The modern day “Grace” message is like a Trojan horse. It come in the form of a gift, sent by the enemy. It is a false representation of peace, for once we allow it to come in through the gate it opens up and the trained spiritual assassins break forth in to the court yard of one’s mind. At this point they wrestle against the foundation of spiritual truth, knocking down the watchmen from the walls who stand in guard against the approach of the enemy in the open, until at they at last command the gate and allow to full force of the enemy to enter, bringing death and destruction until there is but a small remnant left, for which they imprison.

We must stand guard and be ever watchful, even to that which appears as a gift. For we must test all things in the spirit assuring that they are indeed from our Lord. We seek but the gifts send from above for it is they which build us up in our faith rather than the gifts of the enemy who seeks but to destroy us.

The enemy has weakened the foundation in preparation for the allowance of this “Trojan House” to come into the camp. For we see how the years of continued watering down of the gospel message, the very foundation of our faith has been replaced with societies wisdom, ethics and morals. The hearts have been prepared for such a message as they seek the wide path rather than enduring the narrow path which calls for obedience and sacrifice.

Now if this new “Grace Message” were true and indeed the law and the old testament have passed away, then the earth would sink into the sun and the very stars of heaven would fall. For it is the God of the Old Testament, who for w brief moment stepped upon earth to restore all things, who hold all things both in heaven and earth by His command & Word.

Now when one walks in the Spirit they see the laws of God and His Kingdom not a burden rather as a blessing. For what the Father decrees is with the revelation of Jeremiah 29:11 that He purposes everything for the good of His children that His name may be “Glorified”.

It is but by the Grace of God that a servant/son can be a blessing unto His Heavenly Father, for it is His Grace which is infused into us via Holy Ghost that empowers us to walk in spiritual victory having daily dealt a death blow to the carnal nature which seeks but to enthrone itself above all else in one’s life including the Lordship of our Christ. It is the Grace from above which daily places us at the foot of the cross were we lay down every fleshly desire that we may walk in the Spirit allowing the complete dominion of Jesus Christ to rule every aspect of our lives, for then is the Glory of the Father revealed to the world.

This false grace message is a drug—a poisonous sleeping pill that feels freeing, relaxing and euphoric. Yet this non Biblical grace overdose that’s occurring in churches all over the world is resulting in people’s careless, self-focused slumber that they will, one day, fail to awaken from.

I fear that it has already has and will bring even more division into the body. Many have already fallen into its trap and they are relentlessly seeking to drag others down with them. In fact whole Church have been consumed by this seductive destructive doctrine. We need the true watchmen to take to the walls and sound the alarm.

Again, many in this modern day “Grace Message” movement have already been shocked on the day of their death to find themselves escorted not into the presence of God by glorious angels, but rather by the most horrifying of demonic creatures into their new, eternal residence in Hell. It happens every day. I’m grieved and broken.

The Apostle Paul accurately predicted, “The time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to MYTHS” (2 Tim. 4:3,4).

Basically this new grace message is but a theology of exemption which states that since we are saved, we are exempt from the penalties of sin. This false gospel message ever so subtly exclaims that there are parts of the Bible that no longer apply to us. Yes, it’s a heresy. This new “Grace Message” removes bible-based responsibilities to respond to God in holiness.

The number of people who subconsciously or unwittingly embrace such a theology of exemption is far greater than those who explicitly pronounce their agreement with this doctrine. Many subscribe to new “Grace Message” doctrines without realizing their deception.

Many have been lulled into a false sense of security while actually existing in an unsaved state. They are confident they’d enter Heaven if they died, yet the reality is that they would not. They have come to believe they are exempt from certain parts of the Word of God that requires response.

But as the One Who called you is holy, you yourselves also be holy in all your conduct and manner of living. For it is written, You shall be holy, for I am holy.  And if you call upon Him as [your] Father Who judges each one impartially according to what he does, [then] you should conduct yourselves with true reverence throughout the time of your temporary residence [on the earth, whether long or short]. ( 1Peter 1:15-17)

I could go on with many more scriptures that would lay open the vulnerabilities of this new “Grace Message” that indeed it can hold no water in light of the truth of His Word. Yet I believe that I have given enough here that would cause any true Berean to dig deep and dislodge this heretical doctrine with the help of Holy Ghost guidance. Let us be ever vigilant, ever studying His Word that we may rightly divide the Word and not fall for any doctrines which seek to remove us from the very foundation of our faith according to that which the Lord has commanded and taught us in His Holy Word. Let us not allow any Trojan horse into our camp rather let us set them ablaze with the Fire of His truth before they even come close that they burn as a warning signal to others to see.

Servant of Christ


Having spent some time studying the history of the Church and seeing where we are as a nation I truly believe that we are in desperate need of a Spiritual reformation. It is time that we return back to the Red Letters of the Bible, it is time to release a 3 reformation in this nation. We see a nation who has fallen morally both in the secular government as well as the Church. This is not a war of division and is not a solution that can be reached through political upheaval. I am shocked at the amount of so called teachers within the Church that so boldly speak out against the government of America and it’s politicians as they are in direct opposition to what the New Testament teaches. No my brothers and sisters what we need is for the Church to repent, turn from it’s wickedness, cry out to our God and then we shall see our God heal our land. (2 Chron 7:14)

I read post after post by pastors who bash the president and they are ultimately dishonoring the Lord when they do so for they reject the wisdom of His Word for their own wisdom. We could replace all of congress, the house even to the President with Christian men and women yet that is not the solution.

We have a organized religious structure in this nation which has shaken their fist in the face of God and have permitted abominations to take place in the house of God.

They have allowed the vow of marriage to be disregarded. They have removed reverence and holiness from the pulpit and replaced it with seeker friendly messages based upon the philosophies and wisdom of this world. They have allowed the morality of the Church to be hijacked by the unethical moral decay of this nation.

We have seen the Church sell out to the riches of this world, hijacking the store house of the Lord for His people and used it for personal gain and the building of man made enterprises. If the apostles were to return today and enter into the average Church they wouldn’t even know what it was and more than likely would see them as temples built for the honoring of pagan gods. If Jesus were to enter the average church in America today He would not even be recognized for they have sold out to the world and created a Jesus in the image that they are comfortable serving. I can hear the words of Ezekiel 34:1-25 thundering in the Spirit.

We have seen the Church remain silent in regard to moral issues because she is as dirty as the morally decayed society around her. She cannot speak against abomination of abortion for she has aborted several generations of God’s servants in the name of modern churchanity. She remains silent when prayer is mocked for she has lost the ability to pray with power and authority of Jesus Christ as she bows down to false gods of greed and pride. She cannot speak out against adultery for she herself has had an ongoing adulterous affair with the pleasures of this world. She cannot speak out against the abomination of sexual perversion in society as she herself has become but a harlot – lust and pride are the menu selection of the day. She has even allowed and condoned and in some cased applauded the abomination of the gay & lesbian agenda not only into the Church but has prostituted the pulpits out to them in the name of political correctness and social sensitivity.

We have allowed the cross to be removed from the Gospel message and replaced with a cross-less gospel. We have allowed the beauty of Gods message of grace be replaced with a graceless message that is nothing more than a license to sin. We have seen the gifts of the Church purposed for the Church marketed and sold to the highest payer. We have seen the generosity of faithful servant’s sapped as their gifts of faith are stolen by crooked and perverse shepherds.

We have seen the call of counting the cost removed and replaced with a message of prosperity that is slander the name of Jesus, causing many to stumble and seek the treasures and pleasures of this world over that of Heaven. We have seen the truth about Hell replaced with a false message of a god who will simply allow everyone into Heaven regardless their denying Him.

No, this nation does not need a political restructure nor a civil war, this nation needs a spiritual reformation that will cause the armies of a Heaven to join in as we wage spiritual warfare against the god of this age who has hijacked the faith of this nation. We need a generation of sold out faithful radical Christians who have counted the cost and pledged to Jesus: “ Whatever You desire Lord, for our lives are Yours purchased by Your blood for the glory of Your Name”. We need a reformation of His Church to return it back to His control & Headship. We need to remove the false shepherds and replace them with men of God who are willing to die for their faith and are more interested in building up a treasure chest in heaven, daring not dirty their hands with the treasures of this world.

America needs the rise of a generation marked by their servant hood and vow of holiness that will go to the gallows before ever renouncing their Christ or His Gospel message. We must stop attempting to restore America to what once was and start spending hours, days and weeks on our faces interceding for America that she will be transformed as a nation into the very image that the Father has purposed her to be, that His Holy Name may be glorified thru her to the world.

We must remember at all time that “We wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places”.  (Eph 6:12)

Ultimately what America truthfully needs is a spiritual revolution that births a supernatural Reformation that will birth a new nation that is truly under Gods dominion.  So let us sound the alarm, calling for the Spiritual revolutionist to rise up in a Holy Ghost orchestrated Reformation that will shake the nations as the Name of Jesus is Praised, Glorified and Honored above all else.

Would you describe yourself as totally in love with Jesus Christ? Or do the words halfhearted, lukewarm, and partially committed fit better?

The Bible says to test ourselves, so in the next two emails, I am going to offer you a description of what halfhearted, distracted, partially committed, lukewarm people can look like. As you read these examples, I encourage you to take a searching, honest look at your life. Not who you want to be one of these days, but who you are now and how you are living today.

LUKEWARM PEOPLE attend church fairly regularly. It is what is expected of them, what they believe “good Christians” do, so they go.

“The Lord says: ‘These people come near to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship of me is made up only of rules taught by men'” (Isa. 29:13).

LUKEWARM PEOPLE give money to charity and to the church… as long as it doesn’t impinge on their standard of living. If they have a little extra and it is easy and safe to give, they do so. After all, God loves a cheerful giver, right?

“King David replied to Araunah, ‘No, I insist on paying the full price. I will not take for the LORD what is yours, or sacrifice a burnt offering that costs me nothing'” (1 Chron. 21:24).

“As he looked up, Jesus saw the rich putting their gifts into the temple treasury. He also saw a poor widow put in two very small copper coins. ‘I tell you the truth,’ he said, ‘this poor widow has put in more than all the others. All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on'” (Luke 21:1-4).

LUKEWARM PEOPLE tend to choose what is popular over what is right when they are in conflict. They desire to fit in both at church and outside of church; they care more about what people think of their actions (like church attendance and giving) than what God thinks of their hearts and lives.

“Woe to you when all men speak well of you, for that is how their fathers treated the false prophets” (Luke 6:26).

“I know your deeds; you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead” (Rev. 3:1).

“Everything they do is done for men to see: They make their phylacteries wide and the tassels on their garments long; they love the place of honor at banquets and the most important seats in the synagogues; they love to be greeted in the marketplaces and to have men call them ‘Rabbi'”(Matt. 23:5-7).

LUKEWARM PEOPLE don’t really want to be saved from their sin; they want only to be saved from the penalty of their sin. They don’t genuinely hate sin and aren’t truly sorry for it; they’re merely sorry because God is going to punish them. Lukewarm people don’t really believe that this new life Jesus offers is better than the old sinful one.

“I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full” (John 10:10).

“What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?” (Rom. 6:1-2).

LUKEWARM PEOPLE are moved by stories about people who do radical things for Christ, yet they do not act. They assume such action is for “extreme” Christians, not average ones. Lukewarm people call “radical” what Jesus expected of all His followers.

“Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says” (James 1:22).

“Anyone, then, who knows the good he ought to do and doesn’t do it, sins” (James 4:17).

“What do you think? There was a man who had two sons. He went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work today in the vineyard.’ ‘I will not,’ he answered, but later he changed his mind and went. Then the father went to the other son and said the same thing. He answered, ‘I will, sir,’ but he did not go. Which of the two did what his father wanted? ‘The first,’ they answered” (Matt. 21:28-31).

LUKEWARM PEOPLE rarely share their faith with their neighbors, coworkers, or friends. They do not want to be rejected, nor do they want to make people uncomfortable by talking about private issues like religion.

“Whoever acknowledges me before men, I will also acknowledge him before my Father in heaven. But whoever disowns me before men, I will disown him before my Father in heaven” (Matt. 10:32-33).

LUKEWARM PEOPLE gauge their morality or “goodness” by comparing themselves to the secular world. They feel satisfied that while they aren’t as hard-core for Jesus as so-and-so, they are nowhere as horrible as the guy down the street.

“The Pharisee stood up and prayed about himself: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men–robbers, evildoers, adulterers–or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get'” (Luke 18:11-12).

LUKEWARM PEOPLE say they love Jesus, and He is, indeed, a part of their lives. But only a part. They give Him a section of their time, their money, and their thoughts, but He isn’t allowed to control their lives.

“As they were walking along the road, a man said to him, ‘I will follow you wherever you go.’ Jesus replied, ‘Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.’ He said to another man, ‘Follow me.’ But the man replied, ‘Lord, first let me go and bury my father.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.’ Still another said, ‘I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say good-by to my family.’ Jesus replied, ‘No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God'” (Luke 9:57-62).

LUKEWARM PEOPLE love God, but they do not love Him with all their heart, soul, and strength. They would be quick to assure you that they try to love God that much, but that sort of total devotion isn’t really possible for the average person; it’s only for pastors and missionaries and radicals.

“Jesus replied: ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment” (Matt. 22:37-38).

LUKEWARM PEOPLE love others but do not seek to love others as much as they love themselves. Their love of others is typically focused on those who love them in return, like family, friends, and other people they know and connect with. There is little love left over for those who cannot love them back, much less for those who intentionally slight them, whose kids are better athletes than theirs, or with whom conversations are awkward or uncomfortable. Their love is highly conditional and very selective, and generally comes with strings attached.

“You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that?” (Matt. 5:43-47).

“Then Jesus said to his host, ‘When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid. But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous'” (Luke 14:12-14).

LUKEWARM PEOPLE will serve God and others, but there are limits to how far they will go or how much time, money, and energy they are willing to give.

“All these [commandments] I have kept since I was a boy,’ he said. When Jesus heard this, he said to him, ‘You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.’ When he heard this, he became very sad, because he was a man of great wealth. Jesus looked at him and said, ‘How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God! Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God'” (Luke 18:21-25).

LUKEWARM PEOPLE think about life on earth much more often than eternity in heaven. Daily life is mostly focused on today’s to-do list, this week’s schedule, and next month’s vacation. Rarely, if ever, do they intently consider the life to come. Regarding this, C. S. Lewis writes, “If you read history you will find that the Christians who did most for the present world were precisely those who thought most of the next. It is since Christians have largely ceased to think of the other world that they have become so ineffective in this.”

“For, as I have often told you before and now say again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is on earthly things. But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ” (Phil. 3:18-20).

“Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things” (Col. 3:2).

Reflection Questions

  2. What do you think is the long-term effect of being “lukewarm” in your spiritual life? What’s the effect on you, on your family, on your church community?
  3. Have you ever gone through a period of lukewarm-ness, but regained your zeal? What needs to happen in order for a lukewarm believer to catch fire again?

As in Paul’s day, many today flock to listen to false grace teachers who will tell them what they want to hear, just as Paul predicted:

For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires; and will turn away their ears from the truth, and will turn aside to myths (2 Tim. 4:3-4).

Clearly, the time which Paul said will come has arrived. People naturally love to hear the message of God’s wonderful love and grace, how their sin has been dealt with by Jesus, how salvation is a free gift, and how it is received by faith and not earned by works, all of which are true. But this is where God’s grace begins to be modified.

Today we are told that repentance is only a change of mind that may result in no change of actions. People can believe in Jesus and continue practicing sin. They can be born again and never give any outward indication of the Holy Spirit’s indwelling. Christians can be adulterers and fornicators, and we certainly don’t want to judge them because we don’t know their hearts. Those who maintain that heaven is only for the holy are legalists. Faith without works can save. Those who don’t do God’s will are still heaven-bound as long as they’ve made a verbal profession of faith in Christ. If a person has faith for one minute of his life, he is eternally secure, regardless of whether he abandons his faith, becomes an atheist, and returns to a life of immorality. Many true Christians are indistinguishable from non-Christians, placed in a special category of believers called “carnal Christians.”

These and many lies like them are being propagated to millions of unsuspecting people. Consider the following quotations from some of the most popular teachers in the church today, people whose names are household words in modern Christian circles:

Shortly after that campaign was held, the evangelist that led him to Christ defected from the faith. His family was broken apart. He wandered across the United States like an animal, finally died a drunkard in the gutter of South Chicago….If you have trusted the Lord Jesus Christ as your Savior, you are still a child of God. You may deny Him, but He will never deny you.

Is this true? Jesus said, “But whoever shall deny Me before men, I will also deny him before My Father who is in heaven” (Matt. 10:33). Additionally, Paul wrote that no drunkard will inherit God’s kingdom (see 1 Cor. 6:9-10).

We are saved because at a moment in time we expressed faith in our enduring Lord….Even if a believer for all practical purposes becomes an unbeliever, his salvation is not in jeopardy.

Are we eternally secure in our salvation if we believe for just “a moment in time”? Is that what Jesus meant for us to believe when He said, “He who has believed…shall be saved” (Mark 16:16)? If so, then we must also conclude that if we disbelieve for a moment in time, then our damnation is eternally sealed, because Jesus went on to say, “He who has disbelieved shall be condemned” (Mark 16:16).

This same popular grace teacher, desperate to mold Scripture to accommodate his theology, has actually turned hell into heaven:

Where is this place represented by the “outer darkness” in Jesus’ parables? To be in the “outer darkness” is to be in the kingdom of God but outside the circle of men and women whose faithfulness on this earth earned them a special rank or position of authority.

The “outer darkness” represents not so much an actual place as it does a sphere of influence and privilege. It is not a geographical area in the kingdom where certain men and women are consigned to stay. It is simply a figure of speech describing their low rank or status in God’s kingdom (emphasis his).

Amazingly, this teacher also wants us to believe that “gnashing of teeth”….“does not symbolize pain as many have thought.” Rather, it is symbolic for the frustration unfaithful believers will feel in heaven when they realize the rewards they could have earned by earthly obedience:

Just as those who are found faithful will rejoice, so those who suffer loss will weep. As some are celebrated for their faithfulness, others will gnash their teeth in frustration over their own short-sightedness and greed.

We do not know how long this time of rejoicing and sorrow will last. Those whose works are burned will not weep and gnash their teeth for eternity.

Is this all true? When Jesus spoke of the “outer darkness,” was He speaking of a place in heaven where unfaithful and greedy Christians will temporarily weep and gnash their teeth out of regret for the rewards they could have earned for themselves? For the obvious answer, see Matt. 8:10-12; 13:24-30, 36-43; 24:42-51; 25:14-30; Luke 13:22-28. And will there be any greedy people in heaven? See 1 Cor. 6:9-10; Eph. 5:3-6.

It is amazing how far some teachers will go to make allowance for Christians to practice grievous sins and still make it into heaven. In reference to Paul’s warning that those who practice the works of the flesh will not inherit the kingdom of God, one popular radio preacher says:

Inheriting the kingdom has to deal with the bonuses that you get in the kingdom. It’s not the same as entering the kingdom. So unless you distinguish between inheriting and entering, you’ll think you’re not gonna get in the kingdom because of these problems [notice he doesn’t even call them sins]. But you can lose benefits from the kingdom because of them.

Is this true? Compare 1 Cor. 6:9-10 with 1 Cor. 15:50-54 and Jesus’ words in Matt. 25:34-41.

While Jesus and Paul both stated that adulterers and fornicators will not gain heaven, one very influential television minister says:

But Christians may still lose rewards in heaven. Indeed, we can only wonder what some Christians will feel like and experience on that day when they lose those heavenly rewards because of the spiritually numbing and other consequences of fornication or adultery while on earth. It will certainly be an infinitely poor exchange—losing eternal rewards in heaven for a few fleeting moments of sexual pleasure on earth (emphasis added).

Another long-standing radio minister is asked by a listener:

Q. I thought that I was born again when I was fifteen years old. I felt happy and secure in Christ. But over time, sin surely crept in, and I went the downward path. Three marriages, adultery, drinking. Was I born again?

A. The very fact that you were disturbed indicates to me that when you say you were born again at fifteen, you are accurate.

Is the test of authentic salvation a person’s guilt? See Romans 2:14-15 for the answer. Are adulterers and drunkards saved? I think you know the answer to that by now.

I was reading a magazine article in a Christian Magazine.  This article was discussing the question– What is most important for a Christians to possess a godly character or the anointing of God?

Immediately I felt the Holy Spirit rise up within me and say, “You must have both.  You must possess godly character and the anointing.” “The anointing with no godly character brings shame to the Body of Christ.”  “There has been too many who have gone forth ministering in the Body of Christ who have not possessed both–a godly character and the anointing of God.”  “You must have both.”  “It is not meant to be one without the other.”

Saul

In 1Samuel 10:1 Samuel anointed Saul as ruler over Israel.

1Samuel 10:20-22 Thus Samuel brought all the tribes of Israel near, and the tribe of Benjamin was taken by lot. 21 Then he brought the tribe of Benjamin near by its families, and the Matrite family was taken. And Saul the son of Kish was taken; but when they looked for him, he could not be found. 22 Therefore they inquired further of the LORD, “Has the man come here yet?” So the LORD said, “Behold, he is hiding himself by the baggage.”

Saul began walking in his position as the anointed of God with the godly character trait of humbleness.  He was hiding himself by the baggage.

Saul already knew from the Lord that it was he who was anointed as King and ruler of Israel.   He was not exalting himself among the people and yelling “It’s me!!  I’m the anointed one!!!”  “Look over here at me; I’m the anointed one of God!!”  Saul humbly hid himself among the baggage.

Saul did not continue to walk in a godly character.  In 1 Samuel 13: 8-9 we find King Saul offering a burnt offering.  This violated what God had commanded him to do.  In 1Samuel 13:13 Samuel tells Saul because of his disobedience that the Lord had sought out another to appoint as ruler over His people.

In 1Samuel 15:9-11 we find Saul once again disobey God.  God spoke to Samuel that He regretted making Saul king because he had turned away from following Him and had not carried out His commands.  In 1Samuel 15:26 Samuel tells Saul that the Lord has rejected him from being king over Israel.

In 1Samuel 16:14 we find the last state of Saul — the Spirit of the LORD had departed from Saul.

Saul did not continue to walk in a godly character.  Because of his lack of possessing a godly character along with the anointing, God removed the One who anointed Saul – God removed the Holy Spirit from him.

Saul remained the one who was anointed to the position and title (we know this because David refers to Saul as “the anointed of God”), but the presence of the Holy Spirit was removed from him.  Saul kept his position and title until his death, the Holy Spirit’s presence which had dwelled with him was removed

We see this today in the Body of Christ.  There are those who because of faulty and flawed characters have had the presence of the Holy Spirit removed from them, their ministries and their churches.  They continue on in position and in a title but the Holy Spirit’s presence has been removed from them.

We see these (pastor, teacher, prophet, apostle and evangelist) still able to operate in their spiritual gift but the Holy Spirit’s presence has been removed from them.

God’s Word says that his gifts are given without repentance in Rom 11:29.

Romans 11:29 (KJV) For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance.

The Word in the Greek for repentance means IRREVOCABLE.

Irrevocable according to the dictionary means: not to be revoked or recalled; unable to be repealed or annulled;

Do you see that Saul’s call was irrevocable—he still continued on in the title and position of king until his death?   Even as he retained the call the dwelling presence of the Holy Spirit was removed from him.

Do you see that many in church today still operate in their spiritual gifts but the dwelling presence of the Holy Spirit has been removed from them?

David had seen Saul without the presence of the Holy Spirit dwelling with him.  I believe that is why David cried out to God “do not remove the Holy Spirit from me.”  He had seen the terrible state that it was to be in if you did not have the presence of the Holy Spirit in your life.  David did not want to walk in title and position without the presence of the Holy Spirit.  I believe that is why he cried out to God “don’t remove the Holy Spirit from me.”

What a terrible position it truly is even this day – to walk in the spiritual gifts but have not the presence of the Holy Spirit in your life.

I personally sat under and served on staff with a pastor whom I knew lied and gossiped about his people. I often heard him at staff meetings speak critically, harshly and in ridicule of the people in this congregation.

The Word of God says we shall be known by our fruit.

Matthew 7:16-17 “You will know them by their fruits. Grapes are not gathered from thorn bushes nor figs from thistles, are they? 17 “So every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad
tree bears bad fruit.

I was looking at the wrong fruit!!!  I was looking at the fruit of the spiritual gifts being in operation in this pastor’s life.  I was not looking at the fruit of his character that was pouring out of his heart. I mistakenly thought the fruit of the spiritual gift in operation through him at the altar verified the presence of the Holy Spirit and the approval of God upon this pastor.

As we saw with Saul, the gifts and call is irrevocable but the presence of the Holy Spirit can be and is removed.  Seeing spiritual gifts in operation does not verify that God’s presence is upon someone or that God has set His approval upon them.

Matthew 7:20-23 “So then, you will know them by their fruits. 21  “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter. 22 “Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’ 23 “And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; DEPART FROM ME, YOU WHO PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS.’

God is saying clearly in this scripture that we are not to look upon the fruit of the spiritual gift operating in someone’s life.  They had these gifts in operation but God calls them “those who practice lawlessness.”  These did not walk in godly character and because they did not the presence of the Holy Spirit was taken from them.  How do I know this??

Because the Word says that He does not know them.  God knows all who have His Holy Spirit and the Holy Spirit’s presence with them.

God is clearly saying we are to look for the fruit of a godly character.  Where there is the fruit of a godly character there will be also be the anointing of God.

God is clearly saying our fruit must be the fruit of a godly character!!!  God is clearly saying when we manifest the fruit of a godly character we will possess His anointing which comes through the dwelling presence of the Holy Spirit.

I understand now what the Holy Spirit meant when He said, “You can’t have one without the other.”  If you walk in the fruit of godly character you will possess the anointing through the dwelling presence of the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit said “Godly Character without the anointing has no power to change lives.”

I understand now what the Holy Spirit was saying.  The anointing is the presence of the Spirit in our lives and without the presence of the Spirit you do not have the effectual effective working power to see lives changed.  I understand now that when I walk in a godly character and manifest the fruit of that character, His Holy Spirit anointing will also be manifested in my life.

We are not to have one without the other!!!

David

In 1 Samuel 16: 1-13 we have the story of David’s anointing as king over Israel.  David is picked by God from among his brothers and anointed as king.

1Samuel 16:13  Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon David from that day forward. And Samuel arose and went to Ramah.

When David was anointed as king of Israel the Holy Spirit came upon him mightily.  David now possessed the anointing of the Lord.  The presence of the Holy Spirit was with David from that day forward.  He went forth from that day to work mighty exploits in the name of the Lord; he did so through the presence of the Holy Spirit which was with Him.

We know from scripture that both Saul and David sinned against the Lord.  The Holy Spirit was not removed from David as He had been from Saul because David possessed the godly character of a repentant heart.  Saul when confronted with his sin made excuses and blamed others for his sin.  He did not take responsibility for his actions.  He did not come to true repentance.  He did not come to a repentance that was according to the will of God that leads to salvation.

2Corinthians 7:10  For the sorrow that is according to the will of God produces a repentance without regret, leading to salvation, but the sorrow of the world produces death.

David when confronted with his sin repented.  David was not a man after God’s own heart because he was sin free.  David was a man after God’s own heart because he came to repentance according to the will of God that led to salvation.  David walked in godly character and he manifested the good fruit of repentance.

The Holy Spirit and His presence remained with David.  David possessed both the qualities of a godly character and the anointing of the Lord.

When we sin we must have the godly character of repentance.  We must repent as David – without excuse, without blaming others for our sin, and by taking responsibility for our actions.  We must turn from our sin and turn to God.  We must move forward by bearing good fruit in keeping with our repentance.

Matthew 3:8 “Therefore bear fruit in keeping with repentance;

Luke 3:8 “Therefore bear fruits in keeping with repentance …

Act 26:20  but kept declaring both to those of Damascus first, and also at Jerusalem and then throughout all the region of Judea, and even to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, performing deeds appropriate to repentance.

We are to perform deeds/ bear good fruit appropriate to repentance.

Where there is the fruit of a godly character there will be also be the anointing of God.

Balaam

Balaam walked with a faulty and flawed character.  He is an example of many in the body of Christ today who function in a title and position but possess a faulty and flawed character.

We find the story of Balaam in Numbers 22 – 25.  Balak the king of Moab sent the elders of his nation to Balaam with money to pay for his service of cursing Israel.  God told Balaam to not go with them, for He, God, has blessed Israel.  Balaam speaks correctly to the king’s emissaries that God has refused to let him go with them.

The king of Moab then sends to Balaam more numerous and more distinguished leaders with a promise of honoring him richly.

Here is where we begin to see the flaw in the character of Balaam.  He knew God’s word to him that he was not to go and that Israel was not to be cursed for He, God, had blessed them.  The character flaw we find in Balaam is love of honor and love of riches!!!

2Peter 2:15 forsaking the right way, they have gone astray, having followed the way of Balaam, the son of Beor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness;

Balaam speaks three times the words God tells him to speak over the people Israel.

Numbers 23:5 says God put a word in Balaam’s mouth and Numbers 23: 16 says the Lord put a word in Balaam’s mouth.  We find the last time Balaam speaks for the king of Moab to be different.

Numbers 24:1-2  When Balaam saw that it pleased the LORD to bless Israel, he did not go as at other times to seek omens but he set his face toward the wilderness. 2  And Balaam lifted up his eyes and saw Israel camping tribe by tribe; and the Spirit of God came upon him.

I believe the two times Balaam spoke before that he was speaking out of his gift.  He did not speak these words by the anointing, which is the presence of the Holy Spirit with him.

The Holy Spirit’s presence was not with him until this third time and he did not seek omen as he had at the other times.

Balaam mixed the worship of God with pagan worship!!  The presence of the Holy Spirit was not with him until he did not seek to hear through omens.  Not only did Balaam possess the flawed character of love of honor and money, he also possessed the flawed character of mixing the worship of God with pagan worship.  His heart was not totally Gods!!

We can not be as Balaam and mix the worship of God.  We must worship Him and Him alone.  We must not have this flawed character.  Our hearts must totally belong to God andto Him alone.

We are going to look at the next example of Balaam’s actions that we often see in the church today.  He spoke the right words but his actions did not line up with those words!!!

Numbers 24:13-14 ‘Though Balak were to give me his house full of silver and gold, I could not do anything contrary to the command of the LORD, either good or bad, of my own accord. What the LORD speaks, that I will speak’? 14 “And now, behold, I am going to my people; come, and I will advise you what this people will do to your people in the days to come.”

What did Balaam advise the King of Moab?  First, Balaam prophesied the future of Israel to the King of Moab.  A deeper look at scripture will tell us the rest of Balaam’s advise to the king.

Numbers 25:1-3 While Israel remained at Shittim, the people began to play the harlot with the daughters of Moab. 2 For they invited the people to the sacrifices of their gods, and the people ate and bowed down to their gods. 3 So Israel joined themselves to Baal of Peor, and the LORD was angry against Israel.

Num 31:16 “Behold, these caused the sons of Israel, through the counsel of Balaam, to trespass against the LORD in the matter of Peor, so the plague was among the congregation of the LORD.

Revelation 2:14  ‘But I have a few things against you, because you have there some who hold the teaching of Balaam, who kept teaching Balak to put a stumbling block before the sons of Israel, to eat things sacrificed to idols and to commit acts of immorality.

Balaam spoke the right words from his mouth that made him sound as if he was totally dedicated to God.  His actions of teaching Balak the king of Moab how to put a stumbling block before the sons of Israel did not line up with his words of devotion to God.

Balaam advised Balak in the way only way Israel could be cursed and destroyed!!  He knew that idol worship/departing from serving God and God alone was the only way Israel would be cursed and destroyed.  Balaam advised Balak to send in the women of his nation who would then entice and lead the men of Israel into idol worship.

It is the same in the church today, many speak what is right in front of others – where they are seen, but the actions of their lives do not line up with their words.  They speak as if they have great godly character but their actions/ their true character shows that they do not.

They are as Balaam—their lives do not line up with their words.  These do not possess a godly character and the anointing, the presence of the Holy Spirit is not with them.

Philippians 2:21 For they all seek after their own interests, not those of Christ Jesus.

Many in the church today are as Balaam, seeking after their own interests of wealth, of honor, or fame and are not seeking after the interests of Christ.

Philippians 1:15-17  Some, to be sure, are preaching Christ even from envy and strife, but some also from good will; 16  the latter do it out of love, knowing that I am appointed for the defense of the gospel; 17  the former proclaim Christ out of selfish ambition rather than from pure motives, thinking to cause me distress in my imprisonment.

Philippians 2:3 Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit…

Some in the church today preach Christ out of selfish ambitions—what is in it for them!!!

They do not preach Christ out of pure motives.  They preach Christ out of the motive of what will it bring to them.  They will not go where they do not receive a large honorarium, they will not go where there is not a large crowd who will give honor to them—they are too busy and important to serve the small congregations.   They preach Christ with the impure motive of “what is in it for them!!!”  These do not walk in godly character and are in danger of losing the anointing and the presence of the Holy Spirit.

We are commanded to not operate as these.

Pharisees

The Pharisees had “religion” they did not possess godly character.  Because they lacked godly character they did not have the anointing or the presence of the Holy Spirit with them.

We must not confuse having “religion” with possessing a godly character.  God does not see them as the same.  Jesus called the Pharisees who had “religion” a brood of vipers.  Jesus called them evil.  Jesus told them they were of their father, satan!!!  We must not confuse having “religion” with possessing a godly character and the anointing of God.

Matthew12:34-35 “You brood of vipers, how can you, being evil, speak what is good? For the mouth speaks out of that which fills the heart. 35  “The good man brings out of his good treasure what is good; and the evil man brings out of his evil treasure what is evil.

Good fruit comes forth from one who has godly character.  Good fruit does not come forth out of “religion” it alone comes forth from one who walks in a godly character.  The presence and the anointing of the Holy Spirit are present with one who walks in a godly character.

John 8:44 “You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

Pharisees were a sect of self-righteous and zealous Jews.  They were zealous for their interpretation of the law and for their traditions.  Jesus corrected them for their traditions nullifying the Word of God.

Matthew 15:3 And He answered and said to them, “Why do you yourselves transgress the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition?

Matthew 15:9 ‘BUT IN VAIN DO THEY WORSHIP ME, TEACHING AS DOCTRINES THE PRECEPTS OF MEN.'”

Mark 7:8 -9 “Neglecting the commandment of God, you hold to the tradition of men.” 9 He was also saying to them, “You are experts at setting aside the commandment of God in order to keep your tradition.

Mark 7:13 thus invalidating the word of God by your tradition which you have handed down; and you do many things such as that.”

In the church today there are those who set aside the commandment of God in order to keep their tradition, their religion.  Their “religion” and “tradition” has become more important to them than having the presence of the Holy Spirit and His anointing with them!!!

The Pharisees through their interpretation of the law and traditions laid heavy burdens upon men.  They also by their religion prevented others from finding liberty and freedom. I want you to know that religion always does this – it keeps others in the same bondage they are in – it refuses to allow others to be set free.

Matthew 23:2-4 saying: “The scribes and the Pharisees have seated themselves in the chair of Moses; 3  therefore all that they tell you, do and observe, but do not do according to their deeds; for they say things and do not do them. 4  “They tie up heavy burdens and lay them on men’s shoulders, but they themselves are unwilling to move them with so much as a finger.

Matthew 23:13  “But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you shut off the kingdom of heaven from people; for you do not enter in yourselves, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in.

Religion always makes “carbon copies” of those who follow in its way.  There is no freedom in religion.

Matthew 23:15  “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you travel around on sea and land to make one proselyte; and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of hell as yourselves.

Jesus came to set us free from religion and all its traditions!!!  Religion is devoid of the presence of the Holy Spirit and His anointing.

The Pharisees loved honor and glory to be given to them from men.  The Pharisees were full of the spirit of pride.  They esteemed themselves above all others.  The Pharisees did all their deeds to be noticed by men, not out of a heart of compassion of love for the people.  They did their deeds for the “good report” it would bring them.  Many in the body of Christ do the same today.

Matthew 23: 5-7 “But they do all their deeds to be noticed by men; for they broaden their phylacteries and lengthen the tassels of their garments. 6 “They love the place of honor at banquets and the chief seats in the synagogues, 7  and respectful greetings in the market places, and being called Rabbi by men.

Matthew 23:14 [“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you devour widows’ houses, and for a pretense you make long prayers; therefore you will receive greater condemnation.]

Jesus rebuked the Pharisees for their “religion” and their appearance of righteousness when they did not possess righteousness or a godly character.

Matthew 23:23 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cummin, and have neglected the weightier provisions of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness; but these are the things you should have done without neglecting the others.

Matthew 23:25 -28 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside they are full of robbery and self-indulgence. 26 “You blind Pharisee, first clean the inside of the cup and of the dish, so that the outside of it may become clean also. 27 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which on the outside appear beautiful, but inside they are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness. 28 “So you, too, outwardly appear righteous to men, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

Matthew 23:33 “You serpents, you brood of vipers, how will you escape the sentence of hell?

The Pharisees had “religion” they did not have godly character.  The Pharisees were devoid of the presence and the anointing of the Holy Spirit and if they remained in this state would not be able to escape the sentence of hell.

The Holy Spirit began this discourse with the words “We as Christians must have both a godly character with the anointing.” “We are not to have one without the other.”  We have learned we walk must in a godly character, then the anointing and the presence of the Holy Spirit will be with us.

Let us as the people of God who seek to be His anointed in the earth examine our walks and our characters this day.

Let us persevere to walk with a godly character and the anointing which is the presence of the Holy Spirit with us.

Definition of Critical – Inclined to find fault, or to judge with severity

Quote: It is impossible to help anybody after they have developed a critical spirit.

Son of man, these men have set up idols in their hearts and put wicked stumbling blocks before their faces. Should I let them inquire of me at all? (Ezek 14:3)

One of the quickest ways to shut up the Heavens over ones life and stop receiving the blessings of God is to allow entrance of a critical spirit. Even worse are those who have welcomed this spirit in and actually made room in their hearts for it to stay. Sadly the room was made via the eviction of the love of God from their lives, for they now are worshiping the spirit of the deceiver, the accuser of the saints, Satan himself.

 Now He was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath.  And behold, there was a woman who had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bent over and could in no way raise herself up. But when Jesus saw her, He called her to Him and said to her, “Woman, you are loosed from your infirmity.” And He laid His hands on her, and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God. But the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath; and he said to the crowd, “There are six days on which men ought to work; therefore come and be healed on them, and not on the Sabbath day.”

 The Lord then answered him and said, “Hypocrite![a] Does not each one of you on the Sabbath loose his ox or donkey from the stall, and lead it away to water it?  So ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has bound—think of it—for eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath?”  And when He said these things, all His adversaries were put to shame; and all the multitude rejoiced for all the glorious things that were done by Him. (Luke 13:10-17)

I. The Causes of a Critical Spirit

A. An Unhealthy Appreciation of Self – vs. 14 the ruler of the synagogue

  • Romans 12:3  For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.

A critic is one that considers themselves an authority or a master of a subject which qualifies them to point out the good and the bad.  Their own knowledge and expertise is their authority; not a defined standard.

Webster’s 1828 Dictionary: A person skilled in judging of the merit of literary works; one who is able to discern and distinguish the beauties and faults of writing. In a more general sense, a person skilled in judging with propriety of any combination of objects, or of any work of art; and particularly of what are denominated the Fine Arts. A critic is one who, from experience, knowledge, habit or taste, can perceive the difference between propriety and impropriety, in objects or works presented to his view; between the natural and unnatural; the high and the low, or lofty and mean; the congruous and incongruous; the correct and incorrect, according to the established rules of the art.

We ought to wake up every morning singing, “I’m not worthy to be here, but THANK GOD I belong!”

B. An Unbiblical Adherence to a System – vs. 14

Where did this rule come from? Where did he come up with this?? You can only be healed on certain days?

  • Colossians 2:8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.

Truth is, he made this rule up.  Since he had never had a person healed in his synagogue on a sabbath, surely God cannot be in it!

A critical spirit will come when you are always thinking you know what OUGHT to be done when the truth is, you don’t have a clue!

Here he was telling people when they OUGHT to come get healed, and he had never healed anybody!  In essence, He was limiting God – trying to cram God in his own little test tube!!

He was an expert in a system that didn’t even exist except in his own mind.

C. An Unreasonable Attitude toward the Sovereignty of God – vs. 14

NOTE: He was upset with what God did, so he took it out on the people.

God can do what He wants to, when He wants to, however He wants to.  Deal with it!

He mistook GOD working for MAN working.  (there are six days in which men ought to work)  It wasn’t man working – it was GOD.

You say – “I just don’t understand it.”  If you understood everything, you’d be God.

His ways are past finding out.

  • Romans 11:33 O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!

Keep your mind open to this possibility: God might work in a way you never thought possible or have never seen before.  God might use somebody you didn’t think He could, He might save somebody you never thought could be saved.  He might manifest Himself in a manner that you’ve never seen before.  He might be trying to teach you something!  Quit criticizing and learn!!!

II. The Curses of a Critical Spirit

A. It will Belittle the Positive – vs. 14 (because that Jesus had healed…)

Positive things such as:

  1. Jesus is in the midst – vs. 10 (theirs wasn’t the only synagogue; they were honored)
  2. Jesus was teaching them things – vs. 10 (many people never learn anything or grow)
  3. There were people in the place that were there in spite of their infirmities – praise God!
  4. Jesus was still calling hurting people to himself – vs. 12 that’s a blessing!
  5. Jesus was still laying his hands on people and touching people – vs. 13
  6. People were still getting straightened out after years of being wrong – vs. 13
  7. New converts were praising and glorifying God – vs. 13

Did any of this matter?  NO!!  The man with the critical spirit saw NONE of the positive things

B. It will Badger the People – vs. 14 …and he said unto the people…

Interesting NOTE: We find no record that this ruler of the synagogue ever badgered or criticized this woman UNTIL she got STRAIGHT!

For 18 years, she had been in a mess, and he never helped her.

Now she’s right with God and he gets mad!

If somebody bothers you, just imagine how bad it would be if you’d known them before they met Jesus!

C. It will Buck the Praising – vs. 13, 14 they glorified; he answered with indignation

  • A critical spirit will cause you to pout when others are praising.
  • A critical spirit will make you mad when others are magnifying.
  • A critical spirit will make you tense when others are testifying.
  • A critical spirit will cause you to hinder people when God is trying to help people.
  • A critical spirit will cause people to ask “What’s wrong with him or her?”

Do excited Christians get on your nerves?

Do people that brag on the Lord and the church and their pastor irritate you?  You’re critical!

D. It will Broadcast the Poison – in vs. 10, Jesus is teaching; where is the ruler then?

He let EVERYBODY know where he stood on the subject.  Notice that nobody asked him.

Watch out for this line – “Well, if you ask me…”  Nobody will.  They don’t care as much about what you think as you do!

Critical spirits are not happy until they’ve poisoned everybody they meet with their criticism.

Question: Do the excited, testifying, praising Christians stay excited, keep testifying and are they still praising after you’re done with them?

Do you find yourself more comfortable around those that are uncomfortable?

  • Ever noticed that the people that are most critical are the one’s that’s not doing anything?
  • Ever heard a soul winner complain about too many visitors?
  • Ever heard a bus worker complain about the mess that bus kids make?
  • Ever heard a grass cutter complain about how the grass was cut?
  • Ever heard a friendly hand shaker complain about not getting their hand shaken?
  • Ever heard a shouter and testifier complain about a service being dead?
  • Ever heard a servant criticize another servant’s way of doing something?
  • Ever noticed that the one’s that never bring anybody to church can tell you how it’s done?

III. The Cures for a Critical Spirit

A. Admit your Hypocrisy – vs. 15 “Thou hypocrite!”

Most of the things that people criticize in others are things they are guilty of themselves.

  • Illustration: The beam and the mote in the eye.
  • Start judging people by the same standard you judge yourself!  You’ll be more longsuffering.

Even if you had ALL YOUR DUCKS in a row and all your own personal issues resolved, you still wouldn’t have the right to have a critical spirit, but your own shortcomings and faults and failures make your critical spirit even that much more hypocritical!

B. Be Ashamed that your Heart is not 100% right with God – vs. 16, 17

God’s will was not their will.  Their will always will contradict what God wants to do.

God’s will was all about this woman’s problem getting healed.

The critic’s will was all about his position being honored.

God’s was concerned about sinners; they were preoccupied with standards.

C. Acknowledge all the glorious things that are being done by Him – vs. 17

Stop looking for the negative and the problems and start seeing what God is doing.

There’s many faults and failures in the lives of everybody you come in contact with.

About thirty years ago, my close friend and colleague, Archie Parrish, who at that time led the Evangelism Explosion (EE) program in Fort Lauderdale, came to me with a request. He indicated that on the thousands of evangelistic visits the EE teams made, they kept a record of responses people made to discussions of the gospel. They collated the most frequent questions and objections people raised about the Christian faith and grouped these inquiries or objections into the ten most frequently encountered. Dr. Parrish asked if I would write a book answering those objections for evangelists to use in their outreach. That effort resulted in my book Objections Answered, now called Reason to Believe. Among the top ten objections raised was the objection that the church is filled with hypocrites. At that point in time, Dr. D. James Kennedy responded to this objection by replying, “Well, there’s always room for one more.” He cautioned people that if they found a perfect church, they ought not to join it, since that would ruin it.

The term hypocrite came from the world of Greek drama. It was used to describe the masks that the players used to dramatize certain roles. Even today, the theatre is symbolized by the twin masks of comedy and tragedy. In antiquity, certain players played more than one role, and they indicated their role by holding a mask in front of their face. That’s the origin of the concept of hypocrisy.

But the charge that the church is full of hypocrites is manifestly false. Though no Christian achieves the full measure of sanctification in this life, that we all struggle with ongoing sin does not justly yield the verdict of hypocrisy. A hypocrite is someone who does things he claims he does not do. Outside observers of the Christian church see people who profess to be Christians and observe that they sin. Since they see sin in the lives of Christians, they rush to the judgment that therefore these people are hypocrites. If a person claims to be without sin and then demonstrates sin, surely that person is a hypocrite. But for a Christian simply to demonstrate that he is a sinner does not convict him of hypocrisy.

The inverted logic goes something like this: All hypocrites are sinners. John is a sinner; therefore, John is a hypocrite. Anyone who knows the laws of logic knows that this syllogism is not valid. If we would simply change the charge from “the church is full of hypocrites” to “the church is full of sinners,” we would be quick to plead guilty. The church is the only institution I know of that requires an admission of being a sinner in order to be a member. The church is filled with sinners because the church is the place where sinners who confess their sins come to find redemption from their sins. So in this sense, simply because the church is filled with sinners does not justify the conclusion that the church is filled with hypocrites. Again, all hypocrisy is sin, but not all sin is the sin of hypocrisy.

When we look at the problem of hypocrisy in the New Testament era, we see it most clearly displayed in the lives of those who claimed to be the most righteous. The Pharisees were a group of people who by definition saw themselves as separated from the normal sinfulness of the masses. They began well, seeking a life of devoted godliness and submission to the law of God. However, when their behavior failed to reach their ideals, they began to engage in pretense. They pretended they were more righteous than they were. They gave an outward facade of righteousness, which merely served to conceal a radical corruption in their lives.

Though the church is not filled with hypocrites, there is no denying that hypocrisy is a sin that is not limited or restricted to New Testament Pharisees. It is a sin with which Christians must grapple. A high standard of spiritual and righteous behavior has been set for the church. We often are embarrassed by our failures to reach these high goals and are inclined to pretend that we have reached a higher plateau of righteousness than we’ve actually attained. When we do that, we put on the mask of the hypocrite and come under the judgment of God for that particular sin. When we find ourselves enmeshed in this type of pretense, an alarm bell should go off in our brains that we need to rush back to the cross and to Christ and to understand where our true righteousness resides. We have to find in Christ, not a mask that conceals our face, but an entire wardrobe of clothing, which is His righteousness. Indeed, it is only under the guise of the righteousness of Christ, received by faith, that any of us can ever have a hope of standing before a holy God. To wear the garments of Christ in faith is not an act of hypocrisy. It is an act of redemption.

Has the Church been sold back to slavery?

We live in a day when slavery has surpassed any other generation along with that we are faced with imprisoning vices on all sides. Has the Church grown powerless or has it in a large part sold out to the customs of this world?

We must, as radical Christians realize that “Though worldly cultures and customs are apt to change with each generation the culture and customs of the Kingdom of God are eternal!

There appears to be a war within the very House of God, the lines have been drawn and the gulf is getting larger and larger. The liberal Christians [Those accustomed to feeding the flesh] have drawn a line called legalism and regretfully many good intentioned Christians have taking a stance that any social justice is outside of their calling.

For a number of generations the Church has remained silent on subjects that it should have released the roar of Heaven over. Today we see human trafficking happening right here in the USA and the Church to a large part remains silent

Why? Has the Church become ruled by a King other than our Christ? Has in it in its attempts to avoid taxes sold out its sovereignty to the Government of this land?  And in doing so has it sold its authority and power to that of the rule of mere men?

Immorality indorsed by national leaders!

When we see young ladies seated before the government of this world proclaiming a life of sexual immorality many are more outraged that people would question her life style rather than the fact that she is living a immoral life and expects others to pay for it.

We have the leader of this nation saying she should be proud. The very same leader who stated if his daughters had a “mistake”, he would not expect them to live with that mistake, rather that they should have an abortion! Since when is a creation of God labeled a “mistake?

This nation voted in the last presidential election with their first gripped about their wallets, while seated upon their morals and hide the Bible and any sense of Christian values in the closet. Saul this nation wanted, and Saul the Lord has giving this nation. And many Church leaders in this nation not only endorsed this mane, they proclaimed him as the hope of this nations future!!!

What has happened to America and especially the American Church (Maybe that is the problem ,it is the American Church and not Christ’s Church).

Today sexual immorality has become a large scale erosion of the character of men and women within the Church it self along with greed and selfish ambition.

We have high profile pastors such as Paula White and Eddie Long who can divorce their husbands and wives and still be promoted as good, ethical, moral, holy and righteous Church leaders by the Main Stream Christian circles.  We have pastors committing horrendous sexual acts and paying off their accusers and the stories swept under the carper. We have high profile pastors being brought up on corruption and tax evasion charges, yet told this is part of the persecution of the saints!

What this is a corrupted generation of leadership at its best and they are trying to hide under the guise of holiness and proclamations of self induced persecution because they have not only broken the laws of the land, they have broken the very laws of a Holy God!!

We can see that 1Timothy 6 states a clear picture of our day;

A godly life brings huge profits to people who are content with what they have. We didn’t bring anything into the world, and we can’t take anything out of it. As long as we have food and clothes, we should be satisfied.

 But people who want to get rich keep falling into temptation. They are trapped by many stupid and harmful desires which drown them in destruction and ruin. Certainly, the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. Some people who have set their hearts on getting rich have wandered away from the Christian faith and have caused themselves a lot of grief. (1 Tim 6:6-10)

Now Paul instructs Timothy how to battle such a plaque in verses 11-21;

But you, man of God, must avoid these things. Pursue what God approves of: a godly life, faith, love, endurance, and gentleness. Fight the good fight for the Christian faith. Take hold of everlasting life to which you were called and about which you made a good testimony in front of many witnesses.

 In the sight of God, who gives life to everything, and in the sight of Christ Jesus, who gave a good testimony in front of Pontius Pilate, I insist that, until our Lord Jesus Christ appears, you obey this command completely. Then you cannot be blamed for doing anything wrong. At the right time God will make this known. God is the blessed and only ruler. He is the King of kings and Lord of lords. He is the only one who cannot die. He lives in light that no one can come near. No one has seen him, nor can they see him. Honor and power belong to him forever! Amen.

 Tell those who have the riches of this world not to be arrogant and not to place their confidence in anything as uncertain as riches. Instead, they should place their confidence in God who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. Tell them to do good, to do a lot of good things, to be generous, and to share. By doing this they store up a treasure for themselves which is a good foundation for the future. In this way they take hold of what life really is.

 Timothy, guard the Good News which has been entrusted to you. Turn away from pointless discussions and the claims of false knowledge that people use to oppose the Christian faith. Although some claim to have knowledge, they have abandoned the faith. (1 Tim 6:11-21 GWT)

If we opened up the Bible to Romans Chapter 1, we would see that we are living in the very days described therein.

Has the Church taking a step backwards?

Sadly many in the Church today have taking on the Garden Mentality” in that they believe they question every aspect of God’s Word if it intrudes in their own life style and agenda not realizing that they are surrendering the very liberty that the Word brings to their lives.

Those of the grace, grace, grace movement who cry out “legalism” the loudest have birthed a generation of rebellious, anti –obedience people who have set them selves in the very seats of those whose name they label all who would disagree with them “Pharisees”. They claim to live a life filled with grace, yet they attitude towards those who are not holding to their doctrines is nothing short of that which John the Baptist called the Pharisees of his day “Brood of vipers” for they would eat their own if they disagreed with.

We must take a radical stand in our day and open the prison doors!!!

Unless the Church radically falls upon it’s face and repents and returns the sovereign rule of the House of God back to Jesus and out of the hands of men, this generation will not see the Glory of the Lord falling upon the earth.

We must wake up for the harvest fields are white before us, we must be willing to go on radical fasts, spend radical amounts of time engulfed in the Word of God & in prayer. We must radically raise our voices in the face of such rebellious acts against the Lord and His Word.

We must be a people who are radical in grace and mercy, who radically change our life styles of comfort in to that of servants. We must go into the highways and byways. We must not cower before the calls of social justice rather we must radically grab hold of these causes and impart the compassion, grace and mercy of our God into these situations.

We must radically change how we tithe and give of gifts. We must radically change our self-willed lives into that of Spirit lived lives.

Yet in all these things we must realize that we, in and of ourselves can not do it.

No, my friends, we must take that radical step towards the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.  Radically surrendering our wills and picking up our own crosses that have been dipped in His blood, baptized in His death and walk the life of obedient disciples, laying our lives down daily for the sake of the Kingdom of God, for the sake of the Gospel Message, for the sake of a lost and dying world, for the sake of seeing our lives break forth in such a way that His Glory is released throughout the world via broken and surrendered vessels such as we are called to be!!!

Let us step out of the prison of self indulgence today and into that of Radical Disciples of Jesus Christ for indeed we do serve an Awesome and Mighty God!!!!


So our proclamation this time is the last three verses of Psalm 19. Psalm 19:12–14:
Who can understand his errors?
Cleanse me from secret faults.
Keep back Your servant also from presumptuous sins;
Let them not have dominion over me.
Then I shall be blameless,
And I shall be innocent of great transgression.
Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart
Be acceptable in Your sight,
O LORD, my strength and my Redeemer.

In the two previous sessions I’ve dealt with, what I consider to be a serious problem in the first session, and in the second session I’ve tried to give a scriptural explanation of how the problem arises. In this final session I want to deal with four scriptural safeguards to keep us from the problem. The first safeguard is contained in 1 Peter 5:5–6, starting at the end of verse 5 and going through verse 6.
. . . God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.” Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time.

I believe that’s the first essential requirement—is that we HUMBLE OURSELVES. The Bible says, “God resists the proud…” So if we are trying to get into the presence of God and we have pride, we may push but He pushes against us, and He pushes harder than we can.

In the Bible there’s no place where it says that God will make us humble. Always, God puts the responsibility upon us. We have to humble ourselves. It’s a decision. We have to make it. No one can make it for us. People can pray for us, and preach to us, but we have to make the decision to humble ourselves under the mighty hand of God that He may exalt us in due time.

I said already, I think, pride is the greatest single problem, and the most common problem, and the most destructive problem. We saw earlier that “pride goes before destruction.” If we do not turn back from the way of pride, our end will be destruction.

Now there is something in Psalm 25 which I find very helpful and inspiring. Psalm 25:8–9:
Good and upright is the LORD;
Therefore He teaches sinners in the way.
The humble He guides in justice,
And the humble He teaches His way.

It’s the grace of the Lord that He’s willing to teach us sinners at all. But God enrolls His students, not by their intellectual qualifications, but by their character. A lot of people can go to a Bible school or a seminary or whatever else, but never be enrolled in God’s school, because God only enrolls the humble.

“The humble He guides in justice, the humble He teaches His way.”

The Old King James used to say the “meek.” I find in the modern translations that word “meek” has just dropped out. What’s the difference between humble and meek? As I see it, humble is your inner attitude, meek is the way you express it. We don’t need the word meek very much now days, because there are very few people to whom it applies. It’s very significant the words that we’re no longer using. Usually there’s a reason.

The next safeguard is in 2 Thessalonians 2:9–12.
The coming of the lawless one [that’s the antichrist] is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders,

Bear in mind, Satan is capable of producing power, and signs, and wonders. I have frequently commented that the obvious place for the antichrist to arise would be in the Charismatic movement, because most Charismatics seem to thing that anything supernatural must be from God. That’s not so. Satan is capable of great supernatural signs and wonders. So how do we protect ourselves? It goes on:
and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved.

So what is our protection against deception? RECEIVING THE
LOVE OF THE TRUTH. And again, it’s something we do. God will offer it to us, we have to receive it. Now those who do not receive the love of the truth, God says this:

And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie, that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

That’s a frightening verse. God will send them strong delusion. If God sends you strong delusion, you will be deluded.

In 1994, this is a personal subjective comment, I got up one night to go to the bathroom in Jerusalem, and I was walking back to my bed, God impressed upon my mind very clearly that He had sent strong delusion to the present Israeli government. I think everything that has happened since amply confirms that. It’s a very significant statement because if God has sent strong delusion, it’s no good praying for people not to be deluded. I think there are a lot of sentimental prayers about the Middle East which don’t amount to anything.

There are two words that are used in a soulish way to manipulate people. One is peace, the other is love. So the people of the Middle East, and I think probably the people of the world are being manipulated by the offer of peace. You see, if you’re against that you’re wicked. Anybody who is against peace is a bad person. How can you afford not to agree with it.

There are conditions for peace. In Isaiah, the prophet says, “There is no peace to the wicked.” And in Romans it says, “The kingdom of God is righteousness, peace and joy.” You cannot have peace apart from righteousness. I know lots of Christians that are praying for joy, but if they don’t meet the condition of righteousness it’s not available to them. I find that peace is a word that’s used by politicians to manipulate people. They are deceiving people, because peace will not come to the unrighteousness.

The other manipulating word is love, which is used in the church. We talk a lot about the love of God, be loving, God is so loving, He is so kind. It’s all true, but God is also a very strict God. I have personally come to this conclusion on the basis of my own experience and observation of people close to me—you cannot get away with anything with God!

Nothing! You may think you’ve got away with it and God may forgive you, but you’ll still expect the consequences. See, God forgives but He does not always release us from the consequences of what we’ve done. So it’s better not to do it. So don’t have any sentimental picture of God. He’s not a Father Christmas doling out candy to little children. He’s very just, very righteous, very loving, but in a sense very severe. You cannot get away with a thing with God. So don’t try.

I feel that love is being used to manipulate people at the present time. People are talking about the love of God and God is so loving. It’s all true, but God’s love is expressed in surprising ways. As I quoted earlier, Jesus said to the church of Laodicea, “As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten.” That’s love. God is our Father and He loves us, but He also disciplines us.

There are two wrong ways of responding to the discipline of God. We look in Hebrews 12 for a moment and this is addressed to Christians. Hebrews 12:5–8:
And you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as to sons: “My son, do not despise the chastening of the LORD, Nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him; For whom the LORD loves He chastens, And scourges every son whom He receives.”

If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom a father does not chasten? But if you are without chastening, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate and not sons.
Now there are two wrong ways of responding to God’s chastening. The first one says, “Do not despise the chastening of the Lord.” Do not just shrug your shoulder and say, “Well, so what?” My observation is that many mature Christians don’t believe that God will discipline them any longer. The truth is, He never stops disciplining. This was brought home to me so vividly when I was reading the account of Moses. At the age of 80 God chose him and commissioned him to be the deliverer of Israel from Egypt, sent him back to Egypt. But on the way, the Lord met him at the inn and tried to kill him.

Extraordinary! Why? Because he had not circumcised his son. He had disobeyed the sign of the covenant that God had made with Abraham and his descendants. So God would rather have seen Moses die than go through with his ministry in disobedience.

Sometimes we say, “Satan is resisting me” and the truth of the matter is it isn’t Satan. It’s God. “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” The other wrong reaction is, do not be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him. Don’t say, “This is more than I can take. God why do you let this happen to me. I can’t stand this. I’m not going to take it.” Those are the two wrong reactions. Despise it and be discouraged.

What about the love of the truth? The Greek word for love there is the one we are all familiar with “agape.” It’s a very strong word. It’s the strongest word in the Greek language for “love.” So it’s not just reading your Bible every morning, or going to church and listening to the sermon. It’s a passionate commitment to the truth of God. That’s what we have to cultivate if we are to escape delusion. God will send strong delusion to those who have not received the “agape” love of the truth. That’s more than just having a quiet time or reading your Bible at week ends. That is a passionate commitment to the truth of God.

I think I can say without being boastful, God has given me that. I’m not boasting, but I think God has given me a passionate commitment to the truth. Every time I hear something that I don’t think is truth, something in me rises up. So that’s something that God can do for you, but you have to let Him do it. So that’s the second safeguard.

RECEIVE THE LOVE OF THE TRUTH.

The third safeguard is to CULTIVATE THE FEAR OF THE LORD. A lot of Christians say there’s no more fear in the Christian life. That’s not true. Certain kinds of fear are excluded. I’m going to give you a list of Scriptures now. Ruth and I have memorized at least 20 different passages about the fear of the Lord. The promises are so exciting that I can’t understand why anybody doesn’t want the fear of the Lord. I will give you some of them. Psalm 34:11–14:
Come, you children, listen to me;
I will teach you the fear of the LORD.
Who is the man who desires life,
And loves many days that he may see good?
Keep your tongue from evil,
And your lips from speaking deceit [guile].
Depart from evil and do good;
Seek peace and pursue it.

So the implication is that the fear of the Lord will cause God to give you many days of good life. The first area that God deals with is what? The tongue. “Keep you tongue from evil, your lips from speaking guile.”

Then in Psalm 19:9 it says:
The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever;
The fear of the Lord will never cease, it endures forever.

And in Job 28:28:
. . . ‘Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom,
And to depart from evil is understanding.’

Notice that the primary requirement for wisdom and understanding is not intellectual, it’s moral. It’s to depart from evil. There are lots of clever fools around.

Proverbs 8:13:
The fear of the LORD is to hate evil;
Pride and arrogance and the evil way
And the perverse mouth I hate.

Notice, you cannot be neutral about evil if you have the fear of the Lord. You have to hate it. And the first thing you hate is what? Pride. Arrogance.

Proverbs 9:10–11:
“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom,
And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

For by me your days will be multiplied And years of life will be added to you.

So you want a long life? Cultivate the fear of the Lord. And a good life. It’s not enough to live long. You can live long in misery. But the fear of the Lord, God offers us a long and blessed life.

Proverbs 14:26–27:
In the fear of the LORD there is strong confidence,
And His children will have a place of refuge.

So the fear of the Lord doesn’t make you timid, it gives you strong confidence, and it provides a place of refuge for your children, which in these days I think is very important. The next verse says:

The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life,
To avoid the snares of death.

That’s a very vivid picture. Satan has set snares. Snares of death. How can we avoid them? Through the fear of the Lord.
Proverbs 19:23 is almost incredible. I can hardly believe, but it’s in the Bible.

The fear of the LORD leads to life.

And he who has it will abide in satisfaction;
He will not be visited with evil.

How can you turn down a promise like that? “Abide in satisfaction, not be visited with evil.” It doesn’t mean you’ll have an easy life.

Proverbs 22:4:
By humility and the fear of the LORD Are riches and honor and life.

You’ll find at least 50 per cent of the time, the fear of the Lord is directly connected with life. It is one primary condition for a good life. And then, I think most important of all, in a way, is the prophetic picture of Messiah. Isaiah 11:1–2, and I think we all know that this is fulfilled in Jesus.

There shall come forth a Rod from the stem of Jesse, And a Branch shall grow out of his roots. [All the New Testament scriptures confirm that this is Jesus. Now listen.]
The Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon Him,
The Spirit and wisdom and understanding,
The Spirit of counsel and might,

The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD.
It’s interesting to see that the Spirit that rests on Jesus is seven-fold. Seven is always the number of the Holy Spirit. It says in Revelation 4:5 that before the throne of God there were seven lamps of fire which are the seven Spirits of God. Personally I understand this passage to reveal to us the seven Spirits of God.

The first is the Spirit of the Lord, that is the Spirit that speaks in the first person as God. Then they all come after that in pairs. The Spirit of wisdom and understanding. The Spirit of counsel and might. The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord. I think it’s important to see that knowledge has to be balanced by the fear of the Lord, because knowledge puffs up. But the fear of the Lord keeps us humble. It speaks volumes to me that that Spirit was upon Jesus; the Spirit of the fear of the Lord. Though He was the Son of God, He had the fear of the Lord. It rested upon Him. It never lifted from Him.

Continuing with the fear of the Lord, the fear of the Lord is a counter balance to joy. It’s very important that we don’t just get excited, but we’re anchored by the fear of the Lord. Again, I think this is a tremendous weakness in the Charismatic movement. People get all excited and happy and clap their hands, dance around, which is wonderful. But, not without the fear of the Lord. Psalm 2:11 says:
Serve the LORD with fear,
And rejoice with trembling.

Now that seems to be inconsistent, but it’s the balance. You rejoice but with trembling. You stand in awe while you are rejoicing. This is carried over into the New Testament in Acts 9:31 it describes the growth of the church in Judea, and it says:

Then the churches [or the church] throughout all Judea, Galilee, and Samaria had peace and were edified [or built up]. And walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, they were multiplied.

Again, notice the balance. The Holy Spirit comforts us, but we have to walk in the fear of the Lord. We can be encouraged, we can be built up, but that must be balanced by the fear of the Lord.

Well you might say, “Well, Brother Prince, I’ve been redeemed. I’m a child of God. Surely I don’t need to fear God anymore.” The answer is you do all the more, because you are redeemed. Because of the price that God paid to redeem you. That’s stated in 1 Peter 1:17–19:

And if you call on the Father, who without partiality judges according to each one’s work [and each one includes you and me], conduct yourselves throughout the time of your stay [or sojourning] here in fear; knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.

So the very fact that we’ve been redeemed is a reason to pass the time of our sojourning here in fear, because God invested so much in us. He paid for us with the blood of Christ. So we have no excuse to be flippant. You see flippancy is really a denial of the fear of the Lord.
Then the fourth and the final safeguard is MAKE AND KEEP THE CROSS CENTRAL. I looked at the example of Paul in 1 Corinthians 2:1–5:

And I, brethren, when I came to you, did not come with excellence of speech or wisdom declaring to the testimony [or mystery] of God.

You have to bear in mind that in that culture the highest achievement was oratory. If you were anything, you were an excellent speaker otherwise you were probably despised. So Paul when he says, “I laid aside excellent speech,” in a sense was saying “I am not bowing to this culture.” For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. I was with you in weakness, in fear, and in much trembling.

We looked at the fact that God’s strength is made perfect in weakness. When we have all the strength we need of our own, we don’t need God’s strength. God has to bring us to the place where we don’t have strength. I have seen in my own experience in ministry continually, if God is going to use me in any significant way He has to bring me to the place where I know I can’t do it. Where I know I am totally dependent upon Him. That I am weak, then His strength is made perfect in my weakness.

Let me say something else in this connection. I just discovered that the opportunities to serve God seldom suit our convenience. Generally speaking, if God gives you an opportunity to serve Him, it will be inconvenient in some way. That’s to test the sincerity of your motives. But if we want God’s strength manifested in our lives, in our ministry, in our congregations, we have to cultivate the fear of the Lord.

We have to cultivate a sense of dependence, an acknowledgment of our total dependence upon God. This is just personal, but every time before I preach, I tell God I know, “I don’t have the ability. I’m totally dependent upon You. If You don’t anoint me, if You don’t inspire me, if You don’t strengthen me I cannot do it.” Every now and then I may stand up to preach and forget to do that. And mentally in my mind while I am preaching I’ll say, “Lord, please remember I’m dependent upon You. I cannot do it in my own strength. And then Paul goes on to say,

And my speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words of human wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, that your faith should not be in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.

And I pointed out, the key to releasing the power of the Holy Spirit is to be focused on the cross. There’s a hymn which says, “When I survey the wondrous cross on which the Prince of glory die. My richest gain I count by loss and pour contempt on all my pride.” When we really see the cross we have nothing to boast of. It’s interesting, the original version of that hymn, which was written by an Englishman, was “When I survey the wondrous cross where the young Prince of glory die…” He was pointing our that Jesus was cut off in His prime. He died in His very best age. I believe one of our greatest needs is to focus on the cross.

I’ve see people very ambitious, striving for success, wanting to build a large church. Sometimes they succeed. But unless the whole message is focused on the cross, they don’t have much but wood, hay, and straw.

I’m reminded of a well-known English preacher of a previous generation called Charles Spurgeon, a Baptist, and he was continually emphasizing to his students the importance of focusing on the cross. One day he said something like this, “To preach the principles of the Christian life and make no mention of the cross, is like a drill sergeant giving orders to a squad of soldiers who have no feet. They can hear his orders and understand them, but they lack the ability to carry them out. And it’s only through the cross that we get the ability to do what God tells us to do.”

So let us look again at the first five verses of 1 Corinthians chapter 2. These are some of my favorite verses because I came to the Lord sovereignly from a background of Greek philosophy. And when Paul speaks about wisdom as he does, he’s talking about Greek philosophy. So I think, I’m particularly able to appreciate the impact of what he says about wisdom.

We need to understand when we read these verses that Paul is speaking about a certain part of his ministry journey. In Acts 17 he was in Athens, which was the intellectual center, the university city of the ancient world. He preached a sermon unlike any other that is recorded. It was a somewhat intellectual sermon. He adapted himself to his audience and even quoted from a Greek poet, which I don’t think he ever did at any other time. I wonder whether Paul was really led by the Holy Spirit. At any rate, the results were very disappointing. Just a few people believed.

From Athens Paul went on to Corinth. Now Corinth was a port city, somewhat like the major port cities of our present world. A very wicked city where every kind of sin flourished. Somewhere between Athens and Corinth, Paul made a decision which is recorded in these verses.
And I, brethren, when I came to you, did not come with excellence of speech or of wisdom declaring to you the mystery of God. For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. I was with you in weakness, in fear, and in much trembling. And my speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words or human wisdom, but of demonstration of the Spirit and of power, that your faith should not be in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.

So Paul made a revolutionary decision somewhere. He wasn’t going to preach that kind of message in Corinth that he preached in Athens. He said something which, for a Jew, is remarkable. He said, “I determine not to know anything.” And basically the Jews are a people who know a lot. Often their confidence is in what they know. He made an amazing statement, “I determine not to know anything. I forget everything I’ve learned at the feet of Gamaliel, in all my studies. Forget it all. I’m only concerned with one thing—Jesus Christ. And not just Jesus Christ, but Jesus Christ crucified. That’s the center and the focus of my message.”

I believe it should be the focus and the center of our message. I believe that if we ever get away from the cross as central we are in danger. I notice that Paul expected the demonstration of the Holy Spirit and power. I find today in our contemporary church that if you preach about power, everybody gets excited. If you appeal to people who want to receive power, many people will come forward. Personally, I believe this emphasis on power if extremely dangerous. Observing, as I’ve observed over a good many years, what happens to people who focus on power, they end in trouble. They usually end error.

Power is something that appeals to the natural man. Some psychologists have said that the desire for power is the number one desire in the human personality. Paul said, “I want power, but I want it on a different basis from that which the world understand. I want to forget all my wisdom, all my knowledge, all my theological qualifications. I want to focus on only one thing; Jesus Christ crucified.” Then he said in effect, “When I do that, I can be sure that the Holy Spirit will come in power.”

So, I’m just going to close with one of my favorite Scriptures, Galatians 6:14:

But God forbid that I should glory or boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.

Let me just recapitulate my four suggested safeguards.

No. 1 HUMBLE OURSELVES – and in that passage Peter says, “Our adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour.” So the devil is very powerful and very active. Any theology that tells you different is a deception. I was meditating on the list yesterday evening and I was thinking, suppose that an announcement was made that a lion was loose on the ground floor of this hotel, and you needed to get out. I don’t think you would walk through the lobby humming a cheerful little chorus. You’d be very circumspect how you made your exit and you’d be very interested in closing the door behind you.

That I believe is a picture of how we need to conduct ourselves, because our adversary the devil is walking about like a roaring lion. We can’t change that. Incidentally, you know why lions roar?

It’s to terrify their prey. To paralyze them. So don’t be paralyzed by the lion’s roar. Be very cautious. Be very circumspect. But you don’t have to give way to fear. So that was number one safeguard—HUMBLE OURSELVES.

No. 2 RECEIVE THE LOVE OF THE TRUTH

NO. 3 CULTIVATE THE FEAR OF THE LORD

NO. 4 MAKE AND KEEP THE CROSS CENTRAL.

Now, I want to suggest that we quote Galatians 6:14 together. I don’t expect you all to know it by heart, so I’ll say it phrase by phrase and you say it after me.
But God forbid that I should boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified to me, and I to the world.

Our proclamation this morning is 1 Thessalonians 5:23–24:
Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you [us] completely; and may your [our] whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who calls you [us] is faithful, who also will do it.

We’ll carry on from yesterday evening when I did my best to analyze, what I consider to be a problem. This morning I purpose to analyze how the problem arises in terms of Scripture. This is very important because the problem continues to arise. I’ll give you five examples of the same problem arising in the last fifty years in the Charismatic movement. I feel that if we can analyze the problem, then the next step is to avoid it. So what I have to say is entirely practical, I hope.

Today I want to deal with the total human personality, and particularly two elements of human personality. If we don’t understand ourselves and how we are made up, we have a problem. The total human personality, I believe, is unfolded in the verse that we quoted. “Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify us completely; and may our whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless. . . .” So completely means our whole spirit, soul, and body.

It says in Genesis chapter 1, that God decided to create man in His own image and in His likeness. That’s Genesis 1:26.

His image would refer to His outward appearance. There is something in the outward appearance of man that reflects the outward appearance of God. Let me point it out this way—it was appropriate that the Son of God should be manifested in the form of a male human being. He could not have come in the form of an ox or a beetle, because the male human being, in a sense, represents the image or the outward appearance of God.

Paul says in 1 Corinthians 11:7:
For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God . . .

The other phrase that’s used in Genesis is not image but likeness. Likeness, I believe, represents the inner structure of the Godhead. The structure of the Godhead is triune—Father, Son, and Spirit. In that likeness man was created a triune being; spirit, soul, and body. So man, in a unique way, represents God to the creation over which God set him as a ruler, in his outward appearance and in his inner composition.

We’re not going to deal with the outward appearance, but with the inner structure of human personality which is threefold; spirit, soul, and body. If we go back to the creation we can trace the origin of each. The spirit came from the inbreathed breath of God. When God breathed into Adam, that produced spirit in Adam. Incidentally, the words for spirit and breath are the same both in Hebrew and in Greek. The body was clay, infused with divine life. The soul came about through the union of spirit and body. The soul is the part that’s difficult to understand.

It is the unique individual ego, the thing in each of us that can say, “I will,” or “I won’t.” It’s usually defined as consisting of the will, the emotions and the intellect. So, very simply these are expressed or represented in three verbal statements, “I want, I think, I feel.” That’s the nature of the soul. Those who are separated from God by sin are dominated by their soul. You’ll find if you analyze it, that the life and actions of the natural man are controlled by those three things—I want, I think, I feel.

Now, let’s consider what happened to Adam and Eve through the fall.

First of all, the spirit died. God said in Genesis 2:17 to Adam:
“. . . the day that you eat of the tree, you shall die.”
Adam did not die physically for more than 900 years, but he died spiritually the moment he disobeyed God. At the same time, Adam’s soul became a rebel. We have to bear in mind that every descendant of Adam, male or female, has in him or her the nature of a rebel. That is our biggest single problem. For that reason it is not sufficient merely have our sins forgiven, though that is wonderful. But, the rebel has to be put to death, and that is part of the provision of the gospel.

Let me just look at two passages in Ephesians which deal with both of these conditions; the death of the spirit and the rebellion of the soul. In Ephesians 2:1–3 speaking to believers who have come alive in Christ, Paul says:
And you He made alive, who once were dead in trespasses and sins, [They were not physically dead, but they were spiritually dead in trespasses and sins and it was the new birth that bought them back to life.

Then it says about those sins,] in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, [that’s Satan] the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, among whom also we all [and that includes the Apostle Paul] once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others.

That’s a picture of the whole human race in rebellion against God. And, because of the rebellion, dead in trespasses and sins. That is the outcome of sin. The spirit dies, the soul becomes a rebel in rebellion against its creator. What happens to the body? It becomes, what the Bible calls, corruptible.

That means it’s subject to sickness, aging, and ultimately death. But as I pointed out, the death of Adam did not take place physically for more than 900 years. The death that Adam experienced when he disobeyed God was probably what the Bible would call, the first death.

Then the New Testament speaks of the second death—Revelation 20:6,14, which I believe is the final separation of the rebellious spirit and soul from God forever.
Now, what happens when we get saved? To our spirit, it’s made alive. We have become alive again in Christ. Let me read Ephesians 2:4–6.

But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus.

So God made us alive. That’s not all that He did. We do not have time to analyze this, but He also resurrected us and then He enthroned us. All that is put in the past tense, so if we can accept it, spiritually we are seated with Christ upon the throne. But the thing that I want to emphasize now is we have been made alive.

Now the soul through repentance is reconciled to God. It’s very important to emphasize repentance. A rebel cannot be reconciled to God as long as he remains a rebel. So one of the things that’s involved in salvation is that we lay down our rebellion. Lot’s of people who claim to be born again and saved, have in actual fact never renounced their rebellion. They have an outward form of Christianity, but the inner reality is not there.

Let’s look now in Romans 5:1:
Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, We were at war with God? Now we’ve been justified by faith. We have peace with God. Then in verse 11 it says, And not only that, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation. We were at war with God. We have been reconciled.

Then, what happens to the body through salvation? It becomes a temple for the Holy Spirit. I think this is very important. A lot of believers do not realize that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, and that we have to treat them with reverence. In 1 Corinthians 6:19,20, Paul begins, “Do you not know . . . ?” a phrase that he must use at least half a dozen times.

My observation is that every time Paul says, “Do you not know,” most Christians do not know. So this is what Paul says:
Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body . . .

Let’s sum up what happens at salvation. Our spirit is made alive, our soul is reconciled with God, and our body is made a temple for the Holy Spirit and also becomes eligible for the first resurrection. In Philippians 3:10–11, Paul says that our body is made eligible for the first resurrection and that this is the goal of his Christian life.

This is what he says:
that I may know Him [that is Jesus] and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death, if, by any means, I may attain to the resurrection from the dead.

The word used there means the “out resurrection,” that is not the final complete resurrection, but the resurrection which is only of true believers. I’m always impressed by the fact that Paul did not take it for granted. He said, “My purpose is so to live that I may qualify for the first resurrection.” I really do not believe we can take it for granted. It depends on how we live.

Now, what are the functions of these three elements? First of all the spirit. The spirit is capable of direct communion with God and worship. It’s the part of man that originated from God and can return to God in fellowship and worship. This is stated in 1 Corinthians 6:17, a very important verse.

But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him.
In my opinion it would be completely incorrect to say one soul. It is one spirit. If you take that in the context, Paul is talking about a man being joined to a prostitute, and he says, “That’s a physical union.” But what he is talking about is a spiritual union. If you take that picture it becomes clear that it is a very real union. But it’s only the spirit that can be united with God. The soul cannot. The body cannot. Because of that, the spirit and the spirit alone, I believe, is capable of true worship.

In John 4:23–24 Jesus says,
“But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. [That is to me a staggering statement. Almighty God, who created the universe, is looking for people who will worship Him. And then it says,] God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”

The spirit is the element in us which is capable of worship. The soul is capable of praise and thanksgiving, but only the spirit, I believe, can offer to God the worship which is acceptable.

What happens to the soul? The soul is the decision making element. Through regeneration, the soul is able to make right decisions. David said in Psalm 103, “Bless the LORD, O my soul. . . .” He was talking to his soul. What part of him was talking to his soul? His spirit. His spirit sensed the need to bless the Lord. But his spirit could not do it until his soul activated his body. So the spirit, in this present creation, moves upon the body through the soul. We’ll come back to that in a moment, because the New Testament speaks about a soulish body and a spiritual body.

To take a very crude example, I think the soul is like the gear lever in the car. You sit in the drivers seat, switch on the engine, but to get the car moving you have to use the gear lever. The gear lever is the soul. The spirit is there but it cannot move the car without the soul.
My purpose in all of this is to come to the place where we can distinguish between the spirit and the soul. But that’s not easy. In fact, there’s only one way we can do it effectively, which we find in Hebrews 4:12:

For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Notice the word “even.” The word of God is the only instrument which is sensitive enough and sharp enough to penetrate, to divide between soul and spirit. In no other way can we understand the different functions of soul and spirit, and the relationship between them accept by the word of God. You cannot rely on your own understanding, your own feelings. They’re not reliable. The only reliable discerner is the word of God. But to use the word of God as a discerner, two conditions are set. They are found in Hebrews 5:13–14, where the writer is talking about the difference between mature and immature Christians.

For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe. [Those who can only feed on milk are still babies. Then he goes on to say,] But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, [or who are mature] that is, those who by reason of use [but the margin says “practice”] have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

In other words, discernment is not something that we can take for granted. It only comes by practice, and it only comes when we take in the whole counsel of God through His word. If we are living like babies on milk, we do not have the ability to discern. If we have grown beyond that, we still cannot discern unless we practice.

I would like to challenge you and ask you, are you practicing discernment? I think I can say of myself that in a certain measure, I do practice discernment. When I walk into a situation I put up my spiritual antennae, and I ask myself, “What are the spiritual forces at work in this situation.” When I listen to a sermon, I not only listen to the words, I try to discern the spirit that is coming through the words. But this only comes by practice. If you just walk around carelessly and casually, you will not have the ability to discern. I believe we need to practice discernment in every situation. I believe discernment should be as regularly a part of our spiritual life as prayer. Otherwise, we’ll be in trouble.

Now, I want to talk about the difference between the spiritual and the soulish, which I will illustrate from the diagram which you have available to you that’s in your outline. This diagram illustrates the use of two Greek words—the word for spirit and the word for soul. If you look at the diagram you’ll see in it we have the Greek and then the English. We have the noun and then the adjective. When you see them in writing the relationship is obvious.

Now the Greek word for spirit is pneuma from which we get the English word pneumatic, which is a drill that is operated by air. This is because pneuma means breath, wind and spirit.

Now the adjective (and you should be looking at your diagram) from pneuma is pneumatikos. How do we translate that into English? We know that pneuma is spirit, obviously the English adjective from pneuma is spiritual. That’s right. There’s no choice.

Now we come down to the Greek word for soul, and here is the problem. The Greek word for soul is psuche from which we get countless different words like psychological, or psychiatric, or psychosomatic. A psychiatrist is a doctor of the soul, because iatros is the Greek word for doctor. All right, we have psuche and the Greek adjective is psuchikos.
Now, there’s no hesitation about the translation of the noun—it’s “soul.” But what about the adjective? The problem is that English does not have a word “soulish.”

I believe, therefore, that we have to create a word to translate the Bible correctly. According to my understanding, in German, Dutch, Danish, Swedish, and Norwegian—in all those languages there is a word for “soulish.” But English is limping along without the necessary word to convey this very important distinction.

Now I’ll take all the places in the New Testament where the word psuchikos or “soulish” is used and I’ll try to draw out the difference between spiritual and soulish.

First of all, we will take three cases where the word “soulish” is applied to the physical body, which is perhaps a little hard to understand. I looked at five translations and I found various different words that are used in different versions to translate this word psuchikos.

In the original King James they use “natural” or “sensual.” In the New King James they also use “natural” or “sensual.” But in the margin in the last case they use “worldly.” In the New American Standard they use “natural,” and in the margin “unspiritual” and finally, “worldly minded.”

In the New International Version they use “without the spirit,” “natural,” “unspiritual,” and then they use the phrase “follow their natural instinct.” You see then, that unless we get behind the English translations, we really cannot grasp this vital distinction between that which is spiritualand that which is soulish.

Now we’ll look at the three cases where soulish is applied to the body. In 1 Corinthians 15:44, twice in one verse, and then in verse 46. I’ve never heard anybody else discuss this, but I’ll give you my understanding and you can accept it or reject it as you see fit. But, it’s an exciting issue, because Paul says in 1 Corinthians 15:44 relating to the resurrection,

It is sown a natural body [that is, a soulish body], it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body [that is, a soulish body], and there is a spiritual body.
You will notice that there is always the contrast between the soulish and the spiritual. There is a soulish body and there is a spiritual body.

Then in verse 46 Paul says,
However, the spiritual is not first, but the natural [that’s soulish], and afterward the spiritual.

So our present body is soulish; our resurrection body will be spiritual. I understand that means we will no longer need the “gear lever.” Our spirit will simply decide where to go, what to say, what to do, and it will happen. It will be a body controlled by the spirit.

We have in Ezekiel chapter 1 a picture of some creatures which could be represented as having spiritual bodies. To me, this is exciting, because in the resurrection we will have a body like Jesus. We will just go where we want. No problems about dealing with the soul.

In Ezekiel 1:12 talking about the cherubs, it says,
And each one went straight forward; they went wherever the spirit wanted to go, and they did not turn when they went.
So they have spiritual bodies. They just go wherever the spirit wants to go. And in the same passage in verse 20,
Wherever the spirit wanted to go, they went, because there the spirit went . . .

So this is how I understand it. A spiritual body is a body which is directly motivated and controlled by the spirit. It’s like a car in which you just switch on the engine and it goes wherever you want at whatever speed. You don’t have to bother with the gear lever.

There are three cases where the word psuchikos is used to a body. No English translation that I know of uses the word soulish. Consequently the distinction is obscured.
Now let’s look at the other places where the word psuchikos is used. Here we come to a point where there is a clear conflict between the soulish and the spiritual. 1 Corinthians 2:14–15:

But the natural man [the soulish man] does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. But he who is spiritual judges all things, yet he himself is rightly judged by no one.

So the soulish man is not in harmony with the spirit. He cannot receive the things of the spirit. He cannot understand them. You can talk to the most highly educated intellects and they have no ability whatever to understand the things of the spirit, because they are operating in the realm of the soul. This is important because it brings out, there is in a certain sense, an opposition between the spiritual and the soulish.

Then we go on to the Epistle of Jude verse 19 which is a rather illuminating verse. Talking about people who have made trouble in the church, the New King James says,

These are sensual persons, who cause divisions, not having the Spirit [capital S, the Holy Spirit].

But very obviously they are part of the church, because they cause division. So we have in the church both those who are spiritual and those who are soulish.

Then the most significant passage of all is James 3:15, which I will deal with at length. Talking about a certain kind of wisdom, James says,
This wisdom does not descend from above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic.

By now you have arrived at the conclusion that sensual is soulish. So there is a kind of wisdom that is soulish. And there is a decline, descending in three stages. First, earthly; second, soulish; third, demonic. I believe this is the main way in which demons get into the work of God, the people of God, the church of God. It is through this decline from the earthly, to the soulish, to the demonic.

Now, let’s consider what’s implied. What does it mean to be earthly? For a Christian I believe it means our vision is completely limited to this earth. We cannot see beyond the earth. All we are expecting from God through salvation are things that belong to this life—prosperity, healing, success, power, who knows what. I believe all of that is soulish. I’ll take a few examples of people who are not earthly. You can find a whole list of them in Hebrews 11. In fact, you could really sum up the saints of Hebrews 11 as those who are not earthly. Here are just two examples. In Hebrews 11:9–10 speaking about Abraham, it says,

By faith he dwelt in the land of promise as in a foreign country, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise; for he waited for the city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God.

Abraham was in the promised land. He knew it was promised to him, but he did not own it and he never lived there as if he owned it. He never bought a house, or built a house. He always lived in a tent which is something movable.

Note the contrast with Lot who separated from Abraham and turned his face toward Sodom. The men of Sodom were sinners before the Lord and exceedingly wicked and Lot went where his face was turned. So the next time you read about Lot, he’s not just looking toward Sodom, he’s in Sodom and he’s living in a house, no longer in a tent. I think Lot, in a sense, is a type of the earthly man of God.

But, Abraham had a vision had a vision which extended beyond time into eternity. He was waiting for a city that he had never seen, but he knew one day it would be his home. I think that is how God expects us to be as Christians. We are not at home in this world. When we become at home in this world, we become soulish.

My second example is Moses in Hebrews 11:27:
By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king; for he endured as seeing Him who is invisible.
Let me suggest to you that this is the key to endurance.

It’s looking beyond time, looking beyond the level of this life where we often will have a very hard time, many frustrations, many disappointments. What will cause us to endure? A vision that takes us beyond time. There are many other examples. These two are just examples. Abraham and Moses are people who were not earthly.

Then there’s also a remarkable statement by Paul which we would do well to ponder in 1 Corinthians 15:19:
If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men the most pitiable. [Or the most to be pitied.]
That’s a very remarkable statement. If all our Christian faith provides for us is things in this life, we are pitiable, we are to be pitied. I have to say, and I want to say it graciously, there’s a good deal of teaching in the church which only focuses on what God will do for us in this life. Such people often consider themselves prosperous and successful. God considers them pitiable.

This is a very, very basic truth. Christians of previous generations, I would say up to World War I, were basically conscious of this fact—the world is not our home. But since that time, many, many Christians have lost this perception and live as if we really belonged here. Our thoughts and our ambitions and our plans are focused on the things of time.

We are earthly.

When we become earthly, what is the next step down? Soulish. What is the essence of the soul? The ego. What is it to be soulish? It’s to be egocentric. To be absolutely concerned with “Number One,” as they say.

The soulish person says, “What’s in this for me?” The spiritual person says, “How can I glorify God?” I think you’ll agree. I think I’m not being cynical. There is a great deal of soulishness in the contemporary church, defined this way. Then the soulish opens up for the demonic. When you get into the realm of the soulish you’re exposed to the demonic. This, I believe, is primarily what permits demons to infiltrate the people of God, the work of God. A little later I’ll give you five examples of what has happened in this century.

Let’s consider for a moment two Old Testament patterns of people who moved out of the earthly into the soulish, and from the soulish to the demonic.

They were very distinguished people. The first one is Aaron. If you turn to Exodus 32 you will find something that always astonishes me.

Here was the anointed and appointed high priest making a golden calf. I want to analyze what it says in Exodus 32:1–10. Moses at this time is up on the mountain. They’ve not seen him for something like forty days. Exodus 32:1:
Now when the people saw that Moses delayed coming down from the mountain, the people gathered together to Aaron, and said to him, “Come, make us gods that shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.”

The very significant phrase there is, “. . . the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt.” They had lost sight of God. They were focusing on human leaders. I believe, almost inevitably, that will lead to idolatry. When we lose our vision of God and focus on God’s servants, we’re in great danger.

And Aaron said to them, “Break off the golden earrings which are in the ears of your wives, your sons, and your daughters, and bring them to me: So all the people broke off the golden earrings which were in their ears, and brought them to Aaron. And he received the gold from their hand, and fashioned it with an engraving tool, and made a molded calf.

Then they said, “This is your god, O Israel, that brought you out of the land of Egypt!” So when Aaron saw it, [this is an amazing description, when Aaron saw his own calf] he built an altar before it. And Aaron made a proclamation and said, “Tomorrow is a feast to the LORD.” To Yahweh or Jehovah. I mean, I find it hard to understand how Aaron could that. But if Aaron could do it, you and I could do it. We’re no better than Aaron. Probably most of us are not of his caliber. Then it says,

Then they rose early on the next day, offered burnt offerings, and brought peace offerings; and the people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.

That’s the essence of idolatry—play. When our worship becomes play, we’ve moved out of the spiritual into the soulish, and ultimately into the demonic. I don’t want to appear critical, but I have to say to my understanding, most of what is called worship in the Charismatic movement is not worship at all. Often it is very self-centered. “God heal me, God bless me, God make me feel good, God do this, and God do that.”

It is egocentric. It is soulish. Only the spirit can focus directly on God. Much of the music that we have in the church appeals to the soul, stimulates the soul. It’s very much the same kind of music as is used in the world to stimulate the soul.

I’m no expert in music, absolutely not at all. I cannot sing a note in tune. But I have a certain sensitivity to the impact of music. Having lived five years in Africa I am aware that certain repetitive themes and rhythms can deaden your sensitivity if you sit under that long enough, especially when it’s very loud. You lose the capacity to discern. And in Africa, those rhythms are used to call up demons.

What is amazing about the scene of Israel’s idolatry here described, is the total difference between the attitude of the people when God spoke from heaven and their attitude, perhaps, two months later. There had been the most amazing shift. In Exodus 20 when they had a unique revelation from God, such as no other nation has ever had, there response was awe, fear, reverence.

In Exodus 20:18–21, after God had pronounced the Ten Commandments from the mountain:
Now all the people witnessed the thundering, the lightning flashes, the sound of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking; and when the people saw it, they trembled and stood afar off. Then they said to Moses, “You speak with us, and we will hear; but let not God speak with us, lest we die.”
And Moses said to the people, “Do not fear; for God has come to test you, and that His fear may be before you, so that you may not sin.” So the people stood afar off, but Moses drew near the thick darkness where God was.

They were so impressed by the holiness and the majesty of God that they said, “Moses, we can’t listen to that voice anymore. Will you please hear for us, and we will listen to what you say to us.” Yet in less than two months they had come from that attitude to the place where they wanted a golden calf to worship, where they saw not God but Moses as the person who had brought them out of Egypt.

Paul takes this up in the New Testament in 1 Corinthians 10:5–7 speaking about the experiences of Israel when they came out of Egypt. Paul says,

But with most of them God was not well pleased, for their bodies were scattered in the wilderness. Now these things became our examples, to the intent that we should not lust after evil things as they also lusted. And do not become idolaters as were some of them. As it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.”

What had happened? Their physical needs had been met. Their stomachs were full, their bodies were warmly clothed, so what next? Well, let’s have a little excitement. Let’s play. I’m so concerned when worship becomes play, and today much of it is. Worship has nothing to do with entertainment. Entertainment says, “Excite me, thrill me, satisfy me.” That’s all for the benefit of the soul. The spirit is excluded.

My second example of the transition from the spiritual to the soulish to the demonic is even more frightening. You’ll find it in Leviticus 9:23–10:2. This is a glorious moment. The people had done everything that God required in the form of sacrifices, and when their obedience was complete God sent His glory and burned up the sacrifice on the altar. And Moses and Aaron went into the tabernacle of meeting, and came out and blessed the people.

Then the glory of the LORD appeared to all the people, and fire came out from before the LORD and consumed the burnt offering and the fat on the altar. When all the people saw it, they shouted and fell on their faces.

A manifest demonstration of God’s glory and a fire that actually consumed the sacrifice on the altar. Now the next two verses, the first two verses of the next chapter are some of the most tragic in the Bible.

Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron [Nadab was the eldest son. He was scheduled to become high priest in place of Aaron] each took his censer and put fire in it, put incense on it, and offered profane fire before the LORD, which He had not commanded them. So fire went out from the LORD and devoured them, and they died before the LORD.

The same fire that consumed the sacrifice, burned up the worshipers. What is profane fire? I understand it is fire that is not taken from the altar that God has commanded. What is profane fire in our experience? I would say it’s worship in any spirit other than the Holy Spirit. The penalty was death.

We read in Numbers 16:1–35 about an insurrection against Moses in the wilderness. When some of the leaders took 250 censers, filled them with fire and said, “We’re just as good as Aaron. We’ve got just as much right to be priests as he has.” Now Moses said, “All right, we’ll try this out.” He told them to assemble with their censers with fire in them. Then the fire of the Lord came out and consumed 250 men.

The lesson for me is this, you are responsible for what is in your censer. You’re responsible for the spirit in which you approach God. I’m not saying that you’ll be consumed with fire, but God’s judgments are often exemplary. In other words, God did not judge every city where there was homosexuality, as He judged Sodom and Gomorrah. But His judgment on Sodom and Gomorrah was exemplary. It showed forever God’s estimate of homosexuality.

Again, when Ananias and Sapphira tried to cheat the Lord with their offering, they both died because they claimed to be giving God more than they actually were. Not everybody who does that dies. I think if that happened there would be fewer people in the church. But God’s estimate of it never changes.

Here we have this demonstration of the danger approaching God with what is called, “profane fire”— any spirit that is not the Holy Spirit. This has become so very real to me.

Now, let’s turn to Hebrews and see the New Testament application. You know one of our problems is that we often read the Epistles as if they were written to unbelievers. They were not. They were written to Christians.

So Hebrews 12:28–29,
Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us have grace, by which we may serve God acceptable with reverence and godly fear. For our God is a consuming fire.

In that passage the NIV uses the word “awe.” I ask myself and I ask you, how much awe do you find in the church today? How many meetings do you go to where there is a sense of the awesome presence of God?

When we were in Britain last summer I encountered a minister friend who made this comment. “I meet people who talk about God as if He was someone they had met in the pub.” We’ve got this “buddy-buddy” relationship with Jesus. He does invite us for fellowship, for communion, but we must never, never lose our sense of awe. I think that is the root of the problems we’ve been talking about.

To go back for a moment to the contemporary spiritual movements I’ve been describing. I could easily believe that somewhere in the beginning there was a genuine, spontaneous move of the Holy Spirit. Part of what comes out is the Holy Spirit, but has become mixed. Some things are from God, but others are not.

Why? where is the problem? My answer is soulishness. An undiscerned, downward slide from a focus on God to a focus on self. From objective scriptural truth to subjective personal experience. All to often a sense of awe and reverence for the holiness of God has been replaced by unscriptural frivolity and flippancy. In fact, I would say that flippancy has become an epidemic disease in the contemporary Charismatic movement.

If we have been guilty of it, we need to repent. God has convicted me more than once of being flippant. I have confessed it as a sin and repented. We have to set a watch on our
tongues.

Charles Finney once commented, “God never uses a jester to search consciences.” One characteristic ministry of the Holy Spirit is to convict of sin and or righteousness and of judgment. John 16:8. Where people remain unconvicted of sin we must question whether the Holy Spirit is at work.

Has God provided any protection against this kind of error? Yes.

But first we must understand that error primarily attacks the area of the soul, though the spirit may also be affected later. It is the soul, therefore, that must be protected. The protection which God has provided for the soul has one unique and all-sufficient basis; the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross.

In Matthew 16:24–25,
Then Jesus said to His disciples, “if anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself and take up his cross, and follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life [literally soul] will lose it, but whoever loses his life [literally his soul] for My sake will find it.

Here is the divine paradox; to save, protect our soul, we must lose it. Before we can follow Jesus there are two preliminary steps. First, we must deny ourself. We must say a resolute and final “No” to our demanding, self-seeking ego. Second, we must take up our cross. We must accept the sentence of death which the cross imposes on us. Taking up our cross is a voluntary decision that each of us must make.

God does not forcefully impose the cross upon us. If we do not apply the cross personally in our own life, we leave a door open to demonic influence. There is always the danger that our uncrucified ego will respond to the seductive flatteries of deceiving demons. Pride is the main area in our character which Satan targets, and flattery is the main lever he uses to gain entrance. We must each apply the cross personally to ourselves.

In Galatians 2:20 Paul says,
“I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live . . .”

We each need to ask, “Is that true of me? Have I really been crucified with Christ or am I still motivated by my soulish ego?”

Many Christians today would feel that this solution is too radical. They would question whether this is the only way to be secure from deception. They tend to regard Paul as some kind of “Super Saint” whom they can never hope to imitate. Paul, however, does not see himself this way. His ministry as an apostle was unique, but his personal relationship with Christ was a pattern for all to follow. In 1 Timothy 1:16 he says,

However, for this reason I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might show all longsuffering, as a pattern to those who are going to believe on Him for everlasting life.
So Paul was a pattern for all who would follow.
Again in 1 Corinthians 11:1 he says,
Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ.

The only alternative to the cross is to put self in the place of Christ, but this is idolatry. It opens the way for evil consequences that invariably follow idolatry. The cross is the heart and center of the Christian faith. Without the cross proclaimed and applied, Christianity is left without a foundation, and its claims are no longer valid. It has become, in fact, a false religion. As such, like all false religions, it’s inevitably exposed to demonic infiltration and deception.

So now, having said that much, let me give you five examples of movements within the Charismatic movement that have all gone the same way. In some way or other I have had some kind of association with each of them. Going back to the period just after World War II in Canada, there was an outpouring of the Holy Spirit in Saskatchewan which came to be called “The Latter Rain.” It made a very powerful impact and a lot of people went from different areas of North American to Saskatchewan. I would say the essence of this movement was a full restoration of all the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

Later I knew a man who was present at the Full Gospel Business Men in Chicago, a fine Christian. He described what happened to him when he went there. He said the meetings lasted nine hours, and they were so exciting that he didn’t even want to get up and go to the bathroom. But what happened? The leader became proud, self-assertive and fell into immorality and thereby discredited the gifts of the Spirit.

Later on from 1957 through 1962 I was a missionary with the Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada. Dear people but practically no exercise of spiritual gifts at all. So one day I said to them, “Why don’t we ever exercise spiritual gifts?” The answer was the “Latter Rain” had them. In other words, that made it impossible for us. We might go the same way. You see, one of Satan’s tactics is to discredit that which is good by its misuse.

Then there was the “Manifested Sons.” I’m sure some of you can remember these. They were a very powerful group of men who took the Scripture, “…that all creation is waiting for the manifestation of the Sons of God.” They had a really powerful ministry particularly in casting out demons. But in casting out demons they entered into long conversations with demons, and sought revelation from them.

I think it’s totally wrong ever seek revelation from demons. They ended up with an exaggerated theology which said some of them had already received their resurrection bodies. The next thing that happened was that two of them were killed in an airplane crash. So God said, “Where’s your resurrection body now?”, but they were fine men at the first.

Then there were the “Children of God.” How many of you have heard of the “Children of God?” Later they changed their name to “The Family.” A woman named Linda Meisner exercised a powerful ministry among them. I had two or three encounters with her. She was a very dedicated powerful woman, and she had a great burden for the young people of America. But when she was taken over by pride, she became manipulative and dominating.

Many of the young people in the “Children of God” came under her control. She cut them off from their relationship with their parents and their families, and it became a disaster. But I believe that when she started, she was right.

Then there was William Branham. I had a little association with William Branham at the closing period of his ministry.

I was on the same platform with him two or three times with the Full Gospel Business Men. William Branham had, in some ways, one of the most remarkable ministries that I know of. He was a very gentle, humble, loving man. His ministry of the word of knowledge was absolutely legendary. No one ever heard Branham give one false word of knowledge.

I was with him in a meeting in Phoenix, Arizona. He was on the platform and he picked our a woman in the audience and he said, “Now you’re not here for yourself. You’re here for your grandson.” And then he told her her name and her exact street address in New York City. They were about 2,000 miles away from New York City at the time. Unfortunately, after exercising his gift two or three times, he just collapsed and his men came and gathered him up and carried him away.

He explained that by the statement of Jesus, “The power has gone out of me.” But Jesus did not collapse. I do not believe that was the Holy Spirit. I believe it was demonic.

Later on I was close friends with Ern Baxter, who was, for quite a considerable period, the Bible teacher in Branham’s evangelistic meetings. Ern loved Branham dearly, but his heart was broken over what happened. One day he gathered a small group of us and said, “I want to tell you about Branham. I don’t want you to talk to anybody about it. I just want you to know.” Now since all the people concerned have passed from the stage of time, I feel free to share what Ern shared about Branham.

He said Branham had two spirits. One was the Spirit of God, one was not. At one point they were together and Branham pointed to a light bulb hanging from the ceiling and said, “The power I have can make that bulb move.” I believe Branham remained in Christ to the very end, but he was taken over by people who wanted to exploit him. Although he did not call himself Elijah, he permitted his followers to do so. He was killed through an automobile crash when his car was run into by a drunk driver. His followers embalmed his body to keep it there until Easter Sunday, being convinced that he would be resurrected, but he was not.

When he was in the Spirit under the anointing he was almost unchallengable. At one time a demonized man up to attack him in a meeting. Branham commanded the man to kneel down and stay there until he finished his message. The man stayed kneeling in the same posture for the whole period of Branham’s sermon. But I would have to say his end was, perhaps the best you could say, disappointing.

And then we have Discipleship or the Shepherding Movement.

Now I was personally closely involved, and I can tell you that it began with a supernatural intervention of God. I was there when it happened. Three other preachers beside my self; Bob Mumford, Charles Simpson, Don Basham and I were all speaking at a convention. In the middle of it we discovered that the man who was leading and organizing the convention was an actively, practicing homosexual. So we thought, “What are we to do about this?” We agreed to meet together in someone’s room in the motel, not my room. The four of us knelt down and prayed and when we stood up we all knew, without any process of reasoning, without praying for it, without even wanting it, that God had joined us together. Yet, in spite of that, I don’t think the thing went a year before it started to go off.

This is my personal impression. The problem was primarily personal ambition in different forms. One wanted to be the leader of a movement, another wanted to appear on the platform, and so on. And I was one of them. From my experience I would say there is no greater problem in the church today than personal ambition in the ministry. Another problem was that we were not renewed in our minds. We still thought in the “old church” categories.

Everybody who disliked us said, “Well, you’re really a denomination.” Our leader said, “Oh, no. We’re not a denomination. We never will be.” But the logic of spiritual principles is inexorable. He and his group have become a denomination.
Our root problem was that we were not renewed in our minds.

We still thought in terms of the way the church traditionally does things, and I do not believe the church does things right. I believe there has to be a revolution in our thinking before we can line up with God’s purposes.
So let me just list these five examples. The Latter Rain,

The Manifested Sons, The Children of God, William Branham, and The Discipleship or Shepherding Movement.

Finally, let me point out two elements that were common, I think, to all of these movements. No. 1 – PRIDE. Pride is the most dangerous of all sins, in my opinion. I heard a fellow preacher say once, “Pride is the only sin about which the devil will not make you feel guilty.” Proverbs 16:18, a very short little verse.

Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before a fall.

Now you’ll notice that people usually say, “Pride goes before a fall.” That is not what the Bible says. The Bible says, “Pride goes before destruction.” So turn around. Don’t continue in that way, because the end of it is destruction. I am talking to myself as much as to you.

The second feature which I believe was common to all five was what I have already spoken about; A MIXTURE OF SPIRITS.

There was truth and there was error. There was the Holy Spirit and there were other spirits. The way the other spirits got in was through a downward slide from the earthly to the soulish to the demonic. Remember, the soulish is essentially self-centered. In 2 Timothy 3:1–5 Paul describes what the condition of humanity will be like at the close of this age. I believe we are living in that time. He lists 18 sins or moral blemishes.

But know this [and that’s the only time that I can recall that Paul was so emphatic. He says, “Now be absolutely sure of this . . .], that in the last days perilous times will come . . .

The Greek word translated “perilous” is only used in one other place, in Matthew 8:28 where it describes two demonized men who came against Jesus. And notice the English word there—fierce. So there are going to be fierce times and they are here. You can pray as much as you like but you cannot change it because God says, “Know this. There will be fierce times.” You cannot change it, but you can ask God to prepare you for it. Then Paul give a list of these 18 moral blemishes:
. . . for men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without selfcontrol, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God.

Notice, it begins and ends with the things that people love. Love of self, love of money, and then love of pleasure. But I want to point out to you the root of it all is the love of self. That’s what lets evil in. Soulishness, being focused on me, what is God going to do for me, what do I get out of this? And then it goes on in verse 5,
. . . having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away!

So these people with these 18 horrible moral conditions have a form of godliness. They are not unbelievers. They are not atheists. I do not believe, myself, that Paul would ever use the word “godliness” outside the Christian context. So these are professing Christians, and what is the problem? Self-love. Selflove is what opens the way to every one of these other problems. Self-centeredness, that leads in turn to mixture.

Just one more thing and we close. The way that mixture works is this. It causes confusion and then division, because some of what is provided is good and some is bad. Some is truth and some is error. This means there are two ways people can respond. Some will focus on the error and reject the truth. Others will focus on the truth and accept the error.

Therefore, there comes confusion and out of the confusion, division.

People become aggressively committed to one or other of the alternatives. What causes it? Mixture. We cannot afford to tolerate mixture. What is the answer to mixture? Truth. The pure, undiluted truth of God’s word.

It happened once in the USA that I was the only witness to an accident in the street outside our home. As a result I was required to testify in court. Before I gave my testimony, I was required to affirm that I would speak the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. That was the standard set by a secular court. How much more should we as Christians take our stand for the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.
