liberation had come too late for them.

Everyone wept and jumped for joy. It seemed to me the whole United States of America was weeping either for their pain and loss or for the great joy of seeing husbands, sons, and fathers set free from cruel bondage. When the war was finally over, there was great rejoicing with dancing, singing, shouting and jumping up and down for joy. Everyone wanted to hug someone, anyone. Yet, many moms went to their private place and wept for the sons that would never come home. Widows bitterly wept for a season and then usually were married again. However, the moms could never fill the empty place created by the loss of their son. They could only find solace in the fact that their sons had died for a good cause, the cause of freedom.

God gave His Son for the same cause, our freedom. Jesus died for our freedom from all the cruel bondage’s of the enemy, freedom to live in abundance of righteousness, peace, and joy. He purchased our freedom to live eternally with God forever delivered from the pain of being separated from Him by our sin. Jesus endured the cross to purchase our freedom to come into God’s presence to fully know His love that can overcome all evil in the world. Through Christ we have freedom to overcome fear, remorse, hate, anger, rage, greed, lust, and every evil that would beset us. We have freedom to experience the beauties of holiness and the lack of the frustration in our daily lives caused by evil. In Christ we have freedom to live in peace no matter what our circumstances and freedom to die to our old self life in order that Christ might fully live within us to do all He desires with our lives on earth.

The Blessings of the Lord drives out the enemy
.

The presence of the Spirit of the Lord brings powerful love that drives out the enemy and destroys bondage’s. Christ Jesus has fully redeemed us from the curse and set us free. The primary work in assisting others in getting free from bondage’s is to assist them into the presence of the pure love of Jesus. Our warfare for them is from a place of rest in the victory already provided by Christ Jesus. Our primary focus is on the blessings of Christ Jesus and not the work of the enemy. There are individual cases where the Lord would have us to speak to the enemy strongholds in power.

Not every case requires specific attention. Where God is not speaking or showing us to speak deliverance we need not speak against the enemy or the stronghold. We should see and hear what God is doing and follow His leading. Most people will be set free in the presence of God by the blessings of Christ in Spirit led worship, prayer, and preaching of the Word in the Holy Spirit.

Yet, there still are many held in the cruel bondage of the enemy. They live in evil bondage’s of drugs, immorality, sexual perversions, pornography, alcohol, money, carnal pleasure-seeking, evil carousing, strife, hatred, fear, jealousy, insecurity, inferiority, gambling, pride, arrogance, religion, religious sects, cults, occult torments, blood lust, and demonic bondage of every sort. It is too late for many mothers’ sons and daughters who are already dead from their evil bondage. There is no consolation for their loss. Their children did not die for a good cause. They did not die for freedom; they died from the lack of freedom.

The Body of Christ is changing from a defensive mode to an offensive mode.

The victory is already won at the cross and now the resurrected Christ by the Holy Spirit is rising up within believers set free by the power and Spirit of God. Christ in His people is attacking the strongholds of the enemy setting the captives free. There is a new generation of children born of parents who are set free. These children will walk in a greater level of spiritual power. The power and potential of God is coming forth on earth in the purified children of God to destroy every stronghold of the enemy and set every captive free. The revivals of the past will seem small compared to demonstrations of spiritual power brought forth by the Spirit of Christ through a new generation of spiritual children with holy angels working with them.

Strongholds of the enemy must be destroyed on an individual basis. Strongholds are holds that the enemy has on individuals. They are primarily in the soul (the mind, will, and the emotions) of a person. A network of evil beliefs has grown into a stronghold from seeds of ideas planted in the soul. The stronghold enforced by evil spirits controls the person’s soul. The spirits first entice the person and then hook them into addictions and patterns of destructive behavior. The network is a tangle of lies that allows the powers of darkness to torment the soul and blind the spiritual eyes to truth. Those in bondage are prisoners of a spiritual war that most of the past generations of Christians did not even know was going on. In the past, the church did not show up for the war and the enemy won by default. Multitudes of precious lives have been wasted and many are held in bondage.

The weapons of our warfare are spiritual and must be fought in the spiritual realm and from a perspective of victory in Jesus.

2 Cor 10:3-5: For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.

Eph 6:12: For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.

All that we need to attack and destroy strongholds of the enemy is in the Spirit of Christ and His words. The weapons of our warfare are spiritual prayer, speaking the words of God, praise, worship, and thanksgiving unto God. The joy of the Lord is our strength. Faith activates the power of the Word of God to destroy lies and establish truth. The all-powerful love of God flowing through the Spirit of Christ within the believer and out to those in need is the power of God to destroy the work of the enemy and tear down networks of lies, thoughts and beliefs planted by the enemy. The work of the Spirit destroys the yoke of bondage. The truth of the gospel of the kingdom of God brings abundant life and freedom.

The Lord does not use any one particular formula for destroying strongholds and setting His people free from the enemy’s bondage’s. Jesus healed and brought deliverance in different ways. He continues today to work through believers to heal and deliver in different ways. God’s Spirit uniquely ministers to different needs of different personalities who have different mixtures and degrees of wounds and bondage’s. In the past ministers unskilled in hearing and moving with the Holy Spirit often used a “shotgun” type of approach. In general they used a formula-type approach toward binding and casting out evil spirits. Formula prayers designed to hit a broad spectrum of possible needs were blasted out in the hope that some would hit the target. In some instances, additional wounds were caused by the portions of the blast that missed the mark and instead hit the person or others who were close to the person. The Holy Spirit is a much better marksman. Like a skilled surgeon, He can carefully discern the need, removes that which needs removing, and heals that which needs healing, without creating additional damage.

The Holy Spirit knows the type and level of ministry required in each situation. God does not send a bulldozer to remove a splinter from the finger. Nor does He send a pair of tweezers to move tons of dirt. People’s needs for healing and deliverance are extremely varied. They range from the demon-controlled serial murderer and the drug-addicted Satan worshiper to the naive, young Christian who has been painfully rejected or who made a regrettable wrong choice. God loves them all and Jesus is the answer for them all. The method and the degree of ministry God will use are as varied as the persons and their needs.

In recent church history, there has been such a focus on being born again in order to go to heaven when one dies, that the powerful ministry of Jesus to heal the brokenhearted and set the captives free in this present life has been largely ignored. God is in the business of redeeming mankind’s spirit, soul, and body. One’s spirit is made alive, made a new creation, in an instant upon receiving the redemption of Christ by the Holy Spirit. The soul (mind, will, and emotions) is being saved by the process of the resurrected Christ by the Holy Spirit and the renewing of one’s mind.

One’s mind must be renewed, old patterns torn down, and new patterns established that conform to the words and ways of God. One’s self-will must be broken and conformed to the will of God and emotions healed by the Spirit of Christ. The process of salvation of one’s soul follows the instantaneous rebirth of one’s spirit. Healing for the body will often follow the salvation of one’s mind, will, and emotions.

1 Th 5:23-24: Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming (or presence) of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who calls you is faithful, who also will do it.

Rom 12:2: And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

Eph 4:22-23: That you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of your mind.

Heb 8:10b: I will put My laws in their mind and write them on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.

1 Th 5:24: He who calls you is faithful, who also will do it.

What God tells us to do He will empower us to do by the power of His Spirit within us.

Phil 2:13: For it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.

Eph 3:16-20: That He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man, that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height; to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us.

Luke 24:49: Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.

Assisting others to be healed and set free.

Power from on high indwelling the believer is the source of deliverance and healing first for one’s self and then in assistance to others. The power of the indwelling, resurrected Christ is more than enough to break every addiction, all bondage, every evil habit, and to drive off every evil spirit. No stronghold can stand in the face of the empowerment of the Spirit of God released in prayer by faith in God. God’s grace has provided unlimited power from heaven to restore, renew, heal, and deliver.

The Spirit of God can enable us to see below the surface of evil and destructive behavior to the root causes. He can also enable us to deal with the causes through specific prayer and speaking to the condition. Only in the anointing of the Spirit of God will these words be empowered and fruitful in one’s life. There are many conditions common to many people and methods of speaking to the conditions. As the anointing of the presence of God is present to minister, one may receive healing and deliverance by knowing how to speak to some of these conditions common to many.

True repentance is always the first step toward complete healing and deliverance. It does not matter what the root causes were, what environmental conditions may have been a factor, or what kind of genes, family-line tendencies, or curses are passed down to the individual. The reality of the whole matter is that God gave His only Son for the redemption of mankind. He has by His mercy and grace provided in Jesus Christ all that is needed for one’s complete victory over all evil and every sinful condition. The only reason one remains in sin is one’s own choice.

John 15:22: “If I had not come and spoken to them, they would have no sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin.

Imagine with me for a moment. If Jesus had not come and did all that He did, said all that He said and returned to earth in the Holy Spirit to do all that He does, and if He had not given us His Word, then one’s excuses would be valid. One could reasonably say the devil caused me to do it, or family-line genetics and predisposition toward sin coming from my family line made me like I am, or that the environment I grew up in caused me to be this way and I cannot help it. True, all these things may have caused us to be bent toward sin and evil. However, because Christ came and redeemed mankind with His own life, because He ever lives to intercede for us, and because He indwells believers to empower and bring about His righteous obedience within us, WE HAVE NO EXCUSE.

The real factor is neither how much one has sinned nor what the causes were. The real factor is: WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH JESUS CHRIST? Have you sought Him with your whole heart? Have you met Him at the cross and received forgiveness of sin by His blood? Have you received Him by the Holy Spirit into your heart and life? Have you made Him the LORD of your life? Have you sought His presence in the Holy Spirit? Have you sought Him in His Word? Have you repented for your sin and for not doing all these things?

Dealing with Common Root Conditions That Cause Bondage

Repentance means a turning about, a turning from our “self-walk” to a walk toward God. It means beginning to seek God with our whole heart. It means seeking the Kingdom of God and His righteousness first above all else in life. After true repentance is in place, we can begin to deal with some of the root conditions of need for healing and deliverance that are common to many people.

Two of these common root conditions are discussed in previous Kingdom Growth Guides #022 BEYOND REPENTANCE and #023 FORGIVENESS AND BEYOND. These guides deal with forgiveness, healing wounds of the heart, and binding and loosing. It would be a good idea to review these and be certain that these works are in place before going on to the consideration of other root conditions that are common to many people.

As ministers and warriors in the kingdom of God, we are to offensively attack the enemy and his work in others. The strongholds of the enemy must be destroyed, from the root conditions to the perverted behavior they have caused. The spirits of darkness and negative character qualities must be directly addressed and destroyed or removed.

Areas of bondage may exist within a person even after true repentance. A part of renewing one’s mind is to drive the enemy away, close any openings that may allow his return, and renew the patterns of thought and life. The anointed words spoken in prayer, in agreement with the Word and ways of God, can drive the enemy away, close all openings, and destroy wrong thought patterns. The Word and ways of God must be implanted into the life by the Spirit of Christ.

Disobedience and Iniquity of the Fathers

Two additional openings or root causes are disobedience and iniquity of the fathers. In addition to our own disobedience, there is much scripture to indicate that the children were often affected by the disobedience of their fathers. Though the sins of the fathers are the responsibility of the fathers only, the curse of the iniquity (tendency to sin) of the forefathers is passed on through the generations. We saw in the Heart-Trees and the Babylonian Family Pattern how children are affected by the iniquity of their forefathers. (See PART 2 Kingdom Growth Guides) This curse can especially be a problem when there is some history of blatant sin and/or demonic activity in one’s forefathers.

Deuteronomy 28:45-46: Moreover all these curses shall come upon you and pursue and overtake you, until you are destroyed, because you did not obey the voice of the Lord your God, to keep His commandments and His statutes which He commanded you.

Exodus 34:7: …keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children’s children to the third and the fourth generation.

Lamentations 5:7: Our fathers sinned and are no more, but we bear their iniquities.

Numbers 14:33: And your sons shall be shepherds in the wilderness forty years, and bear the brunt of your infidelity, until your carcasses are consumed in the wilderness.

Isaiah 14:21: “Prepare slaughter for his children because of the iniquity of their fathers, lest they rise up and possess the land, and fill the face of the world with cities.”

Nehemiah 9:2: Then those of Israelite lineage separated themselves from all foreigners; and they stood and confessed their sins and the iniquities of their fathers.

Pray With Me

Heavenly Father, I repent of all disobedience in my life. And I repent for the iniquity of my forefathers that is in any way affecting my life.

In the name of Jesus, I sever all affects of the iniquity of my forefathers from my life and say they no longer have any effect on my life. I say it is done. This curse is severed in Jesus’ name.

Satan and all powers of darkness, I command you, in the name of Jesus, this curse and all effects of the sins of my forefathers are severed from my life. You may never use them again to bring stress of any form to my life.

Thank You, Father, for the severance of this curse from my life. Thank You, Jesus, for freedom and liberty. Amen.

Honoring God above all – Even our family and church.
By Russ Welch

Hophni and Phinehas were sons of Eli, the high priest, and were priests themselves. However, they were wicked. When Israelites came to offer sacrifices at the tabernacle, Hophni and Phinehas forcibly took the flesh of the sacrificial animals before the fat portions had been burned on the altar. They also took some of the flesh that the offerer was boiling for the sacrificial meal (1 Samuel 2:12–17). These were serious transgressions of God’s laws, equivalent to robbing God. Eli’s sons also committed the extremely serious sin of seducing women who assembled at the door of the tabernacle (1 Samuel 2:22).

When we read this story we see two main things that stand out:

#1 The son’s of Eli honored themselves and their position above the Lord.

#2. Eli honored his son’s above the Lord and His commands.

Some may read this and think “I am glad I am not like Eli or his son’s” But let us ask this question – Are we? What about when our children outwardly do that which is contrary to the teachings of the Lord. Do we respond with, well they just aren’t matured yet. Or they’ve had a rough life so give them some grace.

Do we honor the Lord and bring correct, holy discipline into their lives?

Or how about, well they’ve been hurt by the church. All these things are honoring them and their actions above that which the Lord declares, we offer up justification prayers rather than Holy prayers asking our Father in Heaven to have His will invade their lives regardless of the cost. Otherwise we are honoring our children or possibly a family member above the Lord.

In reality Eli and his son’s honored their own desire and even their positions in ministry above the Lord God!

We must as well ask the question in regard to the church we attend or shepherd – Do we see things that are contrary to the Will of the Father yet we justify them because we love them so much? Guess what – In reality we are honoring the church above the Lord.

We go on to read in this Biblical account of how because of Eli’s refusal to deal with this situation according to the will of the Lord, the Lord brings Samuel into the picture, a man who honored the Lord above all. Has the Lord brought a Samuel into your life?

I see how many today will honor a church or a shepherd or even their own ministry position above the Lord. I myself have been guilty of this very thing and the Lord has had to correct me as well as rebuke on this. Even in regard to my own understanding of the church – Holy Ghost has brought conviction into my life.

Now, there are churches and ministries today that do honor the Lord, who teach His Word in purity and truth.

As well, there are many churches and ministries out there that are doing things that simply do not weigh up to what the Lord desires and so many will put the church and their doctrines above the Lord’s Word.

In America we have a multitude of churches to choose from, some may appear to be vacant of what we personally are looking for, and they may not have the worship style that we believe should be heard in this day.

They may have pews or stain glassed window. While others have the type worship that sends thrill up our spine, they may have comfortable chairs and all the modern technological gadgets.

Maybe their speaker is very charismatic in his delivery of the message whereas the other churches pastor is often times dry. The question is – which church is holding to the doctrines of Christ, teaching God’s Word with reverence and in purity, whereas the other church steps outside the bounds of holiness and is more into performance than truth, a center for entertainment and feeding selfish ambitions, watering down the Word because its about the numbers and the applause of men..

Do we choose a church because we want our children entertained or do we want them taught the Word of God?

Do we want to part of the in group or do we want to part of remnant?

Many today chose a church based on its popularity, in such a case very few would be attending the church that Jesus would be shepherding or that of the apostle Paul if they were to start a church in our City for theirs would surely not be a message that made everyone feel good, in fact theirs would be one that would bring conviction and challenge each of us up to a higher level of honoring the Lord God. It surely wouldn’t allow the detestable life styles to continue that many do because of the leaders fears of losing financial support.

I can guarantee divorce would not be dealt with the way it is in today’s modern church – You surely wouldn’t having leaders prophesying to a man who is set divorced that God is bring him a new wife!

Does our life style, choice of profession, the house and neighborhood we have chosen to live in, school our children attend, cars we drive really honor the Lord, or do these things honor our own desires above the Will of God for our lives?

Here is a tough question – Do we honor the Lord in the way that treat our parents – or because they are an inconvenience do we stick them in an old folks home so that we can live our lives with greater freedom and ease?

What does the Word of God command of us:

“So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything to the glory of God”. (1 Cor 10:31)

Wow, this verse is all inclusive to every area of our lives for it states in big bold letters “Whatever you do”

Do we honor the Lord above all in the matters of family affairs, the way we treat and discipline our children, our wives and even our neighbors leave alone the strangers and those we work with.

Do we honor the Lord in our business practices or do we cheat people to get ahead in the game of life – In reality to the Lord, for to Him our life is anything but a game.

Colossians 3:17 declares “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him”.

1 Peter 4:11 declares “If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen”.

So the question today brothers and sisters is – Do we really honor the Lord above all. Are our lives so radically sold out to Him that nothing even comes close too or can compare with our hearts desire to Honor God above all.

If not, are we radical enough to ask Holy Ghost to come into our lives, point out everything that does not honor the Lord, every idol that is set up above the Lord and take it to the alter of the Lord that His Holy Fire can consume it.

For we must remember that we serve a Radical King, who is radically in love with us and will stop at nothing until He gets our whole heart and life. For indeed we serve a righteous and Holy God who calls His children to come out from amongst the heathen, to be separated from the ways of the World and to Honor Him above any and everything else.

Are you up for the challenge – If so invite Holy Ghost into the most private area of your life today – the very center of your hearts desire and ask Him to bring forth the Will of God into your life not matter the cost!!!!!

For His Word shouts out at us “”The Lord says, Those who honor Me I will honor.”–1 Sam. 2:30

Absorbing offense
By Russ Welch

“The power of the cross can absorb every offense thrown at us!!

I was praying about offense and why so many Christians get offended – The Spirit began to download some powerful insight.

When we take ownership of something, we open ourselves up to offense i.e. ministry titles and such. Yet when we surrender all to the Lord, having laid it at His alter we relinquish ownership and it now belongs to Him. He is now the defender of it, and we are free from the strings of ownership.

Then the Spirit began to deal with the questions of doctrines and why so many people get hung up on them. Many of the doctrines in the church today are those of men and like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole they simply do not fit on the foundations of Christ’s doctrines thus they cause much unrest and confusion. For He being the Chief cornerstone has the ultimate say on what can be laid upon the foundation and what cannot be laid there – that which does not belong to Him shall be shaken and removed – we have seen this in many of the denominations over the decades, doctrines that at one time were pure became defiled and the Spirit began a shaken process to lose them from the foundation of the Ecclesia.

Over the centuries this has caused great conflict, confusion and even denominations splits – His true House shall not be divided – thus when we see splits it is caused by a inner conflict of error often times because of the pride and stubbornness of men refusing to take the case before the Lord and allow Holy Ghost to rule on the situation.

Today we have groups opposed to correction, rebuke and many false doctrines being passed off as true Kingdom principals such as the doctrine of “covering” and “spiritual father” – both have a foundation of truth yet when man’s opinions are intermingled it is like adding leaven to the loaf of truth, it become defiled.

We must be a people led of the Spirit – this is a foundational truth for every believer – we must test all things and we must be willing to cry foul when something other than the Truth rises up. We as well must open ourselves up to being willing to be corrected, rebuked and taught – seeking the Spirits counsel in all matter for He can nut led us to the ultimate truth which is Christ our Lord.

Are we radical enough to expose ourselves to such methods – are we radical enough to trust Holy Ghost to guard over us – are we radical enough to open our lives up to and being willing to be corrected –  these are the questions we must ask ourselves and ask Holy Ghost to search our hearts to seek out any and all leaven that it may be removed so that we can be both a blessing and a benefit to the Bride at large.

Remember – We serve a Radical King we expects a radical obedience and sacrifice from His disciples and thing less will not go unchecked – for He will even shake our own personal lives till every spec of religious dust and carnality is removed.

So, when we feel that rush of offense rising up in us – let it be a heart check to see whether we have surrendered that which belongs to the Lord (our rights) or are we prideful in holding onto that which belongs not to us!!!

Study and be eager and do your utmost to present yourself to God approved (tested by trial), a workman who has no cause to be ashamed, correctly analyzing and accurately dividing [rightly handling and skillfully teaching] the Word of Truth. ( 2 Tim 2:15)

We live in the era of great technological advancements, with a wealth of different scriptural views out there it is ever so easy to be swayed from one doctrine to another simply by the mastery of the writer. We are bombarded with different opinions that if our foundation is week we can fall for that which is not of the Lord.

So many depend upon the study of others and blindly trust what they teach and write with never taking to the One who has been sent of the Father to guide in all Spiritual truths. Yet we are the ones ultimately responsible for that which we believe and adhere too.

The King James translates that as “study.” However, modern translations typically do not agree because the meaning and usage of this English word has changed. To us, study means “hit the books,” “learn,” “analyze, investigate, examine, scrutinize,” or “earnestly contemplate.” But the Greek word means something quite a bit different. It literally means to “make speed,” “to hurry.” It conveys the sense of “to make earnest effort; be prompt to labor.”

In almost all modern translations, “study” is rendered “be diligent,” “work hard,” or “do your best.”

The primary question, then, is, “What can we do to show ourselves approved by God?” because God’s charge is, “Hurry to do it! Be quick about it! Be diligent at it. Do your best.”

As well shepherd/teachers are held at a higher responsibility of the Lord to teaching the truth – This means as teachers we are held accountable for what we teach. Many such persons today are swayed by emotions with the desire for unity out-weighing the commands of the Lord to bring correction and rebuke when the Spirit call’s for it.

But again, as individual’s we must guard our hearts that we be not fooled and led astray by a false doctrine. Proverbs 4: 23 state’s this plainly:

“Guard your heart more than anything else, because the source of your life flows from it’.

Many today in their zealousness to see the signs, wonders and miracles of the Lord have been swayed by false teachings which are not of the Lord, chasing after strange fires. Via the internet and media we have inundated with what appears to be of the Lord, yet in truth grieves the Holy Ghost for it is but the promotion of what man can do and people are been worshiping men and ministries rather than the Lord God Himself.

I myself fell into such deception and for several years wondered around in this wilderness of strange fires. I praise God for Holy Ghost never relented in His sending up red flags and with such there was always a sense of unrest. For where the Lord is being mocked the Spirit will not rest.

More and more Holy Ghost drew me to the Word and as I began to weigh the things I saw happening in the “ministry” to the Word of God and allowed Holy Ghost to bring forth truth and revelation the doorway to what was of God began to open.

Today I still believe in signs, wonders and miracles – yet I do not either chase after them or worship them. I can but look out side at nature itself and see the Glory of the Lord – I can look at a new born child and see the wonder of God.

Have I seen or experienced miracles?

Yes I have and I know that we serve the same God of the Old and New Testament who can show up as He did in the Bible, the same God who parted the Red sea, Who can raise the dead and heal the leper. Yet again, I choose not to worship the signs, rather I choose to worship He from whom the signs come from.

I pray daily for discernment that I be not fooled by false signs, wonders and miracles and I believe that if we truly allow Holy Ghost to lead our lives and keep our eyes on the Lord we shall not be fooled. For the Word proclaims:

“For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform signs and miracles to deceive the elect–if that were possible”. (Mark 134:22)

Notice the Lord says “if that were possible”. Is it possible? Yes it is if we leave it upon our own wisdom and ability to distinguish between what is true and what is false – yet if we are led of the Spirit we shall never be fooled.

Brother and sisters let us walk with Spiritual eyes open, being ever led of the Spirit of the Lord God Almighty, that we not be counted among those who have been led astray having falling for a false gospel being deceived by the light of a false and strange fire.

We are in a day that calls for radical disciples, equipped with Holy Ghost vision, empowered to bring down the walls of deception with the authority of their King, Jesus the Christ, to not only quench the fiery darts of the enemy but to also thru the power of His Spirit put out the strange fires built in the camp of the saints.

For we serve an Awesome and loving Father, who desires the very best for His children and longs to see the Bride break forth in the power of His Authority that He may release His Glory thru them for the world to see.

In this Interpretation I will attempt to clarify some of the workings of the anointing of God as well as the distinction between being drawn by the Father and being drawn by the Father and then making the conscience choice to abide in Jesus (John 15:4). I will also offer information on how the choice to abide in Jesus (or not) does not affect the drawing process of God or the power of God in the life of the believer (Isaiah 45:7). In an effort to bring wisdom I will further clarify how it becomes the believer’s choice whether to abide in Jesus or to misuse the anointing of God for selfish purposes. I do this to clarify how we might one day learn to prosper within God’s anointing. We can only do this by obeying God the Father’s will which is to abide in His Son Jesus Christ.

It is God the Fathers desire to anoint men for His purpose so that the power of the Holy Ghost can draw men unto Himself (John 6:44). It is the power of the Holy Ghost, and not any tactics from man, that saves the soul (Matthew 16:13-18).

Many people right now are seeking God through His anointing because in their minds the anointing seems to be the focus. They are seeking the power of God but the question is are they seeking God’s will for their lives? I will begin laying a foundation for this interpretation by explaining it is the process of sanctification (abiding in Jesus), and not the process of seeking God’s anointing, that God seeks to honor in the life of the believer (Matthew 7:16, 20, 1 Thessalonians 4:3).

Sanctification

2 Timothy 2:20-21

But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour. If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master’s use, and prepared unto every good work.

1 Thessalonians 4:3-4

For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you should abstain from sexual immorality; that each of you should know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor

If sanctification is wholly completed upon our confession of Christ, and no more sanctifying work needs to be done in us, then why would God scripturally admonish (in the present tense) to walk in sanctification and honor? The answer is simple. Sanctification power comes upon us at salvation but once it is given we must continually walk in it. The fact is, once we get saved and filled with the Holy Ghost, we as Christians still have plenty of wood and earth hidden deep within our hearts. It is our job to confess and repent and to seek God in sanctification so that we, by the power of the Holy Ghost, can become cleansed and meet for the master’s good use (Romans 6, 7). The process of walking in the Spirit and casting off the flesh (abiding in Jesus) is a sanctifying process…which Christians now have access to because Christians are now in Christ. If we choose not to seek God through this sanctifying process after we get saved, then we choose to abide off the vine (John 15:1-8), and thus… imperfections will remain.

1 Corinthians 3:12-17

Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is. If any man’s work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire. Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.

This specific verse above is referring mostly to the work that ministers will accomplish in the life of the believer but its wisdom is universal; especially when aligning it with 2 timothy 2:20-21. We must abide in Jesus in an effort to purge ourselves of these fleshly affections within our members (Revelation 3:18, Romans 6, 7, Galatians 5:24). Gold and silver and precious stones will withstand the fire… but the wood, hay and stubble will be consumed. These verses demonstrate that even though we are in Christ, we have plenty of work to do beyond salvation. The Bible says to work out our own salvation with fear and trembling (Philippians 2:12). Not to work for but to work out. Workouts are tough. They make you sweat… but workouts also whip you into shape. God wants to spiritually whip us into shape by having us walk in the Spirit so we do not fulfill the lusts of the flesh.

Galatians 5:22-25

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

We eventually gain the fruits of the Spirit when we crucify the flesh (through a process, we allow the Holy Ghost to burn up the wood, hay and stubble on earth). Please explain to me how any physical fruit is begotten separate from a process. It’s impossible. In order for fruit to bloom, a process is required… and also changes in seasons. Spiritual fruit in the life of the believer is no different at all; it is begotten through a process as well as changes in seasons. This is the sanctification process in us and it is hard work to say the least (Romans 7:14-25, Hebrews 12:11), but nonetheless, it is what is necessary in order for us to gain Christ like character (spiritual fruit). Once we have settled into a habitual attitude of crucifying the flesh, then the fruits of the Spirit (equivalent to the gold, silver, and precious stones/vessel of honor/good tree) will become apparent. Over time, as we learn to abide in Christ more fully (John 15:1-8), these fruits will become more consistently manifest in our lives during our fiery seasons.

The above explanation of sanctification is what God is seeking to do in His people. God wants us to build Christ like character but this is only done when we abide in Christ and thus crucify the flesh and attempt to walk in the Spirit. The consistent and mature way for a Christian to abide in Christ and walk in the Spirit is to obey the Bible and to obey the leading of the Holy Ghost (the Holy Ghost bearing witness of Jesus – John 16:13-14, 14:26), but for this interpretations purpose, and for edification… I am going to reveal how God will sometimes allow intensity in our lives, even above and beyond our biblical obedience, in order to force us to walk in the Spirit (Hebrews 12:3-11).

When we walk in the Spirit, we are immediately buffeted by the world and its principalities (Ephesians 6:12). It is within this buffeting process that we learn to perfect our love, practice patience, forgiveness, gentleness and non- judgment toward others. Walking in the Spirit will actually bring about a demonic attack and sometimes God will allow these demonic attacks to intensify in our lives (Job 1,2) so that we will be forced to consistently walk in the Spirit and thus eventually gain the fruits of the Spirit (Ephesians 6:11-18). God will also use sicknesses and illnesses in an effort to force us to walk in the Spirit (and crucify the flesh). Below is an example of how Paul the apostle experienced this struggle.

2 Corinthians 12:7-10

And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure. For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me. And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ’s sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.

A messenger of Satan buffeted Paul. I believe this buffeting was a continual demonic attack that came primarily through the Jews who were trying to hinder Paul’s every move (Acts 14:8-19). Paul stated that through this buffeting process (abiding… sanctifying process), God was able to bring Paul the apostle low… arranging his life and gearing it towards spiritual submission. This process forced Paul to rely upon God and yield himself over to walking in the Spirit. When this happened, God was able to work perfectly through Paul in his weakened and humbled state.

The message is simple. God the Father wants us to rely on Him and it is when our flesh is made weak and humble through this sanctifying/abiding process that He is able to become strong inside of us. This process results in us crucifying the flesh and thus, we maintain and gain the fruits of the Spirit. Trust me, if Paul had not initially decided to abide in Jesus by walking in the Spirit then this messenger of Satan would have never come. The messenger came because Paul made a choice to submit by abiding in Jesus and as a result, submit his vessel fully upon God’s sanctifying alter (Romans 12:1-2). This decision by Paul allowed God to do an even greater work through him… so that God’s purposes could be manifested (Genesis 45:8 – half of the books of the NT).

A concise way of understanding God’s will in sanctification is this. Salvation will cost you nothing… but sanctification… will cost you everything. It is true that once we become Christians we are sanctified in Jesus (1 Corinthians 1:2). The point is our sanctification is not just faith in Jesus or belief in Him. Sanctification is the process of perfecting holiness within the life of the believer. Sanctification involves almost every characteristic and spiritual unction within the life of the believer. Whether it is prayer, reading the word, meditation, fasting, obedience, suffering, walking in the Spirit, crucifying the flesh, abiding in Jesus (read Sanctification 101 located in Volume 3). All of these spiritual processes together become sanctifying in the life of the believer. Holiness is the end goal of the believer but sanctification becomes the spiritual vehicle that gets you there (the narrow path if you will). The Holy Ghost’s continual working in the life of the submitted believer yields sanctification (or holiness) within that believer.

The pearl of great price talked about in the Bible is likened to Christ (Matthew 13:45-46). The pearl itself is Christ likeness (which only comes about through sanctification). The pearl is the only gemstone which is created by the agitation of a living organism. What does this mean to Christians? We are called to abide in Jesus. This abiding process, and consequent pruning by the Father (John 15:1-8), is the agitation process that yields Christ likeness in the Christian (the pearl). We abide in Jesus (this begins the process). God the Father prunes us (heavy agitation against our flesh). In time, we begin bearing spiritual fruit (we gain Christ likeness or the pearl). This comparison is easy to understand. The process of walking in the Spirit and not fulfilling the lusts of the flesh is agitating. The process of receiving pruning via the Father is extremely agitating (2 Corinthians 12:7-10). This agitating eventually creates Christ like fruits within us. The Christ like character and spiritual fruits we gain from this abiding process is likened to a pearl. Thus, the pearl of great price becomes Christ likeness within us (holiness)…

Philippians 1:29

For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake;

The way I like to envision the process is to understand that once we are saved, we now have a uniform in which to participate (Holy Ghost). Without salvation in Jesus’ name, there is no uniform. Now, uniforms don’t solely win games. Participation (while wearing the uniform) is what wins games. Once we are saved and have been given the uniform of sanctification, it now becomes our burden to participate in accordance to that uniform. Paul the apostle said it like this:

1 Corinthians 9:24-27

Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain. And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible. I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air: But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.

When you see a police officer wearing a uniform, do you expect that officer to walk contrary to that uniform? No… of course not. That officer will uphold the integrity of that uniform (or he’ll be stripped). Upon salvation, Christians are given the uniform of sanctification to walk therein (Holy Ghost). Once we have been given that uniform, it becomes God’s absolute will that we walk in it, thus upholding the integrity of that uniform. Those who choose not to uphold the integrity of sanctification after becoming saved become guilty of not abiding on the vine (John 15:4, Hebrews 6:1-6)… these people bear no spiritual fruit and can do nothing (Matthew 7:15-23, Matthew 12:30).

I trust I have made it clear that once God the Father draws us to Himself, He expects us to abide in Jesus Christ so we will yield consistent spiritual fruit. With this understood, I would now like to discuss the mistakes we make when we covet the power of God and His anointing.

Anointing

We are all anointed because the Holy Ghost lives in all believers (2 Corinthians 1:21).

1 John 2:20,27

But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth…

As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit–just as it has taught you, remain in him.

Because the Holy Ghost is inside us at all times He is clearly our strength throughout the sanctification process. The Holy Ghost helps us stay calm, helps us stay determined and helps us to stay prayerful and watchful. The Holy Ghost’s anointing is clearly our direction reminding us of Jesus (John 16:13-14, 14:26). But the anointing of God is also the power of God (Isaiah 10:27) to break up, to bind up, to loose and to cast down and to scatter. There is no doubt the power of God rests with His anointing. But is the anointing of God our goal? What should be our attitude towards God’s anointing?

It is unwise for us to seek or rest in the anointing of God without first submitting to His process of holy sanctification in our lives. I would like to carefully explain the difference between being drawn (Called) and anointed of God the Father and being drawn (Called) and anointed of God the Father and then choosing to submit and abide in Jesus… thus making Him your Lord. You see, there is a difference. Some people have the first experience, but then choose not to perform the second. These people are called but are not chosen (Matthew 22:14)…

1. They are indeed drawn (Called) of God the Father and enlightened with the Holy Spirit (anointed – Hebrews 6:4)

2. But they disobey the enlightenment (Holy Spirit) they have received and never make Jesus their Lord (they are not Chosen)

The Bible declares clearly that a person is drawn (Called) by God the Father (John 6:37, 44-45, 65, 8:42, Matthew 16:17). This person drawn receives the light of life and the knowledge that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. Now, this process is wholly orchestrated by God the Father (not by Jesus Christ). Once this person is empowered by the Father (is given the Holy Spirit) and has consequently become the light of the world (Matthew 5:14), this person is now (by the same anointing) commanded to obey God the Father by choosing to abide in Jesus (which is the Fathers will). If they obey the unction of the Spirit and abide in Jesus, they will become like the 11 apostles (a good tree – Matthew 7:17). If they disobey and abide not in Jesus, they will become like Judas (a corrupt tree – Matthew 7:17).

You see… God in his infinite wisdom has allowed a process of submission whereby a persons fruits will bear witness as to what kind of tree they are. The interesting aspect of all this is there is a void or separation between Jesus’ participation and God the Fathers participation within this drawing process. God the Father is responsible for drawing people to Jesus (John 6:37, 44-45, 65, 8:42, Matthew 16:17). Once this drawing (Calling) process has occurred, it is now up to the person to surrender to the Holy Ghost’s leading and make Jesus their Lord. It is entirely possible (and very common) for someone to be drawn (Called) of the Father and even become enlightened with the Holy Spirit (Hebrews 6:4), but to consequently never surrender to the Holy Spirit’s leading to abide in Jesus Christ. On the Day of Judgment, the Holy Ghost within them will fully testify that this person never once listened to instruction and Jesus will concur by telling these people, “I never knew you. Depart from me, you who work iniquity (Matthew 7:23).” These people were drawn (Called) of God the Father but they never chose to make Jesus their Lord. This is very common and is why there are so many who are deceiving and being deceived (2 Timothy 3:13, James 1:22). These, “so called Christians” are just like the angels who kept not their first estate (Jude 1:6). They are indeed believers (James 2:19) who do not submit to God the Father.

Many are drawn (Called) by God the Father into the fellowship of the Spirit (Philippians 2:1, 3:10). I assure you, not all these people choose that “fellowship of the Spirit.” They actually chose not to follow Christ, neither do they make Him their Lord… (though His name is never far from their lips).

Some might say… it’s impossible for someone to be drawn (Called) of God the Father but to not be known by Jesus. This is ignorance of the scriptures. Jesus Christ has nothing to do with the drawing process. Jesus is Lord and we are to surrender to His Lordship once we have been drawn by God the Father into the fellowship of the Spirit… the thing is many don’t. Many are drawn by God the Father but then chose to never have any kind of fellowship with Jesus Christ through the Spirit. This is why Jesus declares He doesn’t know them…

Matthew 7:21-27

Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity (Matthew 22:1-14). Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them (2 Timothy 2:20), I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not (2 Corinthians 11:15, Matthew 7:16-20), shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.

The above verse describes a person who is drawn (Called) of God the Father but who never follows the Holy Spirit and makes Jesus their Lord. They’re not Christian. They’re called but not chosen. They do not gather with Jesus but they scatter abroad (Matthew 12:30). Yes… they have the authority to cast out devils and to prophesy because they have been drawn (Called) by God the Father and have become partakes of the heavenly gift (Holy Ghost) (Hebrews 6:4), but they are not with Jesus because they rebelliously and willfully do their own thing. These are men and women of unclean motives and deceitful ambitions (Jude 1:5-13) who have never surrendered to the authority of the anointing (Spirit) within them. The authority which empowers them they do not obey… mostly because they choose to do their own thing by not dedicated themselves to the Lord Jesus Christ according to His purposes. They do not build the Father’s kingdom on earth as Jesus did… but build their own kingdoms according to their various desires. These men and women are known of God the Father, but they are not known of Jesus Christ because they never surrendered to Him. They have never obeyed the spiritual promptings of the Holy Ghost which empowers them to follow Jesus Christ. They are Judas’, drawn by God the Father (John 6:70) but who have clung on to the name of Jesus for their own reward (John 12:4-6); and God the Father, in His infinite wisdom and understanding (Psalm 147:5) is going to allow this for His kingdom purposes and to declare to the world that He indeed is the one who will judge the quick and the dead according to Christ (Proverbs 16:4, Isaiah 45:7). Notice above what Jesus Christ says right after condemning these men. He gives an example saying if a man did the things He preached (chose to abide on the vine – John 15:1-8) then he would have a strong foundation, if he didn’t… then his foundation would be destroyed (Matthew 7:24-27).

The unmistakable will of God the Father (once you’ve been drawn (Called) by Him) is to (surrender) and make Jesus Christ your Lord (abide on the vine – John 15:1-8) and to fully surrender to the unction of the Holy Spirit (Whose job it is to testify of Jesus – John 16:13-14, 14:26). It’s all about Jesus Christ (Colossians 1:16)… this is God the Fathers will regarding every person drawn of Him. Notice the scriptures declare it is by a man’s actions or choices which determines whether he stands or falls (Acts 1:25).

Romans 9:20-23

Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus? Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour? What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction: And that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared unto glory,

It is our choice whether or not we want to be a vessel of honor or dishonor (2 Timothy 2:20-21, 1 Peter 2:7-8). Notice the above passage says nothing regarding the choices we make, that’s because it is our choice to decide what kind of vessel God will eventually mold us into, and God has ordained that He will leave that choice in our hands. It is God’s Will to allow human beings to exercise their self will. Remember this verse:

2 Timothy 2:20-21

But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour. If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master’s use, and prepared unto every good work.

You see, it’s our choice to make Jesus our Lord and follow Him wholly. We must remember that God knew before the world began if we would surrender to Jesus’ Lordship (Romans 8:29-39). It was this choice that determined what kind of vessel or “lump” God would eventually mold us into. Please notice the word “fitted” in Romans 9:22. To fit is not to choose the kind of garment someone will wear… to fit is to make snug or complete the garment one has chosen to wear. God does not dress us up and then fit us… He fits what we have already chosen to dress ourselves with. Both the Romans verses and the Timothy verses imply the same thing. They don’t imply that God makes our choices and then molds us into what He wants us to become. They imply that God looks at what we have chosen to become and then according to those choices, completes us “fits us” according to the vessel’s that will fit His purposes. Do you think that Pharaoh in the Old Testament had no shot at ever serving the one true God? No, that would be totally unbiblical (Daniel 4). If God could change Nebuchadnezzar’s heart through chastening then He could have done the same thing with Pharaoh. God simply observed (1 Samuel 16:6-7) the bad choices Pharaoh consistently made and then according to those bad choices God decided to mold Pharaoh into a particular vessel of dishonor (Exodus 9:16-21, 10:1). Bad choices became their undoing (2 Corinthians 11:13-15, Emphasis on V. 15, Acts 1:25). Actions which revealed these people to clearly be vessels of dishonor.

What we need to understand regarding a man’s choices in the Lord is that God has given man the freedom to choose according to self will (Joshua 24:15). God will not disrespect any man’s right to choose. But once a man does choose, in choosing, he places himself upon God’s potter’s wheel. Once this happens, God has full power and authority to mold this man into whatsoever vessel He deems appropriate according to His overall plan of salvation for mankind. This is what God did with Pharaoh who chose evil (Exodus 9: 19), this is what God did with Paul who chose Christ (2 Corinthians 12:7-10), and this is what God will do with you… whatever you choose (Matthew 7:24-27 + 2 Timothy 2:21 + 2 Corinthians 11:15 = Romans 9:20-23).

Judas

It’s obvious Judas was drawn (Called) of God (John 6:70) and was even chosen as an apostle (John 6:70). God knew though that Judas would chose to transgress (John 6:70, Acts 1:25). But… God numbered him with the twelve and he obtained part of the ministry (Acts 1:17). A lot of people might ask, “Wait a second? If God knew Judas was going to transgress then why would He choose him?”

It is clear that when Jesus Christ sent the twelve out with power that Judas was among them. It says in the Bible that the twelve cast out many demons and that they anointed many with oil and healed them (Mark 6:7-13). Let me ask you a straightforward question… after Judas betrayed Jesus and consequently hung himself, do you think the very people whom Judas laid hands on and healed, or those whom he cast out devils, returned to their old estate? Do you think that just because Judas transgressed that those whom he helped automatically reverted back into their bondage? No, they didn’t. In fact John, in the book of John, tells us that Judas was a thief, and that he would steal what was in the money purse (John 12:6). This means that while Judas was numbered with the twelve, and while he was healing and prophesying and exercising power over unclean spirits according to God’s will, that he was stealing as well. Yet God still used him.

I am going to repeat myself again (Philippians 3:1).

Matthew 7:21:23

Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

I have already clarified in the last section that fellowship with the Holy Spirit (making Jesus your absolute Lord) is a separate act from God the Father drawing you. Many are called but few are chosen. The parable of the sower explains that some receive the word with joy but are offended when asked to suffer for His names sake (Matthew 13:8-23, Philippians 2:1, 3:10). We have the example in John 6:66 where many of Jesus’ disciples “walked with him no more” just because Jesus said that His body was the bread from heaven. The scriptures even say these disciples were “offended” and could not bear His saying (John 6:60-61). Making Jesus your Lord is no joke… and God has determined that the drawing process would be the initial unction (communion with the Spirit) but then making Jesus Christ your Lord and Savior would become the submissive act to be born by the believer alone (some do this with their lips, but not with their hearts). This is the reason many of Jesus’ apostles made many mistakes and even self will choices after they were drawn to Jesus by the Father. The drawing process was a sure thing but subsequent from that, choices made and hearts manifest became the burden of the apostles alone (God the Father and Jesus Christ have no power over these). If you are truly honest with yourself and you’ve understood this interpretation thus far, then you understand the reasoning fully. Jesus Christ’s first coming was a test to mankind… to manifest true hearts (Luke 2:35). Were you willing to worship a bleeding and bruised suffering savior… rather than an all powerful King? Make no mistake about it… God the Father drawing you is the wooing process and making Jesus Christ your Lord and savior is your consummation of that drawing process.

Here’s a good question you might ask yourself at this point… did Jesus know Judas? You might say, “Well of course Jesus knew him, he was one of his disciples.” Yes, this is true. But did He really know him?

Here’s an example. If you were married, and you and your wife had been married for over five years then you would say that you knew your wife pretty well. You knew the little things about her. When she got up, what she liked to eat, how she liked to play little games or to make a fuss. You knew the basics about her. But what if she had another life, one you didn’t know about? What if someone came to you one day and told you that your wife had been having an affair ever since before you were married? That she was meeting with this individual at least three times a week for the last seven years. What would you say about knowing her? You would be speechless, and you would declare, “I was married to this woman for 5 years and I never even knew who she really was. She had another life going on, one that I was completely unaware of. All I can say is that every day I looked at a woman who was living a totally different life than the one I thought she was living. As I look back now, and remember the look in her eyes, I realize the things she was thinking about, and the things I was thinking about, were totally different.”

Even though you clearly knew things about your wife, there were other things she hid from you. These things you knew nothing about. The fact that these things were hid from you made you feel as though you didn’t even know your wife at all.

If the Lord were to judge Judas and He were to say… “I never knew you, depart from me, you who work iniquity.” Then Judas might say, “But wait Lord, you did know me. We hung out for three years, we slept under the same stars, we ate from the same dish and we walked down the same roads.” And Jesus would reply, “Yes you’re right, we did all of those things, but I still never knew you.” And Judas would say, “What do you mean?” And Jesus would say, “For three years I thought I knew you, I thought we had a camaraderie, I thought we believed in the same things… but all the while you were a thief. You had a part of your life that was hidden from me, (unconfessed and separate). I knew the outside of you Judas, the shell of you… but I never knew the real you, the inside of you. This you hid from me Judas, and I clearly never knew the real you.

Do you understand? If Jesus Christ can have this kind of response toward a person who physically walked with him for three years… what kind of response might Jesus have toward someone who never made Him their Lord? A person who was drawn of God the Father and Called, (like Judas) but who refused to acknowledge the Lordship of Jesus Christ in their life (John 10:29). This is no game. The Bible says even the demons believe, and they tremble (James 2:19). The Bible also says to be a doer of the Word, and not a hearer only, deceiving your own selves (James 1:22). Trust me, I am not in the business of ministering a condemnation gospel. I am not in the business of trying to oppress or burden anyone. It is blatant ignorance that people want to believe lies regarding the holy scriptures and do not want to rightly divide the Word of truth (2 Timothy 2:15). There are many…many in and around the church who have never surrendered their lives to the Lordship of Jesus Christ (Matthew 7:22 – emphasis on the word many). Jesus even says in the scriptures, “And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? (Luke 6:46). If you abide in Jesus and do as He says, your good fruits bear witness that Jesus is your Lord. If you do not abide in Jesus and you do not do as Jesus says, your corrupt fruits bear witness that Jesus is not your Lord (Matthew 7:17-18, 1 Timothy 4:1-5).

At this point one might say, “I kind of understand… but I am still confused as to why God the Father has to resort to using wicked men. Why does God the Father Call them at all. Why doesn’t He just Call men who are going to surrender to Jesus’ Lordship fully?” This question seems valid… but when we discern the scriptures in relation to God’s ordained relationship with man, we find the question is rooted in ignorance. Let’s look at this next verse.

Mark 9:38-39

And John answered him, saying, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name, and he followeth not us: and we forbad him, because he followeth not us. But Jesus said, Forbid him not: for there is no man which shall do a miracle in my name, that can lightly speak evil of me.

Here was a man who was “seemingly” doing the work of God the Father. We can’t know everything about him, but we do know what Jesus’ attitude was regarding him. Jesus advised that the man be left alone to do the work he felt he was obligated to do. Notice that this man had the anointing of God, he was casting out devils… and Jesus himself also adds that no man doing a miracle in my name can lightly speak evil of me. This obviously means that no man using the anointing of God in Jesus’ name (and seeing that it works) is then going to turn around and speak evil of the same name which results in such power (Jesus Christ). But here’s the question, does that necessarily make the man a minister of righteousness? It is interesting according to the information I have thus given regarding the Father drawing a person (and Jesus Christ having no opinion on the matter) that here Jesus clearly… has no opinion on the matter. You can even say regarding the above example, Jesus is leaving this person “in the Fathers hands.” Now I personally believe if this person came to Jesus and asked for guidance, that Jesus would teach accordingly. What is interesting is this person doesn’t come to Jesus. The interesting aspect is that Jesus doesn’t go after him, He reserves his opinion regarding the man. That is, until the judgment (Acts 10:42). What is so interesting is that Jesus just leaves this person… “in the Father’s care,” fully trusting that God the Father might still be calling this person to a more intimate revelation of who He is. Jesus clearly leaves it all… in the Fathers capable hands. Actually, the man Apollos comes to mind (Acts 18:24-25).

We do know from Matthew 7 that someone can prophesy and cast out devils and yet still the Lord will say to them… “I never knew you.” These actions by themselves will never make any man a minister of righteousness. It will make him a vessel of dishonor that the Lord might be forced to use (2 Timothy 2:20) due to God’s ordained relationship with man… but also due to man’s fickleness. But it doesn’t make him a minister of righteousness. We know from the above verse that Jesus Himself will not stop a man from “seemingly” doing the work of the Lord (take that to heart Christian… God has not called you to defend Him, just to protect yourselves). We do know from Matthew 7 that any man “seemingly” performing the work of the Lord will be judged… and he won’t be judged by the miracles which he preformed, but by the character of his heart (did he surrender to Jesus’ Lordship – Matthew 7:21). Though you still might not get it…

What we have to remember, even to the utmost, is that man is in charge of man’s relationship with God… not God. Let’s try an example. There is a certain businessman. This businessman has made 20 million dollars. He has basically satisfied himself by attaining all the goals he felt he needed to achieve during his lifetime. He also feels quite secure. Then, about five years later, he gets depressed. The man has no goals left to achieve… but interestingly enough, he still has a certain zeal for life. He goes to a revival and catches a glimpse of the power of God. He sees the ministers and prophets working powerfully and at that exact moment he’s pricked (Acts 2:37) because he realizes there is a lot he hasn’t accomplished. He’s filled with purpose. He decides that he is going to accomplish in God. As a result, the man humbles himself as much as he’s able, and bowing his head he asks a minister to pray for him. The Father from heaven draws him (John 6:37, 44-45, 65, 8:42, Matthew 16:17). God the Father has met the man where he is at.

This man, like Simon the sorcerer (Acts 8:18-24), has humbled himself… probably for all the wrong reasons. Not to mention, God can only use the men who are currently at the revival (maybe not the cream of the crop when it comes to truth or integrity). You might ask, “Well… then why did God draw him there, if God knew he humbled himself for the wrong reasons? Why did He draw him at all?” You’re looking at it entirely from the wrong perspective. At the moment when the businessman humbled himself and asked God to use him… there was no God’s request to man but only man’s request toward God. Don’t you remember when James and John requested to sit at the right and left hand of Jesus Christ in His Glory? Well… they ended up getting much more than they bargained for (Mark 10:38-39). You might say, “Well that’s true but what about this businessman? He is rich and wayward and now he’s been drawn by God into confusion… whose price is that?” Without Jesus as his savior, the price will be his soul (Matthew 7:21-23, Romans 9:20-23). Do you think he’ll end up in a better place not being drawn by God to Jesus? Even if it is in confusion? God loves mankind, and He will use many different means (and diverse characters) to draw souls unto Himself. There are many different avenues which we critically judge as being too “risqué” for God to work with but God is desirous to save the soul and He is not grieved to use sinful mankind in various ways in order to give man an opportunity to become saved. This revival where this businessman went might not be the most God honoring place in terms of God’s purposes but God is certainly willing to meet him there (by His Holy Spirit) in order to draw him into the kingdom (1 Timothy 2:3-4).

Just for clarification. In some cases God will not disciple someone even though they desire it (Mark 5:18-19, Exodus 33:19). Maybe the person was frail, wounded or simply didn’t possess the proper gifts to be called into a respective ministry. It is common for this to happen, but if a man comes to the Lord and is eager to be called and fits certain God ordained criteria (Leviticus 21:16-24, 1 Timothy 1:11-13) then trust me when I say that the Lord will be hard pressed to walk away from such a request. There is far too much for God to lose. You might say, “What do you mean, for God to lose.” Lets say this businessman came to the alter and God suffered him but then turned him away in terms of being drawn. This man, for the rest of his life, would question and reason within himself exactly why God didn’t give him an opportunity, and in heaven he would ask, “Lord, why didn’t you anoint me to serve you and your church, I would have done a good job with all my gifts?” And God would simply say “Because.” Now let me ask you a question, do you think this is a sufficient answer from God? This is clearly not a relationship answer. If you asked a good friend a serious question and their answer was “Because”, then you would probably sneer at them for their insincerity. This is common sense, and for this reason God will usually allow a man the opportunity he requests or feels he deserves. That way, in heaven, God becomes blameless, and such men will then say, “Lord, Lord, did we not prophecy in thy name, did we not cast out devils… did we not do many miracles in thy name?” And Jesus will say, “I never knew you.” Do you understand the concept? If a man makes a request at the alter, and there is really nothing technically standing in the way of God drawing him through the Holy Ghost… then because of the relationship God the Father has ordained between Himself and man by faith, and because of God the Fathers concept of choice which establishes itself through accountability, then God will almost always take a man at his word. This is called relationship, and relationship involves choices and repercussions of choices. God is not afraid to give a man the chance to fail, and God is not afraid to give a man the chance to succeed. Make no mistake about it… it was the businessman who fell at the alter and told God he would be a good servant. If God were never to give him the chance to fail, then how would that businessman ever really know who he was? (I clarify more on this in the later section titled Holy Ghost Witness)

How many of us have heard stories of pastors who say that they were a minister for 16 years before they even surrendered their life to Jesus’ Lordship. Some might even speak of healing ministries and of casting out devils during their first 16 years. This is the exact example I am referring to. These men were never properly serving the Lord… but because these men exalted themselves (Mark 9:38-39), and because God knew others would rely upon them for council including specific direction for their lives… then God basically became forced to helped them as Shepard’s over their respective congregations during those first 16 years. What? Do you think God is going to allow an entire congregation to perish because of mans ignorant self-exaltation and self-gratification, especially when the entire congregation of God is relying on that pastor? I think not. God will use these men as vessels of dishonor… not to their honor of course, but because these men exalted themselves and now their entire congregation is looking to them for spiritual direction (you can apply this to prophets and evangelists too). Don’t be deceived; many times in the Old Testament there were wicked kings over Israel and Judah. These kings made a choice to do evil, and God, because of His Namesake, mercifully put up with them. You can be sure He mostly put up with these wicked kings because all of Israel was looking to them for direction and support… and God used these wicked kings in order to uphold His people Israel and to make sure that He Himself was never left without a witness (Jeremiah 38:14-21, 52:9-11, 1 Kings 16:30, 20:13-14, Acts 14:17). So He used these wicked kings… not for their own sake or honor, but for His Namesake and for Israel’s sake. So it is also for His own Namesake (Mark 9:38-39) and for the sake of the congregations of God (body of Christ) that God will put up with wicked ministers (Matthew 13:28-29). But also because of the accountability process God has ordained with man… and for choices’ sake (Judas), because this indeed is how the hearts of men are tried (1 Corinthians 1:29, Luke 2:35).

I know there still might be some lingering questions as to what I have discussed at length, but I hope the next sections are able to clarify some doubts concerning God’s usage of unconsecrated ministers (who don’t surrender themselves to Jesus’ Lordship) and how the process of choice as well as the consequences of those choices (accountability) become an integral part of God’s plan regarding His relationship with man.

Vessel of Dishonor

We need to seek God for the right reasons and with the right temperament, or we can find ourselves being used… but being used as a vessel of dishonor (Romans 9:20-23). It can happen. The Devil is smooth and would rather destroy you without you even knowing it (2 Timothy 3:7,13). You might be prophesying in his name, or even casting out devils, but your heart might be far from Jesus’ purposes on earth. People who have made this undiscerning choice have become seduced and have gone the way of Balaam (Jude 1:11), seeking God for their own reward (gain) and for His power (1 Timothy 6:5). Because of their deep and hidden selfish motives they have quickly become led astray and far away from Jesus Christ’s purposes for His church. They have ignorantly coveted God’s power and His Spirit to quickly and have became thoroughly blinded in the process (1 Timothy 3:6). It is true they have fallen before God the Father in repentance, but then have quickly coveted to reap reward blessing and exaltation at the cost of Christ’s sacrifice for His church (Acts 8:18-24). This is an ignorant mindset and can easily be defeated by the correct council (Hosea 4:6, Acts 8:22) God then willing to pardon such offenders because of his great mercies sake (Acts 8:22, Joel 2, 1 Kings 21:27-29, Jonah 3:5-10, Isaiah 43:22-28).

In fact the Lord gave us the latter end of parable Matthew 7:22-27 because He is faithful to forgive. It says in the Bible that all scripture is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness (2 Timothy 3:16). God gave us this parable because it can instruct in what is right. If you analyze the parable, then you can see there would be no edifying reason to teach it other then to expose the ignorance it counters as well as for helping those who were in desperate need of it’s teaching. That is why Jesus immediately gives advice on what a man should do in order to have a healthy relationship with the Lord. If there were no chance for such men to be forgiven… then there would have been no reason for Jesus to give instruction through the later end of this parable.

Therefore in order to be perfect (Matthew 5:48, 19:21) within God’s Holy Spirit (anointing), God desires that you are sanctified and walking in the fear of the Lord with the fruits of the Spirit evident in your life. It is absolutely impossible to do this without first surrendering your life over to the Lordship of Jesus Christ (John 15:1-8). Jesus said, “deny yourselves, take up your cross, and follow Me (Matthew 16:24).” Follow Him!!! If you are not ready to surrender everything to Christ, then you are in danger of setting yourself up as a vessel of dishonor. The Lord Jesus Christ is not a taskmaster, but His desire that you surrender all is not negotiable. Remember, “For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.” When you surrender all to Jesus you will find life abundant (John 10:10). When I surrendered everything to the Lordship of Jesus Christ He eventually brought me a beautiful wife. Surrender your life to Jesus Christ, because when you do… the Father will be pleased and He knows how to give good gifts (James 1:17, Matthew 7:11). When you obey and make Jesus your Lord, you will have defeated any condemnation of being exalted too quickly (because Jesus won’t exalt you too quickly) and you will further purge yourself from any dishonoring materials (2 Timothy 2:20). In doing this, any anointing (Holy Spirit) resting upon you (Isaiah 42:1, Matthew 3:16-17) will be ready to do a tremendous work once the Lord hath wrought a completion in you (Daniel 11:32-33).

The sad part is… a lot of vessels of dishonor have not surrendered their lives to Jesus Christ and are creating enormous damage in and around the church today. These men and women do not have any Christ likeness in them because they are not of Christ at all (nor have they ever been). They have no fruits of the Spirit evident in their lives whatsoever (Matthew 7:15-23 Emphasis on V. 20). They are walking around with God’s gift and they’re breaking stuff because they are not building God’s kingdom (Hebrews 6:4). Our misunderstanding of this situation is not the Lords will and is rooted in ignorance… but we must always remember that God indeed works within our decisions (remember… vessels of honor/vessels of dishonor). God has chosen to work in spite of us (Matthew 25:26), even within our ignorance and sinfulness (Psalm 81:11-12, Romans 8:28, Jonah 1:15-16). This becomes the Devil’s accusation of faith against the Called, and this becomes the Devil’s accusation of relationship against the Called (Job 1:9-11).

Consecrated Anointing

If God has a man who is willing to walk down the road of sanctification with Jesus as the head and is obedient to walk in the maturity of the fruits of the Spirit then God will actually turn this persons anointing inward. This inward direction of the anointing will proceed to break the yokes within that specific man, but not show itself toward those who are around him (Isaiah 10:27). In other words, this person will not appear to be anointed at all. But this is actually false… this person is anointed but the anointing is pointed inward in God’s effort to crucify the self. This process crucifies the self will as well as the desires of the flesh. It prepares the specific man for the master’s good use (2 Timothy 2:20). At certain times, and in certain situations, God will allow the anointing (Holy Spirit) to manifest itself outwardly (Acts 15:12-16, 19:11-12) but for the most part that person must do without. This is so the person will learn to seek God in the strength of commitment and in the Spirit of suffering (1 Samuel 30:6-8) as did Jesus, and not within God’s present witness and manifestation of the anointing. This process will wean the person off the necessity of a consistent exposed anointing. Then, when God’s anointing is really needed, this person will be prepared. This person will be mature within the anointing and will not seek to use the anointing for any carnal or selfish purposes. A man who is weaned off the necessity of the external manifestation of the anointing of God will one day become a man who can accurately and honorably abide within God’s consecrated anointing. Paul the apostle became such a man (1 Corinthians 4:18-21, 2 Corinthians 10). The two witness in the book of Revelation will become such men (Revelation 11).

Why would God give His heavenly gift (Holy Ghost) this quick and easy if He knew men would rebel (Hebrews 6:4)?

Luke 9:51-56

And it came to pass, when the time was come that he should be received up, he stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem, And sent messengers before his face: and they went, and entered into a village of the Samaritans, to make ready for him. And they did not receive him, because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem. And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did? But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of Spirit ye are of. For the Son of man is not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them. And they went to another village.

We have to remember that the Holy Ghost of God is not conditional. Our Calling with God and our gifts are established (Romans 11:29). What is conditional however are the choices we make in the Lord. The Lord has no power over these. All the Lord can do is permit us with His gifting and believe we mean what we say. Beyond this, the accountability is fully on us (Romans 14:12, 1 Peter 4:5). This is how the Lord has ordained it, and on an even deeper level, this is how the hearts of men are tried (Proverbs 17:3, 1 Thessalonians 2:4).

Holy Ghost Witness

I addressed this a bit in the other section but I need to bring more clarity… but also with regard to the consecrated anointing. God the Father is not grieved to call and impart His Holy Ghost upon man because of His desire to save people. God, in His infinite wisdom (Romans 9:20-23, 11:33-36), will use what is at His disposal and will work in association with a man’s choices and desires. This is why I stated earlier that the Lord would be hard pressed to walk away from the businessman’s desire to be used. I stated that there would be far too much for God to lose. More men evangelizing and prophesying means more opportunities for souls to be saved (Mark 9:38-39). You might say, well, that’s not fair… why would God make this man fall by distributing the Holy Spirit? God is not making any man fall. It is our own selfish motives and our unconsecrated hearts that make us fall (James 1:13-15), God’s Holy Spirit is never going to change that. God will expose our sinfulness and He’ll even use His Holy Spirit to do it, and at the same time… in His infinite wisdom, He’ll save souls in the process (Philippians 1:15-18). But referring to what God will allow. What about quick marriages, or even hasty business arrangements? Or even someone being ordained to quickly in a church (1 Timothy 3:6)? God clearly cautions us against all these things… yet they still happen. Sometimes God is forced to anoint us just to keep us level with our mistakes. The final result of a man falling within such a process is not as big of a problem as it would seem. God really doesn’t have a problem with a man falling (2 Samuel 24:1, 1 Chronicles 21:1, Psalm 37:23-24); in fact it is this falling process that inspires the opportunity for a cleansing work. It humbles a man and it gives a man the chance to repent and cry out to God. God is not ashamed of us when we fall; He is ashamed of us when we are too proud to admit that we can fall (Luke 18:9-14). For God the Father to impart His Holy Spirit on a man is really a win/win situation. Basically, beyond common sense reasons, the only time God will withhold The Holy Spirit from working externally in a man’s life is by that man’s own permission… when someone (by their actions) is willing to allow the Lord to do a deep work inside of them (Galatians 1:16-24). God will direct the Holy Spirit inwardly on this person so He can train them up properly (Hebrews 12:11). God the Father will conform this man into the image of His suffering Son, then… when the person becomes full mature, God will direct the Holy Spirit outwardly in order to break the yokes on those who are burdened all around him (Luke 4:18-19).

Anointing’s Defense

There is nothing wrong with the gift of God (Holy Ghost – John 4:10, Acts 2:38) or the calling of God (Romans 11:29); it is how they are misused that is the problem. We are ignorant regarding their purposes (in terms of God and man). We don’t understand God’s perspective in the matter and we play games regarding man’s accountability. We do this because we are far away from Jesus Christ (Ephesians 4:7-13). God is not going to Call a man through the Holy Ghost and then take it away from him (Romans 11:29). Our God is a consuming fire. He is an intimate God. He wants our heart and He wants our devotion. A God who anoints us with Himself is a God who wants fellowship with us. As I stated before, God will anoint a man just to prove to a man how truly sinful he is. God knows the choices that a man will make but the Holy Ghost just magnifies those choices and brings about a consequence (which we are probably in need of). If God were not to anoint a man then that man would still be yearning to make those same mistakes… but because the Holy Ghost was withheld, that man will never come to the realization of how sinful he would have become within the Holy Ghost (within God). We are all teachable within God’s Spirit according to the revelation of Christ (1 John 2:27) and sometimes God will use His Holy Ghost to show us how truly rebellious we are, and He’ll even get souls saved in the process (Philippians 1:15-18, Romans 8:28).

Don’t think even for a second that God will withhold His Holy Ghost just because people wouldn’t deal correctly with it. If God were to only impart His Holy Ghost to those who would never fail then no one would get it. The Devil would also have about 1000 accusations in heaven against the Called… and they would all stick (Job 1, 2). The Holy Ghost is imparted to those who raise their hands, but not all who raise their hands know the correct answer… even though they will be Called upon (Matthew 22:1-14, emphasis on V. 14). The Lord will allow tests in our lives. The Holy Ghost of God is undoubtedly one of the burdensome temptations for man, and the Devil loves to have it so.

What we can do and learn

People right now who are called by God the Father and who are graced with the Holy Ghost and who are not being wise accordingly should repent immediately and make Jesus Christ Lord of their lives. You must follow Jesus… and only Jesus. You must be wholly surrendered to Him. The most important verse for people who need to get right with God is this… Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me (Matthew 16:24). Notice Jesus says… “if any man will come after me.” This is a polite way of saying… “for without me you can do nothing (John 15:5).” Jesus Christ is not asking for your opinion. His statement is deliberate and absolute… “for without me you can do nothing (John 15:5).” This verse is the crux of all Christianity at the moment. We are a sick church because we have not made Jesus our Lord (The body is not aligned with the Head – this causes incredible sickness). We think because we’re called and have the Holy Ghost that everything is fine. Nothing could be further from the truth. We are not fine, and the world doesn’t see Jesus in the church (we are no witnesses). If you truly surrender to Jesus then the Holy Spirit will inspire you and convict you towards crucifying your flesh and it’s desires (asking God to turn the anointing inwardly) (John 16:7-11, Galatians 5:19-24). Jesus will then reign in your life. He will be the head, you will be the body. This is the only way it works. God the Father has a desire to restore all of us (Acts 8:22, Joel 2, 1 Kings 21:27-29, Jonah 3:5-10) but this restoration must come by way of obedience toward the Father. And how do we obey the Father? We believe in the one whom He sent… and we surrender to Jesus and to His Lordship fully (John 5:38, John 6:29, Luke 6:46-49). Once our surrender is real and unconditional, the process of sanctification in our lives will yield about a Christ likeness within our members. We will become a matured body and we will yield the fruits of the Spirit in our fiery seasons (Revelation 19:7, Ephesians 5:27). The world will finally see Christ in you (Colossians 1:27). I assure you, this is the only revival possible. Christ in you.

Please read this last scripture slowly. It sums up much of what I said during this entire interpretation. I assure you… for the final time, without Christ’s Lordship over you… Holy Ghost or not, you can do nothing.

John 15:1-8

I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.

Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.

Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.

Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.

I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.

If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.

Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.
